  • Patent number: 6882658
Abstract: The present invention relates to being able to adjust a time period of a time slot in a communication channel, depending on the information being sent in the time slot. In one embodiment of the present invention, a process and system for automatically adjusting a time period of a time slot in a communication channel is presented. The communication channel is monitored. A determination is made to see whether data are being transmitted in a time slot in the communication channel. The time slot is adjusted to a first time period if data are being transmitted in the time slot. The time slot is adjusted to a second time period if data are not being transmitted in the time slot.

  • Patent number: 6882623
Abstract: A method and system for data traffic management in telecommunications networks is presented. End user data streams are aggregated to achieve more efficient use of a communication channel. Bandwidth is dynamically allocated to the data streams of the various users, effectively reducing their communications costs. The system includes a class of service selector and a plurality of stream selectors. Each stream selector is associated with a single budget category. Data is placed into queues according to a priority assigned by the end user. Data packets are transmitted from their queues through the class of service selector and through one of the stream selectors in response to the traffic provided by the end users and the budget category subscriptions of the end users.

  • Patent number: 6870829
Abstract: The invention relates to message signalling in a synchronous transmission apparatus using redundant pointer bits as a signalling channel within the apparatus. The preferred embodiment uses one or more of the new data flag (NDF) pointer bits as a signalling channel. The invention has particular, but not exclusive, application in the field of performance monitoring in a path protected telecommunications network, where the pointer bit signalling channel is used to communicate between data ports which transmission path is selected.

  • Patent number: 6868070
Abstract: Web/portal-based systems and methods for selling, configuring, installing, reconfiguring and servicing such integrated voice/data communications systems are disclosed. An Internet/web or personal digital assistant (“PDA”) or personal computer (“PC”) based portal is provided to enable a relatively high level of data to be more easily collected. The portal preferably is graphical and guides either the customer or one or more sales persons (or site installer/technician, etc.) in the collection of user requirements data indicative of the particular customer's hardware, telephony and network service requirements. The user requirements data is a less technical, more intuitive level of user requirements data, as compared with configuration data. An initial test of the data preferably is performed, such as for purposes of data consistency, ensuring that all required data has been entered and the like.

  • Patent number: 6862278
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for parallel compression and decompression of a bitstream. For compression, the bitstream is separated into a plurality of components, and the components are encoded using a compression algorithm. Packets are then constructed from the encoded components. At least one packet is associated with each encoded component and comprises header information and encoded data. The packets are combined into a packetized encoded bitstream. For decompression, the packets are separated from the packetized encoded bitstream using the header information. The packets are then decoded in parallel using a decompression algorithm to recover the encoded data. The plurality of components are reconstructed from the recovered encoded data and combined to recover the bitstream.

  • Patent number: 6856625
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the information error rate of a communication network. The apparatus comprises a selector device coupled to a Framer and to an Interleaver. The selector device is configured to receive system information and the Framer is configured to receive user information. The apparatus is coupled to equipment which operate the communication network based on system parameters. The apparatus and method of the present invention improve the coding and effectively increase the interleaving depth applied to user information thus reducing the information error rate of the communication network without having to alter or modify any of the system parameters.

  • Patent number: 6856612
Abstract: A method and system for communicating information includes evaluation regarding routing of calls performed at a call control point in an ITSP and/or wireless network. A PIC identity associated with another party's preferences is acquired and sent to the call control point. The PIC identity identifies the type of the carrier network (e.g., circuit switched or VoIP) and is used to make further routing decisions. If a circuit-switched carrier is identified, the IP homing leg is terminated at the voice gateway in the recipient's HPLMN and information is sent over to the GMSC where normal, circuit-switched routing procedures. If a VoIP carrier is identified then the called user's roaming number is retrieved from the HLR, and the call is further routed directly over the IP domain towards a voice gateway at the visited network minimizing the number of transcodings. Additional transcoding steps can be avoided if a single encoding is agreed upon according to “tandem free operation” (TFO).

  • Patent number: 6826176
Abstract: A media gateway (MGW), and methods related thereto, for controlling the routing of data packets through a “connectionless” packet-switched network, without bearer-channel control signaling. In an exemplary embodiment, an Integrated Services Digital Network User Part (ISUP) Initial Address Message (IAM) is transmitted from a controller 110-A associated with a MGW 120-A to a controller 110-B associated with a MGW 120-B; the IAM includes a source address for data packets at the MGW 120-A. The controller 110-B sends a resource allocation message to the MGW 120-B, which defines and stores an association between the source address for the data packets and an address associated with the MGW 120-B in a mapping table 230. Subsequently, when the MGW 120-B receives a broadcast message including an unknown destination indicator, it queries the mapping table 230 using the source address of the broadcast message.

  • Patent number: 6804201
Abstract: A method of packet switching the packets in a data packet communication environment having a plurality of digital packet transmission stations interconnectable in paths. The steps include causing a first digital packet transmission of a smart data packet at a first end to send one or more smart data packets having a learning algorithm therein for learning a path to a second digital packet transmission station at a second end and then causing an acknowledgement packet to be sent from the second end having the learning path of the smart data packet from the first end to the second end in a reverse path direction to the first end. Then waiting at the first digital packet transmission station for the acknowledgement packet before sending a dumb data packet on the learned path received at the first end from the acknowledgement packet whereby a cognitive packet network is formed by packet switching.

  • Patent number: 6778512
Abstract: According to the present invention, different frequency reuse patterns are used when scheduling critical and non-critical data transmissions. More specifically, the present invention uses a first reuse pattern for scheduling the transmission of critical data and a second reuse pattern for scheduling the transmission of non-critical data. The invention can be applied to any inbound or outbound time slotted protocol that have message fragments spanning over one or more time slots. The reuse pattern can be varied slot by slot, to use a less aggressive reuse for communicating critical data and a more aggressive reuse for communicating non-critical data. As a result, data can be communicated more reliably and throughput can be increased by protecting critical data transmissions via a less aggressive reuse.

  • Patent number: 6775231
Abstract: In one embodiment, the technique dynamically adjusts resource allocations for each traffic class based on actual traffic load measured for each service class. In this way, the per-hop-behavior required by a differentiated service model may be achieved. Core nodes of a network operating according to a differentiated service model dynamically adjust resource allocations for multiple traffic classes without requiring explicit signaling from other network nodes. Policies for sharing resources among multiple service classes can be enforced.

  • Patent number: 6765868
Abstract: A packet switching network, e.g., the Internet, employs bandwidth managers to provide guaranteed bandwidth reservations to paired forwarding and receiving agents interfacing with sending and receiving stations in the transfer of large data files therebetween. The forwarding agents obtain guaranteed reservations from the bandwidth manager for segments of the large data file which are transmitted to the receiving station in accordance with the respective reservations. The receiving agent reassembles the segments into the large data file for delivery to the receiving station. By segmenting the large data files, using guaranteed bandwidth reservations on different links or multiple networks, the transmission of large data files through packet switching networks is accomplished without adversely impacting the service requirements of other network users.
