  • Patent number: 4584912
Abstract: A small, simple, accurate, low-cost wire cutting and stripping apparatus includes a wire feed mechanism which periodically feeds a measured length of an insulated wire strand to a wire cutter/stripper mechanism which clamps the wire strand, severs it and scores the insulation, axially separates the wire segment cut from the wire strand and strips the scored insulation during such axial separation. The wire feed mechanism is driven intermittently by a continuously rotating electric motor through an electrically-operated wire feed clutch/brake, the clutch mechanism of which engages in response to an electric signal from a timer switch (start wire feed) and which disengages in response to an electric signal from an electric wire measuring encoder (measure and stop wire feed). The wire cutter/stripper mechanism includes a stationary pair of separable clamps, a movable pair of separable bladed cutter/stripper heads and a movable pair of separable clamps.

  • Patent number: 4584913
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved "lever lock" type wrench which has ratchet characteristics and a novel construction which makes it convenient to use. The construction includes an angled and compact head portion, a quick-release lever, and fully enclosed internal working elements which protects them from grease and dirt. Furthermore, a particular geometry is disclosed which permits the minimum amount of handle rotation for the wrench jaws to achieve the next successive grip in the ratcheting mode.

  • Patent number: 4583430
Abstract: There is disclosed a retaining ring for sockets which are attached to the shaft of a power driver, such as the pneumatic air tools, which is a molded elastomer ring with a diametric, integrally molded pin with a metal sleeve surrounding a portion of the pin. The sockets are provided with a receptacle which receives the shaft end of the driver and flats are provided on the shaft and receptacle to transmit torque. A transverse bore is provided in the shaft end and this receives the pin of the retaining ring. The specific improvement of this invention is a metal sleeve about the portion of the pin which extends across a boundry interface between the shaft end of the driver and the inside wall of the socket member to provide reinforcement to the pin, resisting shearing and abrasive wear.

  • Patent number: 4581958
Abstract: An extensible handle assembly for a ratchet wrench or similar tool includes a tubular handle member with a central hole down its length and a tool-engaging shank extending through the central hole of the handle member. The shank is slidable in the handle member between extended and retracted positions, and includes a detent to engage the shank at each of those positions. A plug that extends through the central hole from the rearward end of the handle member permits disassembly of the shank from the handle member, restricts movement of the shank outwardly from the forward end of the handle member and restricts axial rotation of the shank.

  • Patent number: 4581805
Abstract: A wire-marking clip applicator includes a holder which carries a number of wands, each carrying a unique set of marked C-shaped clips that can be individually dispensed onto a wire from a flared shoe at the end of each wand. Such clip-dispensing wands have been used for the same purpose in the prior art, but the holder makes it possible for the first time to mark a wire with differently numbered clips without picking up, using, and laying down a wand. The holder preferably is formed with a central longitudinal passage into which a wire to be marked can be inserted if one end of the wire is disconnected, thus positioning every flared shoe close to the wire for quickly and easily transfering clips onto the wire.

  • Patent number: 4581960
Abstract: The present invention relates to water-pump pliers having two plier handles which cross each other and are connected to each other by a pivot pin 7 whereby the handles form plier jaws above the region of crossing of the handles and grip sections below the region of crossing of the handles, and in which the first plier handle is adjustable in steps relative to the second plier handle to change the size of the plier jaws. The pivot pin is fitted and guided in a bore defined in the first plier handle and enters into form-locked engagement with the profiled flanks of a slot in the second plier handle, where the slot lies in the crossing region of the handles, and, in order to obtain a structural form which is simple to manufacture, favorable in operation and stable in use, the pivot pin is rendered incapable of turning with respect to the second plier handle.

  • Patent number: 4579024
Abstract: A control system for power tongs comprises two tongs torque limiters, one of which limits tongs torque to a very low (hand-tight) level; the other limits torque at full makeup to, for example, 2000 ft. lb. The hand-tight torque limiter is manually or automatically disabled after the hand-tight level is reached. The system enables the operator to verify that the threads are properly engaged before applying full torque to the connection. The tongs have a very high reduction ratio, so that torque rises very slowly and can be more accurately controlled.

  • Patent number: 4578851
Abstract: The tool comprises a frame with a roller rotatably mounted thereon. A molding contacting element is also positioned on the frame in such a way that when the base surface of a hard resilient molding engages said molding contacting element and the opposite surface of the molding engages the periphery of the roller, the molding is formed into a curve which decreases the width of the base portion of the molding. This decreases in width is just sufficient to permit the base of the curved portion of the molding to be inserted in a straight metal channel. When the molding is uncurved so it can lie straight in the metal channel, the width of the base of the molding increases enough to grip the sides of the channel to lock the molding in the channel.

  • Patent number: 4574664
Abstract: A powered back-up assembly is provided for securing a pipe against rotation. A plurality of heads are supported by a cage plate assembly, and are brought into gripping engagement with the pipe by rotating the cage plate assembly relative to a cam ring fixed to the body of the tong body. The cage plate assembly is rotated by a pair of hydraulic cylinders each connected at one end to a bar pivotably connected to the tong body. A third hydraulic cylinder interconnected between adjacent upper and lower tong bodies may be employed to achieve a reliable scissors tong, whereby the body of the upper tong is rotatable relative to the body of the lower tong.

  • Patent number: 4573377
Abstract: A relatively lightweight wrench is disclosed herein which is characterized by a gear mounted at its periphery for rotation within a housing, said gear having a major and a minor gear sections removably secured to each other, a collet disposed within the gear for rotation therewith, said collet having an opening of a geometric shape to accommodate a work piece and an open side for admitting a work piece thereinto and a block cooperating with the minor gear section for closing-off the open side of the collet. The wrench is adapted to be opened by removing or opening the minor gear section and removing the collet block to expose a passage leading into the collet opening. In assembling the wrench, a work piece corresponding in shape to the collet opening is passed through the passage into the collet opening, the collet block is positioned in place to close-off the collet opening, and the minor gear section is again secured to the major gear section.

  • Patent number: 4572033
Abstract: A bottle decapper for removing twist-type bottle caps from bottles is disclosed. A conveyor means moves the bottles relative to a frame while holding the bottles rotationally stationary relative to the frame. A cap engaging means positioned above the conveyor means and fixed to the frame includes a primary segment and a back-up segment. The primary segment has a hard file surface positioned in a plane to engage a sidewall of a passing bottle cap in rolling contact to unscrew the bottle cap from the bottle. The back-up segment has a softer surface than the primary segment surface and is positioned downstream from the primary segment surface with the back-up segment surface in approximately the plane of the primary segment surface. The primary segment surface loosens the bottle caps from passing bottles and the back-up segment surface completes unscrewing any caps which were not completely unscrewed by the primary segment surface.
