  • Patent number: 7457269
Abstract: In a cellular mobile telephone system, a mobile station (4d, 4e) requests allocation of a traffic channel by sending a request in a random access channel. Where there is a significant path length difference between locations in a cell and a network antenna, for instance on a satellite (3), not all of the available TDMA slots are used for random access signals. Instead, gaps of one to three time slots are left between valid random access time slots (103, 104) to avoid collision between random access bursts arriving at the network antenna along paths of different lengths.

  • Patent number: 7450600
Abstract: A data carousel contains multiple data files. A procedure determines a worst case latency between successive transmissions of a data file in the data carousel. The worst case latency is compared with a threshold latency value. The composition of the data carousel is modified if the worst case latency exceeds the threshold latency value.

  • Patent number: 7436820
Abstract: When an intelligent VoIP endpoint terminal on a VoIP network becomes inoperative for any reason and can't respond to a service request that it had been programmed for, rather than leaving that service request unfulfilled, a VoIP network-hosted instance of that primarily endpoint terminal-provided service is invoked to handle that request and provide the service that would have otherwise been provided by the endpoint terminal. The network-hosted instance thus executes the requested service on behalf of the unavailable endpoint terminal.

  • Patent number: 7424006
Abstract: A communication system comprising a call control system and a gateway coupled to the call control system and coupled to a first network node and a second network node. The gateway interworks first communications to a first transport type for the first network node and interworks second communications to a second transport type for the second network node. The gateway, responsive to a status change associated with the first network node, transfers a first update message to the call control system wherein the first update message indicates the status change associated the first network node and the first transport type. The call control system, responsive to receiving the first update message from the gateway, determines a first priority associated with the first update message based on the first transport type.

  • Patent number: 7391737
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring Quality-of-Service (QoS) in packet-based communications networks for Voice-over-IP applications is advantageously based not only on packet loss information but also on particular characteristics of the speech data itself. Measurement of failures of the “quasi-stationary” (QS) property of speech—that is, the assumption that both the pitch and spectral envelop usually vary slowly relative to the packet size—are advantageously used in conjunction with measures of packet loss characteristics (e.g., packet loss rates or burst ratios) to calculate a QoS measure. One specific QS failure measure—referred to herein as QSFE (quasi-stationary failure estimate)—advantageously estimates the phoneme rate and is used in one illustrative method for calculating a QoS measure for Voice-over-IP applications in the presence of packet loss.

  • Patent number: 7385955
Abstract: The present invention provides a communication system, signal pre-processing apparatus and signal receiving apparatus thereof. The signal pre-processing apparatus is used for pre-processing signals before they are transmitted by a plurality of antennas. The apparatus includes a serial-to-parallel converter, L compensation processors and L beam formation processors. First of all, the serial-to-parallel converter converts a digital signal into N divided signals. Each of the compensation processors pre-compensates the N divided signals and outputs a compensated signal. Each of the beam formation processors intensifies the compensated signal and outputs an intensified signal. Each of the antennas combines L intensified signals into a particular signal, and meanwhile, upconverts the particular signal into a RF (radio-frequency) signal for transmission.

  • Patent number: 7382787
Abstract: A method for routing and switching data packets from one or more incoming links to one or more outgoing links of a router. The method comprises receiving a data packet from the incoming link, assigning at least one outgoing link to the data packet based on the destination address of the data packet, and after the assigning operation, storing the data packet in a switching memory based on the assigned outgoing link. The data packet extracted from the switching memory, and transmitted along the assigned outgoing link. The router may include a network processing unit having one or more systolic array pipelines for performing the assigning operation.

  • Patent number: 7369508
Abstract: When uplink signalling radio bearers steal capacity from a user bearer, at least the amount of data waiting for transmission on a TBF established for the user bearer should be informed to the network. This can be done by using separate countdown values for each radio bearer, using a first countdown value for the bearer the TBF was established for and a second countdown value which indicates the total amount of data on stealing bearers, or by calculating a common countdown value indicating the total amount of data on all bearers using the TBF.

  • Patent number: 7349404
Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for connection set-up in a communication system which comprises a plurality of first processing units, e.g. switching units, and a plurality of second processing units, and transmits information as a stream of information cells having cell identification. For reducing the number of messages in setting up connections, the first processing units are connected to the second processing units, and information cells are supplied to several processing units which distinguish between the cells based on the cell identification for further processing. The information is preferably ATM transmitted, and all first processing units are connected to all second processing units using virtual path connections on the ATM layer. The processing unit to which the information cell is directed is identified using virtual channel.

  • Patent number: 7336642
Abstract: A wireless mesh communication protocol that dynamically assigns communication time-slots and frequencies to mesh nodes. A first node is established as a PC that sequentially polls other nodes. A second node responds at a predetermined time with information that includes database records, and then a third node responds similarly. The second node is then established as the PC and the first node is polled during dynamically allocated time-slots and on a frequency that depend on the second node's database records. The third node is then established as a PC and acts similarly. In both cases the first node responds by sending information and data records. The first node is then re-established as the PC. The first node then polls the second and third nodes at times and frequencies that depend on the first node's database records.

  • Patent number: 7324435
Abstract: A receiver for OFDM signals estimates the carrier frequency offset from a training sequence of symbols in the received signal, by minimising a cost function which is designed to exploit statistically the information in the symbols. In a first firm, the cost function includes terms generated from the received signal at pairs of symbols which are not just nearest-neighbours in the symbol sequence. For example, the cost function may include not just terms generated between nearest neighbour symbols, but between all pairs of symbols. In a second form, the cost function includes terms which describe the relationship between the corresponding elements within different symbols. Thus, the invention makes it possible to obtain much more statistics than in conventional methods from the same training sequence. This can increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as compared to prior art systems. Accordingly, a more accurate estimate of carrier frequency offset can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 7315538
Abstract: Methods and systems provide network access service for a subscriber by utilizing multiple asymmetric DSL modems per service point such that the available bandwidth is the aggregation of the multiple asymmetric DSL modems. One asymmetric DSL modem of a service point has a faster upload speed than download speed while another asymmetric DSL modem of the service point has a faster download speed than upload speed. The two asymmetric DSL modems are aggregated together at the service endpoint so that the service endpoint benefits from the upload and download bandwidth available from both asymmetric DSL modems. The two asymmetric DSL modems at one service point communicate with two asymmetric DSL modems aggregated at another service point to complete the exchange of data.
