  • Patent number: 4195601
Abstract: A reciprocating piston-type internal combustion engine is equipped with a variable length connecting rod which is operable in response to engine oil pump pressures to cause a low throttle fuel charge to be compressed in the engine cylinder to substantially the same pressure as an open throttle fuel charge. An adjustable pressure regulator valve is provided to insure a substantially constant oil pressure at the connecting rod at all times during operation of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4191156
Abstract: In a two-stroke, water-cooled internal combustion engine the improvement is disclosed which permits to have a removable cylinder liner type of engine in spite of the intricate constructional arrangement of such engines having transfer ports and exhaust ports. The improvement consists in that the transfer and exhaust ports are formed through the liners and flanged fittings are provided between the liner transfer ports and the transfer ducts so as to ensure complete tightness. Differential-firmness gaskets are provided where appropriate and the engine is then assembled by stay bolts as usual. The construction suggested by the invention not only solves the tightness problem satisfactorily, but minimizes the stresses on the liners, especially the bending stresses.

  • Patent number: 4190025
Abstract: This disclosure relates to improvements in hydraulic dashpot chain tensioners for the timing chains of motor vehicles. A kit for modifying existing chain tensioners is disclosed which can be readily connected to a chain tensioner to eliminate leakage of air into the dashpot. The kit comprises an open, cup-like oil reservoir adapted to be sealingly secured to the chain tensioner in fluid communication with the dashpot. Baffles are arranged adjacent the open end of the cup member to prevent loss of oil therefrom by reason of centrifugal forces acting on the oil.

  • Patent number: 4188925
Abstract: An engine valve operating mechanism for operating the poppet valves controlling the intake and exhaust ports of each cylinder independently of each other and independently of the crank shaft speed. The mechanism includes an extendable and retractable fluid actuator having first and second members telescopically engaged with each other, one of which members is rotatable with respect to the other. An expansible and contractable fluid chamber is defined between the members, and the flow of fluid into and out of the chamber is controlled in accordance with the angular position of the members with respect to each other. When fluid flows into the chamber, the chamber expands causing the actuator to extend. When fluid is exhausted from the chamber, the actuator contracts. The actuator is mounted on a support member and engages a poppet valve operator to cause a poppet valve engaged by the operator to move in opening and closing directions in response to extension and retraction of the actuator.

  • Patent number: 4187810
Abstract: A power driven valve stroke adjusting device, remotely controlled, is operable for adjusting the length of stroke of a spring returned poppet valve of a valve-in-head internal combustion engine in which the valve is driven by an associated valve operating rocker on the head, operated by a push rod which, in turn, is driven by a tappet which is lineally reciprocable axially and concurrently rotatable about its axis. The device is carried on the rocker and is operable to adjust the valve stroke for opening the valve by the rocker from starting position of the valve to a long-stroke open position or to a short-stroke open position, selectively. The adjustment is effected during engine operation and without any hindrance to tappet rotation and without any change in the timing relation between the tappet and its operating cam, all while maintaining a zero or fixed preselected clearance between the rod and the rocker and between the rod and the tappet in the starting position of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4184464
Abstract: A hydraulic lash adjuster includes a body having a closed end, a chamber and an open end. A hollow plunger is positioned within the body chamber and has a portion extending outwardly therefrom. A high pressure chamber is formed between the closed end of the body and the plunger and a spring is positioned within the high pressure chamber to urge the plunger outwardly from the body. There are aligned fluid passages in the body and plunger to permit oil to pass into the hollow plunger from the exterior of the body. There is an additional fluid passage in the plunger, positioned closer to the high pressure chamber than the body fluid passage, to direct oil passing from the high pressure chamber along the exterior of the plunger back into the plunger interior.

  • Patent number: RE30188
Abstract: A system for varying valve timing; i.e. the rotational angle of the crankshaft during which an intake or an exhaust valve of a cylinder of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is open which results in varying valve overlap, and for varying valve lift of such intake and exhaust valves. A desmodromic cam and cam follower convert rotation of a cam shaft to reciprocating rotation, or oscillation, of the cam follower. The reciprocating rotation of the cam follower is converted by the interaction of a secondary cylindrical cam, a cylindrical control ring, and a reciprocating member to linear motion of the reciprocating member which reciprocating member is operatively connected to a poppet valve. Timing and lift of the reciprocating member and valve are variable over predetermined limits as a function of engine rpm and load by rotation of the cylindrical control ring. Each valve train positively closes as well as opens its associated valve.
