  • Patent number: 5940250
Abstract: A dual element head is provided that includes a read element and a separate write element, wherein the read width of the read element is greater than the write width of the write element. The head also includes an erase notch for creating an erase strip along the edge of data written by the write element during a write operation. The width of the erase strip is optimized so that undesired data on the track, that could otherwise be read by the wider read element during a subsequent read operation, is removed during the write operation.

  • Patent number: 5940253
Abstract: The pole pieces of a thin film head are formed by two thin film layers of the magnetic metal NiFe, each NiFe layer being about 20,000 angstroms thick. These two NiFe layers are separated by an electrically insulating layer of alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3), ceramic or NiFe oxide that is about 100 angstroms thick. In one embodiment, a hard-baked photoresist layer is formed only around the edges of the first NiFe layer, the electrically insulating layer is deposited over the top surface of the first NiFe layer and over the hard-baked photoresist layer, and the second NiFe layer is then deposited, thus providing a three-layer metal/insulator/metal pole piece wherein the hard baked photoresist blocks edge short circuiting between the two thin film NiFe layers.

  • Patent number: 5940248
Abstract: A first and second rotary members are supported on a holder 3 secured to a main chassis of disk drive apparatus. The first rotary member includes a detecting portion. The second rotary member includes a contact portion that moves in and out of the insertion path of a disk cartridge to be inserted into the holder. When the disk cartridge is being inserted, an opening-and-closing pin opens the shutter of the disk. Through the detecting portion, the opening shutter rotates the first rotary member, which then rotates the second rotary member to thereby move the contact portion of the second rotary member out of the insertion path of the disk cartridge, allowing the disk cartridge to be inserted. If the shutter fails to open when the disk cartridge is being inserted, the contact portion of the second rotary member will remain in the insertion path and block the insertion of the disk cartridge.

  • Patent number: 5936796
Abstract: A library apparatus including a feeder mechanism for an accessor robot. The feeder mechanism includes a feeding cable for the accessor robot. The feeding cable has a first end and a second end. The first end is connected to the accessor robot, and the second end is connected to a reference position (e.g., a housing of the library apparatus). The feeding cable is wrapped around a cable drum. The cable drum is rotatably supported to an arm. A wire rope acts on the arm to apply a tension to the feeding cable. A stress removing mechanism for removing a torsional stress of the wire rope is connected to at least one end of the wire rope. The stress removing mechanism rotatably supports the wire rope. With this configuration, the torsional stress of the wire rope is removed to thereby improve fatigue characteristics or the like of the wire rope and accordingly improve the reliability of the library apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5923503
Abstract: A longitudinal bias layer and an electrode layer are formed on a non-magnetic material layer. The longitudinal bias layer and the electrode layer are partially removed by an etching technique so that a narrow gap defining the track width Tw is formed in the longitudinal bias layer and the electrode layer. Furthermore, a three-layer film consisting of, from bottom to top, a magnetoresistance effect layer, a non-magnetic layer, and a transverse bias layer, or otherwise a spin valve film consisting of a free magnetic layer, a non-magnetic layer, a fixed magnetic layer and a bias layer is formed on the above structure. The three-layer film or the spin valve film is then partially removed by an etching technique so that the three-layer film or the spin valve film remains only in the above-described narrow gap formed in the longitudinal bias layer and the electrode layer.

  • Patent number: 5917676
Abstract: A vibration control device for controlling vibration of a disc drive supported in a compartment of a mass storage array. Disc drives stored in a compartment of a mass storage array may move within the compartment during operation of the mass storage array. Movement of a disc drive in a compartment may affect the performance of the disc drive to retrieve data from and write data to selected data tracks of a disc. In particular, vibration along an extent of the disc drive aligned with an operational stroke of the actuator mechanism may skew the operational stroke of the disc heads supported via the actuator mechanism. The vibration control device includes a spring which is adapted to exert a biasing force to a disc drive inserted into a compartment to restrict movement of the disc drive within the compartment.
