  • Patent number: 6592719
Abstract: A shoe press head indexing system wherein axial tension is applied to a blanket in a shoe press of a papermaking machine by means of respective fluid actuated piston and cylinder assemblies which are mounted inside the blanket and apply axial pressure to the first and second heads between which the blanket is mounted. Neither head is fixed or limited in position at any time. The respective fluid assemblies include respective displacement sensors whereby the positions of the heads, and thereby of the blanket, relative to the press can be determined and monitored. Automatic adjustments can then be made to the pressure in the assemblies and hence to the positions of the heads to maintain the blanket in substantially central position on the press.

  • Patent number: 6521095
Abstract: A bracket of graphite epoxy has a cylindrical portion which hingedly fits within a dovetail groove extending in the machine direction across the injection face of a papermaking headbox. The bracket has downstream portions defining a vane-receiving slot which receives a plastic sheet vane which is held by screws. The bracket is laid up of carbon fibers oriented so that the coefficient of thermal expansion matches the steel from which the headbox is manufactured. A two-part metal mold is used to define the underside and the bead portion of the bracket. A rubber gasket of Shore 70 material forms the center of the bead portion about which prepregs of graphite cloth are wrapped. A removable polytetrafluoroethylene insert defines the slot during molding. The assembly is placed under a vacuum bag and heated, causing the rubber gasket to expand and press the overlying graphite prepregs against the sides of the mold.

  • Patent number: 6464835
Abstract: The invention concerns an equipment and a method in a twin-wire former, in which a partly pre-drained or non-drained fiber stock is passed to between the forming wires of the web former in the vicinity of the former roll (11) or of a water drain box, in which connection water is drained out of the stock web by means of the former roll (11) or the water drain box. The twin-wire former comprises a rib (20) in connection with the former roll (11) or the water drain box in the lateral area of the wires (H2), which rib has been fitted to control the running of the second forming wire H2) passed from the gap roll. By means of the rib (20), in the lateral area of the wire runs, the point at which said forming wire (H2) reaches contact with the first forming wire in connection with the former roll (11) or the water drain box is shifted further away in the machine direction. The rib (20) is an oblong structure, which has a maximal height (Hmax) in the middle area of the rib (20).

  • Patent number: 6447648
Abstract: A Conventional blanket material, preferably a woven fabric or scrim, is formed into a loop of the desired dimensions and impregnated and coated with a two-component urethane resin. As the urethane is applied to the woven substrate, short fibers are introduced into the urethane through a nozzle which aligns the fibers to run in the cross-machine direction. The fibers are introduced in sufficient quantities to provide significant structural reinforcement of the urethane in the cross-machine direction. The coated blanket is then ground to a desired constant thickness and an array of parallel grooves running in the machine direction are milled into the urethane coating. The anisotropic fiber reinforcement provides sufficient modulus to the urethane system to prevent the grooves from collapsing under the applied loads of the extended nip press. The reinforcing fibers may be glass, carbon fiber, synthetic polymer or other structural fiber material.
