  • Patent number: 6565097
Abstract: A cylinder head gasket comprises a plate, an annular groove formed to surround a combustion chamber opening formed in the plate, a metallic shim fitted into the annular groove, and a full bead located outward of the shim and projecting in the same direction as the shim. The shim is mounted on the plate by an intermittent welding. With this construction, the manufacturing cost can be reduced in comparison to the use of a conventional continuous welding or multi-layer welding. In addition, the thermal deformation of the shim and the plate itself is reduced as compared with when continuous welding or multi-layer welding is used, thus allowing the sealing capability to be improved. In addition, the cylinder head gasket is preferred for use in an engine of a higher combustion temperature than the combustion temperature when the shim is formed of a resinous material.

  • Patent number: 6450507
Abstract: A wellhead housing includes a metal seal with a ring portion and a rib portion. The ring portion includes two frustoconical surfaces for mating with tapered surfaces of a wellhead connector and the wellhead housing. Two conical, metal-to-metal seals are created where the ring portions of the seal engage the tapered surfaces of the wellhead connector and housing. These metal-to-metal seals contain internal pressure within the wellhead. Two legs extend outward from the rib portion. An upward-facing foot surface at the end of the top leg engages the wellhead connector, while a downward-facing foot surface at the end of the bottom leg engages the wellhead housing. A metal-to-metal seal created between each foot surface and the corresponding tubular member resists external pressure to prevent water ingress into the joint.

  • Patent number: 6402158
Abstract: A non-contact plastic or rubber seal disk for bearings with improved sealing performance, which can be thrust into the seal groove of the outer ring concentrically with the bearing, with the bearing axis as center, without difficulty and so tightly as to prevent enclosed lubricant from leaking out, with no undesirable force working on the seal disk in service. The seal disk has a peripheral portion to be caught in a ring-shaped seal groove with a U-shaped section, with the peripheral portion of the seal disk in elastic contact with the inner inside wall and the outer inside wall of the groove. The seal groove is formed inside each outer ring, that is, at each end portion of the inside wall of the outer ring of the bearing and comprises an inner inside wall perpendicular to the axis of the bearing, a bottom wall, and an open-out-formed outer inside wall. The seal disk is so configured as to provide a very narrow gap between the bore wall of the seal disk and the inner ring of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 6357751
Abstract: A protective element for a sealing arrangement having at least one sealing ring has an annular bottom having an inner side and a radially outer side. A mantle portion is connected to the radially outer side. A cylindrical portion is connected to the radially inner side and has a central axis. The mantle portion and the cylindrical portion extend in opposite directions relative to the annular bottom. The cylindrical portion has a circumferential end face extending at least over a portion of the circumference at a slant relative to the central axis. Such a protective element prevents adhering of dust particles to the shaft and penetration of dust particles into the sealing arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6343793
Abstract: A rotary union for use with an electroplating apparatus includes a shaft having a first surface area and an extended surface area, the first surface area having a first aperture therein, the extended surface area having a second aperture therein. The rotary union further includes an outer face seal and an inner face seal. The outer face seal is pressed against, and forms a seal with, the first surface area. The inner face seal is pressed against, and forms a seal with, the extended surface area. A pressure passage coupled to the first aperture passes through the outer face seal and around the outside of the inner face seal. A pressure/vacuum passage coupled to the second aperture passes through the inner face seal.

  • Patent number: 6161836
Abstract: A brush-seal bristle assembly, a brush seal segment containing such assembly, and a rotary machine (such as a steam or gas turbine) containing such segment. The machine has a rotor, a stator casing, and the segment. The segment has a housing and the assembly. The assembly has bristles and a bristle holder. The fixed ends of the bristles are fixedly-attached to the bristle holder, the bristle holder is rotatably-attached to the housing, and the housing is positioned in a channel of the casing. In one example, a spring rotationally biases the bristle holder to a second position to avoid unwanted bristle-rotor contact during machine startup or shutdown. Then, fluid pressure generated by the machine during steady-state operation overcomes the spring bias and rotationally biases the bristle holder to a first position wherein the bristle free ends are closer to the rotor for proper sealing.

  • Patent number: 6123340
Abstract: The present invention provides a seal for use in a modular flow device and is utilized for joining and aligning a first mating surface and second mating surface having axial flow passageways. The seal comprises a protruding annular radiused edge about the axial passageway of the first mating surface and an annular groove about the axial passageway of the second mating surface. The groove has an inner angled wall for engaging with the annular radiused edge when the mating surfaces are compressively joined. Thus, a leak proof seal is formed around the fluid passageway and the passageways are aligned with respect to each other. The invention also relates to check valves for use with modular surface mount systems in which the check valve can be used as a surface mounted component or as part of a substrate that is mounted to or between other substrates and components.
