Abstract: Detecting a linear impairment in a cable under test by using a random signal transmitted down the cable. The impairment causes a reflected signal to be combined with the random signal. The combined signal extends over a plurality of sub-bands. A method and apparatus perform the steps of: (a) receiving the combined signal from a test point upstream from the impairment; (b) tuning to each sub-band and receiving a part of the combined signal within each sub-band; (c) determining an autocorrelation function of each part of the combined signal of each sub-band, to produce a plurality of autocorrelation functions; (d) combining the autocorrelation functions to form a combined function; (e) detecting the reflected signal from the combined function; and (f) determining, from the combined function, a time delay associated with the reflected signal and the distance from the test point to the impairment.

Abstract: The invention notably relates to the linear distribution of video programs, or segment(s) thereof, to end user devices. Video programs, or segment(s) thereof, received from one or more content source, are encoded and encapsulated into IP video streams. The streams are transmitted to a satellite operator network operation center (NOC), which encrypts the streams. The encrypted streams are transmitted, as multicast video streams, through a satellite, to one or more cable television headend, and then, over an IP-based network, to cable modems located within subscriber premises. An IP-enabled end user device transmits, to a gateway associated with one of the cable modems, a command requesting that the IP-enabled end user device obtain a requested video stream as a unicast stream. Upon receiving the command, the gateway triggers the conversion, at the gateway, of the requested video stream from multicast to unicast for transmission over a home network provided within the subscriber premises.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing users with a real time or near-real time indications of media channels or programs that are currently receiving the most usage or consumption within a defined population of users are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method receives media usage data for currently airing media while the media is being aired and creates an ordered list of media channels or programs for presentation, based at least in part on the media usage data. The method then presents the ordered list of media channels or programs while the media is being aired. In an embodiment, a system further provides the ability to easily select and tune one of the indicated channels or programs in an interactive interface. In an embodiment, the selected media channels or programs are sold on demand or as part of a service upgrade if they are not included in a user's current subscription.

In one example, a method comprises receiving a device command and determining an intent of the device command. The intent includes an action and an external device to perform the action. The method further comprises selecting a selected protocol for communicating the device command to the external device, where the selected protocol is selected from a plurality of supported protocols, and communicating the device command to the external device according to the selected protocol.

Abstract: Methods and systems are described herein for the generation of customized collages of media assets that allow a user to quickly and efficiently review numerous media assets related to user selected criteria. For example, in response to a user requesting a search of “Johnny Appleseed,” a media guidance application may retrieve a plurality of media assets from various sources (e.g., television shows, newspaper articles, radio broadcasts, Internet websites, etc.) related to Johnny Appleseed and display the plurality of media assets simultaneously.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a system for determining a tag based on an interaction of a mobile device with a media processor. The tag is associated with a number of options of video content received at the media processor. A request is determined from the media processor for the number of options of video content associated with the tag. A transfer of the plurality of options of video content is initiated from a video source to the media processor. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A computer implemented advertisement method for matching a user with a computer generated advertisement that is compatible to a users of the methods preferred aesthetic. In one example the method comprises: receiving a profile generated by recording user choices from a field of images displayed to the user; applying a logistics regression model to the image choices to create a baseline aesthetic template used to determine the most appropriate model or actor to be inserted into the background of a still or video advertisement. Any results within a desired confidence level are returned to the user as and advertisement with the appropriate model or actor inserted by means of current and available technology into the ad to be displayed on the user's mobile or video device.

Abstract: A method for subscribing users to a video monitoring service and video broadcast service are disclosed. Viewers can login to a secure website run by a server in the cloud to remotely view streamed video images from one or more portable video monitoring devices. The viewers and subscribers to the service have many options to select the monitoring devices and to process and customized viewed images according to their needs. A server based system implements the method, and can include a cloud server.

Abstract: In an exemplary method, a media service personalization system determines a first frequency response pattern based on frequency responses to a plurality of alternating current signal frequencies output to at least one external electrode of a remote control device, correlates the first frequency response pattern to a first personalized mode of operation, and directs a media service access device to operate in accordance with the first personalized mode of operation. In certain examples, the media service personalization system directs a frequency response determination facility of the remote control device to output the plurality of alternating current signal frequencies to the at least one external electrode of the remote control device and measure the frequency responses to the plurality of alternating current signal frequencies.

Abstract: A system and method for providing a personal broadcasting service using a mobile communication terminal with a multimedia broadcasting module are provided. A broadcasting service provider provides multimedia broadcasting content. A multimedia broadcasting terminal sends a channel selection signal to the broadcasting service provider, receives multimedia broadcasting content of a selected channel, and opens personal broadcasting. A normal terminal sends a multimedia broadcasting content request to the multimedia broadcasting terminal opening the personal broadcasting, and receives the multimedia broadcasting content from the multimedia broadcasting terminal opening the personal broadcasting.

Abstract: A method and system for filtering content streamed over HLS and other streaming technologies are disclosed. A Streaming Filtering Solution may generate a content map for a movie or other content, identifying filterable elements associated with vulgarity, sex/nudity, violence, etc. A filterable element may identify a category and subcategory of content (e.g., “vulgarity”: “f---” word), a begin time and end time, and other characteristics. The Streaming Filtering Solution may generate media segment files based on the filterable elements. The Streaming Filtering Solution may obtain a filter with categories and sub-categories of content to exclude or retain when the content is played. When content is requested, the Streaming Filtering Solution may apply the filter to the media segment files to determine that some media segment files should be dynamically generated based on the filter.

Abstract: A virtual channel table for broadcasting protocol and a method for broadcasting by using the virtual channel table includes identification information identifying and permitting discrimination of active and inactive channels contained in the virtual channel table. At a receiver, the virtual channel table transmitted from the transmitting side is parsed, thereby determining whether the current received channel is an active or inactive channel.

Abstract: A network system provides delivery of customized target content, such as advertising, to individual users. There is transmission of a common spot content stream to a large group of the users. Each home client user communicates through a telecommunications network, such as the Internet, for connection to a portal to receive continuing media, such as streaming audio or video. The user installs receiver software at his home client processor for receiving both the streaming media and a content stream. The media stream includes spot markers placed at appropriate locations in the media stream by the publisher to designate locations for insertion of spot content and optionally to identify specific characteristics of the media stream. The content stream includes content units, such as audio advertising, together with spot content frames, which include parameters having values designated by the spot content provider to be the target audience.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system, method and computer program for enabling a user (an auditor or a viewer) to access complementary information related to one or a plurality of sequences or topics of interest in a recorded program previously broadcast on the radio or television and played back on a device, such as an audio or video tape or disk recorder/player. The preferred embodiment of the invention relates to a system and method for enabling a person listening to or watching a recorded program, to select one or a plurality of topics drawing his or her attention and for immediately receiving further information related to these topics from the World Wide Web. The system is based on the synchronization of local times of transmitters and recorders. The flow of information transmitted, received and recorded is always synchronized, independently of the relative positions of recorders and transmitters.
