  • Patent number: 5810279
Abstract: A severing and spool assembly employs various weakening devices and techniques to provide a shear force along a narrow elongate portion of the web. One method involves scoring a paper web being spooled in a manner to provide for a controlled tearing along the scored web across its width. A portion of the web adjacent the origin of the score is attached to a take up spool using an adhesive flag member. The change in direction of the spool from roughly horizontal to nearly vertical places forces on the web sufficient to cause web tearing in a manner substantially following the score. High pressure air may be used to assist the vertical turn up action of the paper onto an empty spool.

  • Patent number: 5810282
Abstract: A web winding apparatus and a method of operating the apparatus include a turret assembly, a core loading apparatus, and a core stripping apparatus. The turret assembly supports rotatably driven mandrels for engaging hollow cores upon which a paper web is wound. Each mandrel is driven in a closed mandrel path, which can be non-circular. The core loading apparatus conveys cores onto the mandrels during movement of the mandrels along the core loading segment of the closed mandrel path, and the core stripping apparatus removes each web wound core from its respective mandrel during movement of the mandrel along the core stripping segment of the closed mandrel path. The turret assembly can be rotated continuously, and the sheet count per wound log can be changed as the turret assembly is rotating. The apparatus can also include a mandrel having a deformable core engaging member.

  • Patent number: 5806783
Abstract: A method and device for winding a material or fibrous web, wherein a number of separate web rolls are formed around separate roll cores placed one after another and side by side, while being supported by support members and loaded by a load of rider rolls in rider roll units in a truncated rider roll unit. During disturbed winding situations when the web roll separate from the winding rolls, the attachment of the rider roll unit/units to the rider roll beam is changed so that the rider rolls load the web rolls that are in a disturbed movement with a load substantially higher than the rider roll load during normal winding.

  • Patent number: 5806788
Abstract: A reel assembly for large packages of cable and wire. The reel assembly includes a pair of separate drum segments which, when assembled, form a hollow cylindrical drum for winding wire or cable therearound. The drum segments have inwardly extending beads which lock separate end flanges on opposite sides of the drum. The end flanges are of two piece construction including a hub secured to a skirt The hub has a lip for engaging the beads of the drum segments when the reel is assembled. The reel assembly has means for automatically releasably locking the drum segments to the hub lip when the drum segments side edges are urged into engagement with one another.

  • Patent number: 5806780
Abstract: A sub-system for controlling the flow of cable pulled from a cable pack by an automatic cable processing machine. The sub-system may include a barrel cap for containing and controlling the outward momentum of the cable over a cable pack such as a barrel and guiding the cable through a passage in the top of the cap. The passage is positioned in line with a center line of the barrel. A variable rate braking system may be positioned over the barrel and adjacent an outer wall of the barrel to control the circular movement of the cable as the cable is unwound from the barrel. A spacer may be positioned to prevent the cable from being pulled towards the center of the barrel or toward the barrel core and so that the cable engages the variable rate braking system. The system prevents cable from overlapping, entangling, knotting and snapping during the automatic processing of the cable for use in wire harnesses.

  • Patent number: 5799897
Abstract: A method and a system are used for supplying printed products such as newspapers, magazines or brochures or intermediate products for such printed products (sheets, part-products) as substantially continuous scaled streams to a plurality of feeding points of processing stations. The method and system are designed to allow a supply which is as flexible as possible and at the same time economic. The scaled streams are continuous and are produced selectably from products in storage formations, e.g. rolls, vertical stacks, manipulatable stacks, spiral stacks. Discrete scaled formations are prepared in separate method steps in which different loading devices depending on the product formation and supplying devices are loaded with these scaled formations. Loaded supplying devices are transported to the feeding points.

  • Patent number: 5794872
Abstract: A film feeding apparatus includes a roller pair for pinching a film stored and wound within a film container or its leader, and a restricting passage for restricting a posture of a non-pinched portion of the film or its leader. The roller pair is disposed in such a manner that the film or its leader is entrained about one roller of the roller pair in an arcuate form toward an upstream side in a film feeding direction relative to a pinching position of the roller pair. With driving rotation of the roller pair pinching the film or its leader, the film is withdrawn from the film container held at a holding portion to be fed to a film processing section. The restricting passage is curved along an entraining passage of the roller for the film or its leader as the restricting passage is viewed in a direction of an axis of the roller.

  • Patent number: 5794878
Abstract: A conventional webbing-locking inertia reel is modified by integration of a device for the prevention of slap-back lock of the inertia reel upon excessively rapid retraction of the webbing worn by a seat occupant as a safety belt and/or harness. The device also slows the retraction of the webbing enough to prevent a hard collision of the webbing stop at the inertia reel. This is accomplished by interacting the reel shaft with a specially designed damping disk so that both the shaft and the damping disk rotate counter-clockwise when an external force pulls the webbing from its rotatable spool, while simultaneously the shaft also interacts with a conventional housed return spring, causing it to wind and build up a rewinding force, which, when the external force is removed or ceases, causes rotation of the shaft, spool, and damping disk clockwise and rewinds the webbing on the spool.

  • Patent number: 5791586
Abstract: A tape hub including a support portion defining a peripheral surface around an axis adapted to frictionally receive a cylindrical inner surface of a core wound with tape, and axially spaced radial projections and locating members on the tape hub for positioning a first edge of the length of tape wrapped around the core at either of two discrete tape edge positions axially with respect to the hub. The tape hub is useful on devices that adhere tape along one edge of masking material to afford selecting different amounts of overlap between the tape and the masking material. The tape hub can have a plurality of radially extending hub portions having spaces therebetween and axially extending ribs on the hub portions defining its peripheral surface with the peripheral surface being adapted to frictionally receive the cylindrical inner surface of cores of slightly different inner diameters.
