  • Patent number: 5628766
Abstract: A surgical device is provided for anchoring suture into bone. The device includes a threaded portion having rounded exterior thread edges. An aperture for carrying suture passes through the threaded portion at a location intermediate the ends of the threaded position, the aperture extending in a direction substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis of the device. When the device is inserted within a cavity in the bone having a threaded sidewall, the suture is compressed between the threads of the device and the sidewall.

  • Patent number: 5626613
Abstract: A corkscrew suture anchor has a spiral-shaped body having a hollow central core, a distal end, and a proximal end. The distal end of the spiral body terminates in a sharp point, and the proximal end of the spiral-shaped body has an eye for receiving suture. The suture anchor expands resiliently during installation, and contracts to securely grip the bone once the installation force is relaxed. A driver for the suture anchor is provided, the driver including a shaft having a central axis, a length, a distal end, and a proximal end. The shaft is provided at its distal end with a stud aligned with the central axis of the shaft, for insertion into the hollow, central axis of the spiral-shaped body of the suture anchor, and a notch disposed adjacent to the stud for driveably engaging the proximal end of the spiral-shaped body.

  • Patent number: 5618310
Abstract: A device applies continuous tension to skin adjacent an ulcerative area, to expand and approximate this skin until it covers the ulcerative area. The new device includes a frame which defines a path in which sliders move under the force of a constant tension spring. Each slider includes a hook-like element that engages and pulls the skin until the skin on opposite sides of the ulcerative area comes together. This element is curved, thus defining a plane which is oriented perpendicular to the path of the slider.

  • Patent number: 5613975
Abstract: A surgical suturing apparatus for closing an incision penetrating a plurality of layers of tissue includes a tubular body in which a "J"-shaped suture needle resides. In this position the tubular body may be inserted into the incision without damaging tissue. Once the tubular body has been inserted into the incision, the pointed end and suture gate of the suture needle are deployable out of a slot through the side of the tubular body to permit deep suturing of tissue layers without also suturing surface tissue layers. Several embodiments are presented for deploying the needle, including one in which the straight section of the suture needle having the pointed tip is biased to flare away from the other straight section of the suture needle, and the deploying is accomplished by moving the pointed tip section adjacent the tubular body slot and permitting the bias to cause that section to flare out of the slot.

  • Patent number: 5607432
Abstract: A threaded bone anchor retriever and method for retrieving threaded bone anchors and the like from an implantation site. The anchor retriever is particularly suitable for retrieving threaded suture anchors during endoscopic surgical procedures. The retriever comprises an elongated shaft having an anchor engaging means at its distal tip for engaging the drive portion of the threaded anchor and for turning it in a direction to remove it from the implantation site. A concentric anchor engaging sleeve is adapted to move longitudinally relative to the elongated shaft in order to engage the threaded body of the anchor as it is removed from the implantation site. The invention includes a method for using the anchor retriever, particularly during endoscopic procedures, to remove anchors which may or may not have tissue growth overlying the implantation site.

  • Patent number: 5607435
Abstract: The present invention is an instrument (10) which includes a tubular section (12) having a wall (13) made of a material exhibiting superelastic characteristics and a delivery tube (14) having a bore (15) through which the tubular section (12) passes. The instrument (10) may be adapted for use in medical/dental and non-medical procedures. The superelastic character of the wall material is used in combination with the delivery tube (14) to alternately restrict the shape of the wall (13) and allow it to change to its unconstrained shape. Thus, the wall (13) can be sufficiently deformed to permit the tubular section (12) to pass in and out of and through the delivery tube (14) while at the same time enabling the tubular section (12) to have a shape when extended outside of the delivery tube (14) that is sufficiently bent or curved to be suitable for performing a desired function, for example a medical or dental procedure inside a patient's body.

  • Patent number: 5601578
Abstract: An endoscopic suturing device comprising an elongate hollow tube, one end of which carries a thread engaging and loop forming member and a thread or needle jaw member. An actuating member at the other end of the tube engages an elongate actuating rod extending through the tube and is coupled to the thread or needle jaw member, whereby axial movement of the actuating member against the biasing action of a spring causes the actuating rod to actuate the thread or needle clamping member. • Patent number: 5601573
Abstract: A clip, clip applier and method for ligating a tissue structure is provided. The applier has a two stage actuation. In the first stage, a tissue structure is positioned into the jaws of the clip applier The jaws close and lock to a preset force to compress and temporarily occlude the tissue structure. If satisfactorily positioned, the second stage is initiated in which a clip is advanced through the shaft of the clip applier in a closed position. At the distal end of the clip applier, the clip is opened slightly to capture the pre-compressed tissue structure, and is placed over the structure. The clip is then dissociated from the business end of the instrument. Preferably the clip comprises two leg members disposed in close proximity to one another joined from opposing directions by a connecting element. The connecting element restricts separation of the leg members with opposing spring members so as to provide substantially uniform parallel deflection of the leg members from each other.
