Patent number: 6254583Abstract: A protective undergarment having an outer shell of fluid resistant material and a fluid containment sling of fluid resistant material connected to the inner surface of the shell and adapted to receive and retain a fluid absorbent pad. The ends of the shell are folded in to establish frontal and rear bumpers. One end of the sling is folded under the frontal bumper to form a pocket that is attached to and hidden beneath the frontal bumper, and remains open to receive one end of the fluid absorbent pad. The other end of the sling is attached to the rear bumper. This construction accommodates a pad of greater length for improved absorption without increasing the length of the shell. Methods of constructing protective undergarments with unique hidden pocket slings and fasteners are described.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1997Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Tailored Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Fredrica V. Patent number: 6254582Abstract: A supply of absorbent panty liner pads formed by a contiguous longitudinal array of pad segments forming a strip. The strip has locally weakened zones to facilitate tearing off segments from the strip without the use of a cutting tool. Each pad segment is shorter than a standard panty liner pad so that approximately three segments are required to form a standard length pad. By tearing off two, three, four, or five segments in one piece, the user can create a panty liner having a short, standard, long or extra long length to suit her needs on any given day. The strip is wrapped upon itself into a roll so that pressure sensitive positioning adhesive strips are placed into contact with release surfaces formed on the strip, thereby protecting the adhesive prior to use without the need for release paper.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1998Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: McNeil-PPC, Inc.Inventors: Kathleen Denise O'Donnell, Thomas Joseph Luceri

Patent number: 6251098Abstract: Disclosed is an infusion pump and a fluid container for expelling a fluid from the fluid container to a patient. The pump comprises a housing having a chamber therein for receiving the fluid reservoir. A first wall is provided on the housing for contacting the fluid reservoir, and a second wall is movable from a first position distanced from the first wall to form the chamber therebetween, and a second position relatively closer to the first wall. Advancing the movable wall from the first position to the second position expels fluid from the collapsible reservoir. Preferably, the first and second walls are provided with non-planar complementary surface configurations for contacting the collapsible reservoir. Retraction mechanisms for retracting the movable wall from the second position to the first position, and user readable indicium of the status of the dispensation cycle are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1997Date of Patent: June 26, 2001Assignee: I-Flow, Corp.Inventors: Kenneth W. Patent number: 6234966Abstract: A noncontact type tonometer monitors the rate of change X(t) in pressure between a standard curve and a measured curve. If X(t) exceeds a value of 1.3, the application of air pressure is stopped to prevent an abnormal rise in pressure. If X(t) is equal to 1, then the measured curve follows the standard curve and correction is not required. If X(t) is not equal to 1, an error condition exists and an amended time t′ is calculated based on the rate of change X(t). Instead of a calculated amended time, an approximated standard curve can also be determined based on either an equation stored in a memory or by matching the measured curve with one of a plurality of standard curves stored in memory.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1994Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Nidek Co., Ltd.Inventor: Tetsuyuki Miwa

Patent number: 6235011Abstract: A three-piece tape landing zone is provided which allows repeated fastening and unfastening of the tape tabs for inspection of the diaper. The three-piece TLZ is located at the front waist portion of the diaper. A center TLZ piece is positioned between and overlaps or underlaps the edges of the two outer TLZ pieces. The center TLZ piece has release characteristics different from that of the outer two pieces such that the tape tabs do not adhere securely to the center TLZ piece. This arrangement ensures correct alignment of the tape tabs on the outer TLZ surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1998Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Paragon Trade Brands, Inc.Inventor: Susan L. Patent number: 6210346Abstract: A method for inserting and maintaining an intracranial pressure monitoring catheter within a skull of a patient using a flexible catheter having a stylet insertion aperture formed in the side wall thereof opening to a stylet lumen extending to a closed distal end of the catheter. Two incisions are made in the scalp at a spaced distance apart. A bore hole through the patient's skull is then formed beneath a first of the incisions, and the catheter is inserted underneath the scalp from the second incision and out of the first incision until the stylet insertion aperture is exposed. A stylet is then inserted into the stylet insertion aperture and into the stylet lumen to impart stiffness to a distal portion of the catheter. The stylet-containing portion of the catheter is then inserted through the bore hole and advanced such that a pressure sensing/transmitting component on the distal end of the catheter is located intracranially.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1997Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: Edwards Lifesciences Corp.Inventors: John P. Patent number: 6210388Abstract: A method of manufacturing an absorbent article in the form of a pants diaper or a sanitary panty starts from a flat blank which includes an elongated absorbent body (5) enclosed between two casing sheets (2, 9) which at opposing front and rear end parts of the absorbent body have side parts which extend laterally beyond the body on opposite sides thereof. The method includes the step of folding the blank about a transverse axis so that the end edges of the side parts lie edge-to-edge. The front and rear side parts of the blank which oppose one another in the folded state of the blank are joined together by a releasable and refastenable fastener (20). A pants diaper can be manufactured in accordance with this method.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1996Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: SCA Hygiene Products ABInventors: Urban Widlund, Anders Gustafsson

Patent number: 6177608Abstract: A tampon for feminine hygiene having an absorbent core and a cover disposed around the core which is permeable to body fluids, the cover being provided with flexible barrier strips which are spreadable from the tampon surface. The barrier strips serve to close the space between the tampon surface and the walls of the vaginal duct when the tampon is inserted, preventing leakage especially in the time just after insertion. The barrier strips may be of either hydrophilic or hydrophobic material. In the embodiment in which the barrier strips are hydrophilic, they serve as absorbent elements of the tampon in addition to the tampon core. In the embodiment in which the barrier strips are of a hydrophobic material, they direct menstrual fluids inwardly to the absorbent tampon core. In yet another embodiment, the barrier strips may be of a folded two-layer construction filled with an absorbent material.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1997Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventor: Fritz Weinstrauch

Patent number: 6174303Abstract: A disposable absorbent article defines an outer cover, an absorbent chassis and a dual fastening system. The dual fastening system includes a pair of primary fasteners located on the outer cover in one of the waist regions of the absorbent article and a pair of secondary fasteners located on the outer cover in the opposite waist region of the absorbent article. The primary fasteners are configured to engage an outer surface of the absorbent article to maintain the article about the waist of the wearer and the secondary fasteners are configured to engage a body facing surface of the absorbent chassis to support the absorbent chassis. The absorbent chassis is attached to the outer cover at the waist edges and remains at least partially unattached from the outer cover between the waist edges to allow the outer cover to have a blousy appearance. Thus, the disposable absorbent article has an aesthetically pleasing garment-like appearance and improved fit and containment during use.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1997Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark WorldwideInventors: Jody Dorothy Suprise, Barbara Ann Owen
