  • Patent number: 4721589
Abstract: An extruder control system and method controls melt temperature to maintain viscosity of the melt at the die. A constant volumetric flow to the die is delivered by a gear pump, the die is a fixed orifice, and pressure between the gear pump and the die is indicative of viscosity. Changes in pressure are sensed and compensating changes in temperature are effected to return the pressure and, hence, the viscosity to its previous value.

  • Patent number: 4718770
Abstract: A screw extruder of the elastomeric material type includes a feed section with a power driven feed roll in a feed box running adjacent and counter the rotation of the screw. The roll is journaled for rotation on a frame which may easily be moved to and from an operative and an open position to facilitate service or cleaning. A quick release mechanism secures and releases the feed roll in the operative position. The roll frame is mounted for easy movement on horizontally extending guide rods which may extend and be journaled for sliding movement over or under the feed section. The feed box includes an insert which is adjustable and incorporates roll end lip seals and also a separately adjustable roll face scraper or seal thereby to reduce clearances as wear occurs without disturbing the proper relationship of such seals.

  • Patent number: 4718842
Abstract: An automatic press includes a first plate (2, 5), which is movable in translation along an axis, and a hydraulic jack (7), of which a piston (6) is secured to the first plate. The hydraulic jack commands the translation movement of the first plate to bring it into a first predetermined position (A) in relation to a reference postion (R1). The jack (7) is supported by a frame (3, 4, 8, 9). The press includes also a second plate (10, 12, 13), which supports an object (30) to be pressed; this second plate is situated facing the first plate. The jack (7) includes a mechanism (41) for bringing into control the position of the plate with the set predetermined position (A), and an opto-electronic member (16) for referencing the momentary positions of the first plate in the course of its movement. The automatic press has application to the manufacture of objects by pressing and also to welding done by bringing the plates together.

  • Patent number: 4712994
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cold runner transfer molding. Insulating and/or cooling means are provided so that the mold runnerblock is kept sufficiently cool to prevent curing of the plastic molding compound therein. By the addition of a plunger near the gate of the mold, a quasi-continuous molding operation may be effected. Local preheating of the molding material at the gate locale may be used to liquefy a feedstock which has travelled through the cold-runners in powdered form.

  • Patent number: 4711624
Abstract: For making open-ended thermoplastic tubular articles, which are dimensionally stable up to elevated temperatures, an open-ended polymer tube is placed between a fixed, heated external mould and a cooled mandrel, which is vertically displaceable relative to the mould, both the ends of the polymer tube being clamped to restrain the tube axially. The polymer tube is radially expanded into contact with the hot mould and maintained in contact for a time sufficient to ensure dimensional stability, and then allowed to shrink back into contact with the cooled mandrel, which is maintained at a temperature below the glass transistion temperature of the polymer. The resulting article is then stripped from the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4710112
Abstract: An auger assembly is provided which includes a core, the surface of which increases in diameter from the upstream end towards the downstream end. The auger flighting upon the core, however, maintains a constant diameter from the upstream end towards the downstream end so that the depth of flighting gradually decreases to zero at the downstream end. This means that the maximum thrust against the concrete being augered occurs at a negative angle of approximately 105.degree., said thrust being at right angles to the surface of the core. This produces a negative flow of the concrete thus contradicting the free concrete flow required in order to provide the necessary bond between the concrete and the cables. The present invention reduces this surface angle to an angle of approximately 90.degree., or having the surface substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4708619
Abstract: Apparatus for spinning monofilaments made of thermoplastic synthetic resin, with a spinning head for monofilaments, at least one spinning panel with a plurality of nozzle orifices, one or more spinning pumps with a motor equipped with a regulator for controlling the thickness of the monofilaments. The regulator can be fed to the diameter measurements of the individually measured monofilaments. Anywhere from 6 to 60 nozzle orifices, preferably about 20 nozzle orifices, are combined into a nozzle orifice group. Each nozzle orifice group has its own spinning pump with its own regulator. The monofilaments of the nozzle orifices of a nozzle orifice group can be conducted past a measuring device for the measurement of the diameters of the monofilaments. This measuring device will calculate an average of the diameter measurements of the monofilaments, which can be fed as an actual value into the regulator which services the spinning pump of the corresponding nozzle orifice group.

  • Patent number: 4705472
Abstract: The compression molding of sections, bars, molded articles, or similar, consisting of vegetable particles mixed with binding media was uneconomical, because the relatively short molding time was overlapped by the disproportionate curing time. In order to considerably improve upon this deficiency, the inventor proposes to feed the molded section, or similar, along its longitudinal axis into a curing unit, while the sections between the molding jaws should remain in clamped position. The molding jaws, together with the cured section, are then returned through the press and the section is ejected after the unlocking of the molding jaws. Within the framework of the cyclic work, the individual operating processes can be adjusted to one another.

  • Patent number: 4705656
Abstract: A method for producing spherical metal particle uses a molten metal reservoir for containing a molten metal, a rotary drum having a number of teeth onto which the molten metal is to be adhered one after another and a driving means for rotating the rotary drum so that the molten metal adhered to each of the teeth can be scattered from the teeth before even a part of each molten metal adhered to the teeth solidifies. At least one tooth of the rotary drum is dipped into the molten metal contained in the molten metal reservoir. The molten metal adhered to the teeth is scattered from the teeth before any portion of it has solidified by means of centrifugal force acting on the rotary drum. The molten metal assumes a spherical or similar shape during its trajectory due to surface tension. It cools by atmospheric cooling to solidify as discrete metal particles of substantially uniform diameter.

  • Patent number: 4704082
Abstract: The invention concerns an isostatic press mold for producing moldings from powdery ceramic material. The mold comprises two mold parts which are movable relative to one another between a mold-closed position and a mold-open position and which, in the mold-closed position, define between them a mold cavity. On at least one of the mold parts, there is a press diaphragm which on one side defines part of the limiting surface of the mold cavity and on the other side is subjected to a pressure fluid. On its said other side, that is to say on its side facing away from the mold cavity, the press diaphragm is designed with a plurality of recess spaces so that the press mold can be deformed, while at the same time reducing the internal stresses occurring in it.
