  • Patent number: 7959292
Abstract: Generally, the present invention relates to medical devices and a method of vision screening, and more particularly to a pediatric vision screening system and method thereof that identifies a risk factor for amblyopia or diagnoses amblyopia by measurement of microstrabismus. An embodiment of the invention is directed to a method of patient screening for risk factors for amblyopia which includes the steps of illuminating the eye with polarized light, scanning the polarized light about the eye, capturing the retro-reflected light emanating back from the eye, analyzing the retro-reflected light to determine ocular misalignment; and calculating a metric to determine if the patient passes or fails the screening test thereby providing an indication that the patient may have a risk of amblyopia based on either strabismus or anisometropia. The method is effective at detecting amblyopia related to focusing problems without the measuring the focus of the eye directly.

  • Patent number: 7952822
Abstract: A lens activating device includes at least one elastic piece, at least one stationary piece and a movable piece. At least one elastic piece has at least four sheet portions and four sets of elastic portions. Each set of the elastic portions are serpentine and connected between two sheet portions in order to make the at least one elastic piece form a closed ring. The stationary piece is connected to two sheet portions, and the movable portion is connected to the other two sheet portions. The elastic force generated by the four sets of elastic portions exerts a restoring force on the movable piece. Via this arrangement, the slight rotation of the movable piece within the lens activating device can be reduced. Further, the problem that the elastic piece may scrape the neighboring elements can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7948695
Abstract: An optical element is moved in six-degrees-of-freedom. Three first displacement sensors are disposed on a base plate and measure respective displacement amounts of three mutually different points on the optical element in a first direction. A second displacement sensor measures a displacement amount of one point on the optical element in a second direction. Two third displacement sensors measure respective displacement amounts of two mutually different points on the optical element in a third direction. A transformation processor transforms the six measured displacement amounts. A calibration processor calibrates the transformed displacement amounts with a calibration matrix of which coefficients are previously obtained to calibrate the displacement amounts in the six-degrees-of-freedom, which have errors due to measurement errors of the displacement sensors. A controller outputs command values based on differences between the calibrated displacement amounts and target displacement amounts.

  • Patent number: 7940446
Abstract: An optical modulator comprising a spacing-controllable etalon having at least one sprung micro-mirror suspended above a substrate. At least one electrically insulating stop is provided between the micro-mirror and the substrate to avoid short-circuit when the micro-mirror is drawn towards the substrate by an applied voltage. An optical detector detects the time of arrival of a first laser pulse. A control circuit predicts from this an arrival time of the next incident laser pulse and, responsive to a control signal, either retains the micro-mirror in its pulled-down state held against the insulating stops or releases the micro-mirror at a time predicted to maximise or minimise the light transmitted through the modulator. After a time interval calculated to permit a predetermined number of mechanical oscillations, the micro-mirror is pulled back down onto the stops.
