Abstract: Systems and methods are described for authorizing access to network service based upon information obtained from a set-top box (STB) or other subscriber equipment associated with the user requesting access to the network service. The network service suitably contacts a subscriber device associated with the user via the network in response to a request for access that is received from the user. Information obtained from the subscriber device is processed to thereby determine if the user is authorized to use the service. If the user is authorized, then the service is provided via the network. Access to an online video stream, for example, can be conditioned upon the requesting user having an appropriate account with a cable, direct broadcast satellite (DBS) or other service that can be verified through contact with the user's STB or other subscriber equipment.

Abstract: A system and method for routing an output signal comprising at least one channel carrying a selected program to the user selecting the selected program. The system transmits the other programming to the user, in addition to or in place of the selected program, for the duration of the other programming.

Abstract: Embodiments related to selecting advertisements for display to targeted viewers are disclosed. In one example embodiment, an advertisement is selected by, for each of a plurality of advertisements, aggregating a plurality of emotional response profiles from a corresponding plurality of prior viewers of the advertisement to form an aggregated emotional response profile for the advertisement, wherein each of the emotional response profiles comprises a temporal record of a prior viewer's emotional response to the advertisement. The method further includes identifying a group of potentially positively correlated viewers for the targeted viewer, filtering the aggregated emotional response profiles based on the group of potentially positively correlated viewers, selecting a particular advertisement from the plurality of advertisements based on a correlation of the filtered aggregated emotional response profiles, and sending the particular advertisement for display to the targeted viewer.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage mediums storing at least one program for identifying an end of a television program is described. In some implementations, a method comprises: periodically obtaining subtitles for a plurality of television programs during respective predetermined time intervals that include respective times when respective television programs in the plurality of television programs are scheduled to end; identifying sequences of strings from the subtitles for the plurality of television programs in accordance with predefined criteria associated with the plurality of television programs; and updating an aggregation of subtitles indicating that a television program in the plurality of television program has ended, with the identified sequences of strings. In some implementations, the method is implemented at a computing device having at least one processor and memory storing at least one program for execution by the at least one processor.

Abstract: Systems and methods for delaying automatic playing of a video based on visibility of the video are presented. In one or more aspects, a system is provided that includes a visibility component configured to determine degree of visibility of a video, or representation of the video, to a user as displayed in a user interface generated at a client device, and an auto-play component configured to delay automatic playing of the video based in part on the degree of visibility being below a threshold.

Abstract: During or prior to streaming of video content to a client device, a server provides data configuring an interactive object on the client device. When activated by user input, the interactive object enables a user to select one or more video ads to be streamed to the client device during an upcoming ad break, during play of the streaming video. The interactive object enables the user to perform the selection without interrupting viewing of the video.

Abstract: A classification method and system for possible content alteration of a media work may include criteria regarding content that is feasible for alteration. Such criteria may be maintained in records that are accessible to an interested party. Some embodiments may include a record of primary authorization rights applicable to a possible content alteration. A further embodiment feature may include a record of secondary authorization rights applicable to substitute altered content incorporated in a derivative version. Various techniques may be used to incorporate substitute altered content in a derivative version of the media work in accordance with applicable substitution guidelines.

Abstract: Systems and methods for recommending content to a user that the user previously viewed for viewing again are presented. A system includes a crawling component configured to crawl watch histories of a plurality of users, wherein the watch histories reflect videos watched by respective users of the plurality of users, and identify based on the watch histories, a set of videos that have been watched more than once by individual users of the plurality of users. An identification component further analyzes watch history of a first user, wherein the watch history of the first user reflects videos watched by the first user, and identifies based on the watch history of the first user, one or more videos watched by the first user that are included in the set of videos, and a recommendation component recommends the one or more videos to the first user for re-watching.

Abstract: A digital television system is connected to a mobile computing and communication device through an ad hoc communication link. A program broadcasted by the television system includes a plurality frames delivered in a sequential manner. A user can freeze a frame by employing the mobile device. The frame can then be transmitted to the mobile device and be redisplayed on the mobile device. The redisplayed frame includes visible symbols pointing to displayed items associated with advertising messages. The frame can also be stored in a photograph folder for the user to view the frame and associated advertising messages in a later time.

An identity of a user-selected object in a television program being presented to a user is determined. Based at least in part on the identity of the user-selected object in the television program, information to present to the user is determined. The determined information is presented to the user on a television display.

Abstract: User-based parental controls (UBPC) are provided. UBPC are provided to users according to a user profile associated with a specific user. Parental controls may be tailored to meet a parental control need according to each user. User profiles may be created by one or more administrative users and may include restrictions according to a TV, movie, application, or game rating system, specific channels, or specific programs. User profiles may be stored in a remote database allowing for various media content receiving and/or viewing devices to access the user profiles for applying parental control features according to a specific user profile. A user profile may be altered by one or more administrative users who may create an override access code which may allow the administrative user to manage other users' parental controls.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting triggering events in a data stream, comprising extracting audio portions from the data stream, detecting a sequence of one or more Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) signals representing the events from the extracted audio portions, and logging data representative of the sequence of DTMF signals into a database.

Abstract: A remote time shift buffer system with shadow tuning. The remote time shift buffer system includes a client in communication with a remote video recorder. The client tunes to a channel from a television signal source and sends the channel content to a television. When a channel change occurs at the client, the remote video recorder tunes to the same channel as the client and buffers the content. When a pause live television (PLTV) function is initiated, the remote video recorder generates an independent RTSB content stream using the buffered content. Once the RTSB content stream is available, the client switches inputs and displays the RTSB content stream from the remote video recorder. Manipulating the position within the RTSB content stream does not affect buffering of the live content. The remote time shift buffer system provides pause live television functionality with minimal loss of content.

Abstract: A method and system for remote control at a client of a multimedia content distribution network (MCDN) enables a user to configure a wireless user device as a remote control device (RCD). The RCD may communicate via a wireless network and an MCDN server to execute remote control commands at the MCDN client. The RCD may implement a remote control interface, including control elements configured for touch operation. The control elements may provide specific interactive functionality for channel selection, volume selection, playback of multimedia content, and other remote control features. The RCD may also receive feedback and status information associated with remote control commands.

Abstract: A multiplexed transport interface (MTSIF) may be utilized during communication between a demodulation module and a video processing system-on-chip (SoC). The MTSIF may enable concurrent demodulation of a plurality of input modulated video streams, via a plurality of demodulator chips within the demodulation module, by multiplexing data generated by the demodulator chips via the MTSIF during communication between the demodulator module and the video processing SoC. The MTSIF may also be utilized for communicating control signals, which may be used in controlling and/or managing operations of the demodulation module, the video processing SoC, and/or the MTSIF. Communication via the MTSIF may be synchronized. Packets communicated via the MTSIF may be timestamped. Timestamp counters may be used in the demodulation module and the video processing SoC to generate and/or track timestamps in communicated packets. The timestamp counter may be synchronized, using control signals communicated via the MTSIF.

Abstract: Embodiments related to delivering a video stream to a requesting viewer are disclosed. In one example embodiment, a video stream is delivered by receiving a request for the video stream from a requesting device, the request including the requesting viewer's identity, assembling a list of selected video content items for display to the requesting viewer, the selected video items being selected from a plurality of video items based on the identity of the requesting viewer and a viewing interest profile comprising the requesting viewer's viewing interests, and sending the video stream for display, the video stream including one or more of the selected video items.
