  • Patent number: 4422495
Abstract: A mold handling system and method wherein cars are moved along a closed vertical loop. A first elevator positions an empty car adjacent a mold-supply conveyor, whereupon a mold is pushed onto the car, after which the car is transferred into a pre-pour mold storage. The mold-bearing car is then moved onto a second elevator which lifts the car upwardly adjacent an elevated pouring deck. As the mold is elevated, a jacket and weight are automatically deposited thereon, and the mold is poured while the car rests on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is then moved forwardly through a jacket-and-weight transfer station, after which the jacket and weight are automatically removed and recycled back for positioning on another mold arriving on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is moved through a cooling region, and this is then transferred onto a third elevator which is tiltable so that the mold is dumped from the car.

  • Patent number: 4415017
Abstract: An electromagnetic casting system for casting materials comprising the apparatus and process for electromagnetically containing and forming molten material during a casting run into a desired shape. During the casting run, a liquid-solid interface defines molten material head and solid material portions of the casting. The electromagnetic containing and forming device includes an inductor applying a magnetic field to the molten material. The magnetic field defines a containment zone for the molten material. An alternating current is applied to the inductor to generate the magnetic field. The improvement comprises controlling the location of the liquid-solid interface in the containment zone. The location of the liquid-solid interface along the periphery of the casting is monitored.

  • Patent number: 4412580
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for and a method for more uniform and rapid cooling of molten metal, which is continuously cast into a wheel-band machine, by dispersing a relatively small amount of coolant from the periphery of a band presser wheel onto the continuous metal band at the point where the molten metal first contacts said band, with the unexpected beneficial effects of increasing the cast bar temperature and greatly reducing the amount of inverse segregation on the band-side surface of the resulting cast bar.

  • Patent number: 4411304
Abstract: In a driving roller stand for continuous casting plants with at least two adjacently arranged strand guides, at least one separately arranged driving roller is provided for each of the strands. A first driving roller is designed as a hollow construction unit with a first driving element. A driving shaft provided with a second driving element, of a second driving roller coaxially arranged with the first one penetrates this hollow construction unit. Each of the driving rollers is separately arranged on the driving roller stand. In order to be able to arrange the strands as closely adjacent as possible in such a driving roller stand, the driving shaft is engageable out of and in both the second driving roller and the second driving element and is axially removable out of and installable into the hollow construction unit of the first driving roller.

  • Patent number: 4405009
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for measuring the displacement and velocity of metal ingots, such as aluminum ingots, during direct chill casting thereof. A tube rests on the table carrying the ingot and travels with this table. Attached to this tube is a cable, forming a part of a linear velocity transducer, which transducer senses movement in the cable and correlates this movement to the velocity and displacement of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4399859
Abstract: A multiple casting die assembly, useful for receiving injected molten metal under pressure, is disclosed. Plural pairs of mating die members are abuttingly arranged in series; the parting plane for each pair of die members is generally arranged to bisect each of the casting cavities resulting in mating cavity portions that meet at the parting plane. Means are provided for clamping the die members in series and for forceably separating the die members which automatically severs the sprue. The clamping force is reduced to that needed for only one casting cavity and cycle time is decreased for withdrawal and ejection of sound die cast bodies.

  • Patent number: 4393916
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for pressure die casting of metals and alloys involving the action of increased gas pressure on the solidifying melt. In this apparatus, the gas is pressurized automatically during the stroke of the press and pressurized gas at elevated pressure is applied to molten metal in the die cavity immediately after the closing of the die. For this purpose, the apparatus comprises a hydraulic press including a cylinder and a piston slidably mounted therein, which piston divides the cylinder into a first and second chamber. The first chamber is in communication with a source of pressurized liquid and the second chamber is in communication with a gas retaining cavity disposed in the piston rod of the piston. A press plate and die having at least one die cavity is rigidly mounted on the piston rod. The cavity of the die is connected by means of corresponding valves to a supply reservoir with gas under low pressure.

  • Patent number: 4392523
Abstract: A process and apparatus for controlling the level of a molten metal surface in a continuous casting mould uses a probe located either in the molten or above the surface of the molten metal. The probe is connected to a high-frequency transmitter which is arranged to induce voltages in each of two secondary receiver-coils, the receiver-coils being in coupling relationship with a compensating coil and a further coil connected to the probe. The receiver-coils are connected in opposition to one another so that a difference voltage of zero is arranged to be produced when the molten metal surface is at the required level but that the difference voltage is used, when departing from zero, for control purposes of the height of the molten metal surface.

  • Patent number: 4380262
Abstract: An apparatus useful for the production of wide amorphous or polycrystalline metal foils of substantially uniform thickness by the double roller chill quenching method comprises a fixed roller member and a spring-loaded movable roller member mounted on a set of mounting rails. The movable roller member is maintained at a selectably adjustable minimum spacing from the fixed roller member and is free to move away from this position of minimum spacing to accommodate forces tending to displace the rollers from one another. A spring urges the movable roller toward the fixed roller and provides for selectable adjustment of the restoring force urging the rollers together.
