Patent number: 5511803Abstract: A braking system is provided for an in-line roller skate for skating on hard skate-supporting surfaces. The roller skate includes a shoe, a wheel-supporting frame attached to the shoe, and a plurality of aligned wheels operably supported by the wheel-supporting frame. The braking system includes an extension connected to the wheel-supporting frame including a pair of opposing flanges, a brake pad operably supported on the extension, and a braking wheel positioned generally in alignment with and behind the plurality of aligned wheels. The braking system further includes an axle rotatably supporting the braking wheel. The axle is supported on the extension by a support mechanism for sliding movement between various braking positions such that, as the braking wheel engages the hard surface with increasing force, the braking wheel moves toward the braking pad and generates increasing braking force. Various support mechanisms for slideably supporting the braking wheel are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1994Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Inventor: Edward O. Klukos

Patent number: 5507523Abstract: A mechanical igniter for a gas generator has a weight, a latch lever and a firing pin as movable elements to fire a percussion cap attached to the gas generator in response to acceleration, and further has a restraint member and a controller therefor as a safety device for making the movable elements immovable. The controller can be activated by attaching the mechanical igniter to the vehicle body, or removing a belt stopper after the mechanical igniter has been attached to the vehicle body, or fastening a seat belt to the occupant's body. Thus, the restraint member is released when the mechanical igniter is attached to the vehicle body, or when the seat belt system is used, thereby automatically and safely releasing the safety device for the igniter.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Takata CorporationInventors: Muneo Nishizawa, Tetsuya Hamaue, Mitsuhiko Hiruta, Koji Hiramatsu

Patent number: 5507359Abstract: A signal corresponding to steering torque detected by a torque detector is inputted into both a control device and a torque signal direction determining device 19. Only when the signal directions of both device are coincident, a signal to drive a motor in that direction is outputted from a motor drive circuit. In this case, even when the steering torque is in a dead zone, a signal of a predetermined direction can be outputted from the torque signal direction determining device by a switching signal. Accordingly, in the power steering control device, even when a torque direction signal sent from the direction determining device is in a dead zone, a signal for driving the motor to assist a steering shaft with rotation is made to be outputted in a predetermined direction, so that steering feelings can be improved when a steering wheel is suddenly reversed.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Shunichi Wada

Patent number: 5503425Abstract: An air bag module (10) includes a housing (12). An air bag (22) is folded and stored in the housing (12). A retaining ring (30) secures the air bag (22) to the housing (12). The retaining ring (30) includes two relatively movable U-shaped members (152, 154). Assembly tabs (210, 212, 252, 254) on the retaining ring members (152, 154) are gripped to move the retaining ring (30), in a collapsed condition, in one direction (32) through a deployment opening (150) into the housing (12). The retaining ring (30) is then expanded and moved in an opposite direction (34) to interlock with the housing (12).Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1994Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc.Inventors: Al S. Patent number: 5501489Abstract: A fully extended pleat for a passenger side air bag cushion employs folds which extend fully across the folded cushion rather than terminating near the center of the folded cushion. A packing advantage of this fold is that there is no free volume or dead space between the pleats thereby reducing the pack size. A performance advantage is that surface friction between the pleats acts to retards somewhat the cushion deployment to reduce hitting and slapping of the occupants in the event of a crash. Finally, a process advantage is that the pleats do not have to be controlled to a specific depth, thereby allowing the folding mechanisms to be concerned only with the final width of the pleats and allowing one less control in the folding operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1995Date of Patent: March 26, 1996Assignee: Morton International, Inc.Inventors: Marc D. Patent number: 5498028Abstract: An apparatus (30) for controlling an actuatable restraining device includes an accelerometer (60) for providing an electrical deceleration signal having a characteristic indicative of vehicle deceleration. An electronic controller (64) is connected to the accelerometer (60) and determines an average crash acceleration (AWIN) value in response to deceleration during a vehicle crash condition. The controller (64) determines a crash velocity value and a variably weighted velocity value (JMM2) equal to crash velocity times a variable weighting factor. The controller (64) provides an actuation signal to actuate the actuatable restraining device (i) when the average velocity value (AWIN) is greater than a first threshold value (WTHRESH) or (ii) when the variably weighted velocity value (JMM2) is greater than a second threshold value (JTHRESH) and the crash velocity is greater than a third threshold value (VTHRESH).Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignees: TRW Inc., Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Mark Carlin, James G. Patent number: 5498023Abstract: A packaging strap or tether for a driver side air bag cushion is integral with the material of the air bag and attached at opposite ends to a studded ring to retain the air bag in its folded condition during initial assembly and subsequent servicing of the air bag module. Made of a material similar to that of the air bag, the tether must be wide enough to control the folded cushion, but notched at a point along its length to reduce its tensile strength to such an extent that it will break on module deployment without adversely affecting module performance.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: Morton International, Inc.Inventors: Stephen L.
