Patent number: 5961053Abstract: A nozzle for producing an ultrahigh-pressure fluid fan jet is shown and described. In a preferred embodiment, the nozzle has an inner surface defined by a conical bore extending from a first end to a second end, thereby creating an entrance orifice and an exit orifice in the first and second ends, respectively. A wedge-shaped notch extends inward from the second end towards the first end to a sufficient depth such that the shape of the exit orifice is defined by the intersection of the conical bore and the wedge-shaped notch. As pressurized fluid passes through the nozzle and out the exit orifice, the shape of the exit orifice causes the pressurized fluid to exit in the form of a fan jet having a substantially oval cross-section. This fan jet may be swept across a surface to be cleaned thereby selectively removing a layer of material from an underlying surface evenly and completely, without damaging the underlying surface. The fan jet may also be used to cut a fibrous or hard material.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1996Date of Patent: October 5, 1999Assignee: Flow International CorporationInventors: Chidambaram Raghavan, Edmund Y. Patent number: 5957382Abstract: A fog generator comprising a pump which delivers under hitch pressure a volatilizable chemical into a centrifuge-heater component which centrifuges and heats the chemical efficiently. The centrifuge forces heavier particles of the volatilizable chemical against highly heated areas of the centrifuge member to provide added pressure to the volatilizable chemical passing through the centrifuge resulting in increased production of ultra-fine fog. One embodiment describes a fog generator which includes an ice chamber through which some of the volatilized chemical may be directed to cool the volatilized chemical passing through ice particles therein and make more effective the production of low-lying fog. To make the use of the ice chamber even more efficient, the ice chamber includes means for efficient removal of water which has accumulated from melted ice.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Inventor: Clarence O. Patent number: 5957413Abstract: The present invention involves a system for altering the aerodynamic shape and/or fluid flow field about a solid body. The preferred embodiment comprises a synthetic jet actuator embedded in a solid body, with the jet orifice built into the body surface. The synthetic jet actuator generates a series of fluid vortices emanating from the orifice so as to entrain fluid external to the actuator chamber and form a synthetic jet stream. A recirculating flow region is formed along the solid body surface about the synthetic jet orifice. As a result the apparent aerodynamic shape of the body is altered. Consequently, if the solid body is placed in a fluid flow field, the entire fluid flow field is altered by the operation of the synthetic jet actuator.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Georgia Tech Research CorporationInventors: Ari Glezer, Barton L. Patent number: 5957379Abstract: A device is mounted between an inlet pipe and a shower head and includes a receptacle for mixing a stream of water with additives. A portion of the stream of water passing from the inlet pipe to the shower head is diverted into the receptacle. The receptacle includes replaceable containers, a first container containing a first additive and a second container containing a second additive. The diverted stream of water mixes with the first additive and the second additive upon contact with the first and second containers. The diverted stream containing additives is then returned to the main stream of water which exits the shower head. The flow of the diverted water to and from the receptacle is controlled by a valve. The present invention provides an improvement over known arrangements by providing additives which are kept separate from one another preventing a chemical reaction between the additives which would cause a loss of potency.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Inventors: Frank McMorrow, Donald E. Patent number: 5957390Abstract: An injection valve can compensate for the reduction in through-flow experienced with known valves operating at higher temperatures. By forming the valve needle and valve seat carrier from different materials and more particularly by using a material with a very low coefficient of thermal expansion for the valve needle, the valve needle expands less in comparison with the valve seat carrier when there is an increase in temperature. Thus, an increase in travel occurs and a reduction in the metered quantity of fuel due to the formation of gas bubbles is avoided. The injection valve is particularly suitable for use in fuel injection systems of mixture-compressing, spark-ignition internal combustion engines.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1998Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventor: Peter Romann
