  • Patent number: 8804680
Abstract: Systems and methods of efficiently providing network access for a portable electronic device while moderating power consumption are described. The electronic device may have a cellular radio and a network radio for communicating with an alternative network. In a default state, the electronic device may carry out communications using the cellular radio, and the network radio may be in an off state. Periodically, the electronic device may determine if the electronic device has moved. If so, a location of the electronic device may be determined and a check may be carried out to determine if the electronic device is in range of an available alternative network. If the electronic device is in range of an available alternative network, the network radio may be turned on and an attempt to connect to the alternative network may be made.

  • Patent number: 8724638
Abstract: Methods and systems for selectively processing VLAN traffic from different networks while allowing flexible VLAN identifier assignment are disclosed. According to one aspect, a layer 2 switch includes a virtual switch identifier data structure that associates a VLAN identifier extracted from a layer 2 frame and a port identifier corresponding to a port on which a frame is received with a virtual switch identifier. The virtual switch identifier is used to select a per-virtual-switch data structure, such as a forwarding table. The per-virtual-switch data structure is used to control processing of the layer 2 frame on a per-virtual-switch basis. The per-virtual-switch data structure may also be updated separately from the data structures assigned to other virtual switches.

  • Patent number: 8699343
Abstract: Described are methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for limiting server overload via client control. A first set of a plurality of requests are transmitted to a server at a first transmission rate during a first period of time. The first transmission rate is limited to be less than or equal to a first transmission limit rate. An overload value is determined based on whether at least two or more requests of the first set of requests for service satisfy an overload criterion. A second transmission limit rate is determined based on the overload value and the first transmission limit rate. A second set of a plurality of requests is transmitted to the server at a second transmission rate during a second period of time. The second transmission rate is limited to be less than or equal to the second transmission limit rate.

  • Patent number: 8660143
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing data packets in a network data processing system. The data processing system monitors for the data packets on the network data processing system. The data processing system sends a response data packet to a source endpoint that sent a request data packet in response to detecting the request data packet in the data packets requesting a first identifier for a first device at a target endpoint in the network data processing system. A response data packet has a selected identifier for a selected device in the monitoring data processing system. The data processing system processes a set of data packets in response to detecting the set of data packets having the selected identifier. The data processing system sends the set of data packets to the target endpoint with the first identifier for the first device in place of the selected identifier.
