Patent number: 8318967Abstract: The present invention provides a polysilane-supported transition metal catalysts or a polysilane/inorganic compound-supported transition metal catalysts, wherein various types of transition metals are supported by polysilane compounds, or combination of polysilanes and inorganic compounds. The catalysts of the present invention are hardly soluble in hydrocarbons and alcohols and are useful as catalysts in heterogeneous system for various organic synthetic reactions using the above solvents. Polysilanes supporting transition metals are easily crosslinkable by thermal treatment, microwave irradiation, UV irradiation or chemical methods such as hydrosilylation reaction and are changed to be insoluble in various solvents keeping high catalytic activity. Moreover, the stability and operability of polysilane-supported transition metal catalysts will be improved by the support thereof on inorganic compounds.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2007Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Japan Science and Technology AgencyInventors: Shu Kobayashi, Hidekazu Oyamada, Ryo Akiyama, Takeshi Naito

Patent number: 8314267Abstract: Catalytic processes for the conversion of 2,5-dimethyl furan (DMF) to para-xylene are described. Para-xylene is a key product that is currently obtained commercially from petroleum sources. However, it has now been determined that the cycloaddition of ethylene to DMF provides an alternative route to para-xylene. Advantageously, the DMF starting material for the processes may be synthesized from carbohydrates (e.g., glucose or fructose), thereby providing a pathway that relies at least partly, if not completely, on renewable feedstocks.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2009Date of Patent: November 20, 2012Assignee: UOP LLCInventor: Timothy A.
