  • Patent number: 6865167
Abstract: A method and system for soft handoff of a mobile terminal in a wireless CDMA IP network utilizes IP multicasting to a plurality of multicast participants that reside at the mobile terminal. A soft handoff multicast protocol is used to assign a unique IP multicasting address to the mobile terminal and establish a plurality of multicast participants that reside at the mobile terminal, thereby creating corresponding multicast network connections between the IP network and the mobile terminal. The IP network simultaneously transmits information to the mobile terminal via the multicast network connections by broadcasting the information as a multicast message to the mobile terminal's multicast group. The multicast extends between a mobile terminal and a plurality of a base station associated with the network to simultaneously communicate information over separate communication channels.

  • Patent number: 6862299
Abstract: In a data transmission system, and a method for transmitting data in the gigabit/second range, data are transferred from a source located on a rotary part to a stationary part via a slip ring system. A first gigabit data link proceeds from the source at the rotary part to a rotary module of the slip ring system, from which the data are transferred to a stationary module of the slip ring system. From the stationary module of the slip ring system, the data are transferred via a second data link to a receiver. Each of the rotary module and the stationary module of the slip ring system has a clock regenerator. The clock regenerators are operated to synchronize the gigabit/second data, proceeding from the first data link and proceeding to the second data link, to a stable reference clock, so as to prevent jitter from proceeding from the source to the receiver.

  • Patent number: 6856590
Abstract: The time required for switch the channel can be remarkably curtailed. When broadcasting signals through a plurality of information channels with an OFDM system, the plurality of information channels are multiplexed in the sense of frequency and collectively subjected to IFFT modulation for connected transmission instead of subjecting the plurality of information channels independently to OFDM modulation for transmission. With this arrangement, the efficiency of exploitation of frequencies is improved. According to the invention, the OFDM frames are synchronized for each information channel for the purpose of connected transmission. Then, the OFDM receiver can switch the information channel for signal reception, maintaining the frame synchronizing signals.

  • Patent number: 6822947
Abstract: A packet core network (PCN) includes a plurality of interconnected routers. An emulator is provided along with at least one of the routers and operates to control transmission of Internet Protocol (IP) datagrams there through in order to simulate the effects of having one of the non-radio inter-router connections fictionally comprise a wireless cellular radio link. The emulator responds to user input specifying wireless cellular radio link conditions to determine a time delay to be applied by the router against the transmission of each datagram. This time delay is set roughly equivalent to the delay introduced, under the user specified wireless cellular radio link conditions, by emulated radio link operation to erase uncorrectable frames to obtain retransmission. The emulator further sets a data rate for router handling of datagrams based on the user input to simulate congestion on the radio link due to the presence of other, competing users.

  • Patent number: 6807193
Abstract: A modem, communications system and method are provided with a transmitter and a receiver connected to a modem termination system (CMTS) by a medium. The modem has a memory forming a transmit queue including voice and video. The modem has a controller for sending data units from the receive queue to CMTS. The modem requests unsolicited grant service (UGS) from CMTS when the frame controller detects periodic stream to transmit. Upon detecting a data accumulation in the receive queue, the controller asserts a queue indicator. The Modem receives an occasional extra grant per interval and uses these grants until the queue indicator is not asserted. According to another feature, during transmission, the modem requests subsequent grants in a subsequent interval using an extended header having multiple bits for requesting the multiple grants. The CMTS allocates at least an extra grant to form a grant burst in response to the request.

  • Patent number: 6804262
Abstract: In a data-over-cable system, a cable head-end transmits a signal that includes a plurality of analog television signal components an at least one quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) digital signal component, the signal components being defined by frequency channels. A cable modem has a tunable frequency selection system, operable at a first bandwidth, corresponding to the bandwidth of the frequency channels, and at a second, substantially narrower bandwidth, that provides a filtered signal and a power measurement system that measures the power level of the filtered signal. The frequency selection system scans through the channels, operating at its second bandwidth, and, in each channel, tunes to a first frequency and a second frequency. The power levels of the filtered signals from the first and second frequencies are measured and compared to distinguish the QAM digital signal components from the other signal components.

  • Patent number: 6804263
Abstract: A data network has a bus to which are connected a given node, a parent node and a child node; and arbitration over acquisition of the bus is performed before data is communicated between nodes. Transition to an initial state in a self identification phase, in which the given node is enabled to respond to an arbitration signal received from the parent node, is controlled by receiving at the given node a SELF_ID packet representative of the child node, as well as the arbitration signal (SELF_ID_GRANT) from the parent node, which would enable the given node to transmit to the parent node a SELF_ID packet representative of the given node. The initial state is assumed at the given node, from which the SELF_ID packet is permitted to be transmitted from the given node to the parent node, if reception of the arbitration signal from the parent node is completed at the given node.

  • Patent number: 6801536
Abstract: Two data streams derived from a transmitted data stream are remultiplexed with a coarser granularity for storage in data blocks which assure that corresponding portions of each of the two data streams are made available in the same data block. The data streams are buffered in queues from which sub-blocks are transferred as buffer sections having sizes corresponding to relative bit rates therein in the order the sub-blocks are filled, preferably using bytes to interrupt processing. Thus, the sub-blocks will be grouped into data blocks in accordance with the correspondence of the data streams such as the time correspondence of audio and video data. As applied to digital video data transmissions, a system time clock (STC) value is stored in a sub-block header and/or a data block header and, using a look-up table or other arrangement for estimating a storage location, a data block can be retrieved from storage in accordance with a target STC value.

  • Patent number: 6795393
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for cross connect matrices includes originating, center and terminating stages in both a main portion and a back-up portion that allows center stages to be switched without causing a framing error. The signal from the main portion is transmitted through both the back-up and main portions of the cross connect matrices such that a terminating line card receives a frame aligned signal from the main and back portions. The terminating line card then switches its output to be the signal produced by the back-up portion with no framing error. In the main portion, the center stage may be switched. After the center stage is switched, the terminating line card can switch again to output the signal from the main portion.

  • Patent number: 6788646
Abstract: The invention concerns an efficient strategy for sharing link bandwidth in a mixed rigid-elastic traffic environment, as well as a strategy for sharing bandwidth among elastic traffic flows. The idea according to the invention is to sharing the link bandwidth among rigid and elastic traffic by dividing the link bandwidth into a first common part CCOM for elastic as well as rigid traffic and a second part CELA dedicated for elastic traffic. Subsequently, one or more admission control parameters for the elastic traffic are determined in order to restrict the number of elastic traffic flows simultaneously present on the link. In particular, by formulating a call-level model for elastic traffic and determining a maximum number NELA of admissible elastic traffic flows based on call-level constraints for the elastic traffic related to throughput and/or blocking, the so-called throughput-to-blocking trade-off for elastic traffic can be fully considered.
