  • Patent number: 6078693
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reproducing data compressed in accordance with a motion picture experts group (MPEG) standard and recorded on a recording medium. The data represents a plurality of frames which correspond to a plurality of groups of pictures (GOPs), in which each of the GOPs includes different types of pictures including intraframe predictively (I) encoded and interframe predictively (P) encoded pictures. The compressed data is read from the recording medium, and the type of pictures corresponding to the read data is determined. The read image data is decoded and supplied to a display device. When special processing (such as, random accessing) is performed, image data may not be properly decoded during an initial period. During this time period, an auxiliary signal may be supplied to the display device.

  • Patent number: 6075888
Abstract: A system that allows a user to tune a designated a color profile for a specific color input or output device thereby creating a device specific profile from a profile for a similar device or from a generic device profile. The color values associated with the device, either patches input to a scanner or patches output by a display or a printer, are measured using a colorimetric color measuring device. These measured values are used to adjust or tune the profile to produce a more accurate profile for the particular device. The adjustment includes curve fitting the measured color values and simulated color values to create a mapping from the measured values to the simulated values. The curve is used to adjust the profile. To account for gamut shifts the color values can be mapped into the gamut of the device during tuning curve creation.

  • Patent number: 6072912
Abstract: An image scanner produces white level data when the white plate is irradiated with light. The image scanner produces black level data when the white plate is irradiated with no light. Correction data constructed from the thus produced white level data and black level data is transferred to the host computer. Next, the image scanner produces tone data for the original, and transfers the tone data to the host computer. In the host computer, the tone data is corrected into either one of the 256 levels "00" to "FF." This correction operation is attained with using average values of the transferred white level data and average values of the transferred black level data.

  • Patent number: 6069983
Abstract: It is determined whether the long sides of a document are parallel to the main or sub scanning direction of a scanner to set resolutions of image data along the short and long sides of the document while the image data is being facsimiled. When the long sides of the document is parallel to the main scanning direction, the scanner scans the document in the main scanning direction by the resolution along the long sides and in the sub scanning direction by the resolution along the short sides to read the image data. The image data is rotated 90 degrees, and the rotated image data is facsimiled in the A4-R direction based on the ITU's recommendation. The image data is not degraded when it is rotated but can be transmitted in good quality.

  • Patent number: 6064779
Abstract: A document transport for a scanner (100) has a flexible, elongated finger (226) disposed adjacent to a document (134), and a force applied to the finger (226) urges teeth (233) on the finger (226) into contact with the document (134) which urges the document (134) along a path through the scanner (100). A piezoelectric plate (222), which applies the force to the finger (226), requires only a small amount of electrical power. To traverse the scanner (100), a document (134) may also be manually fed along a guide (272). First and second speed-sensing detectors (276a and 276b), disposed along the path traversed by the document (134), permit the scanner (100) to determine a speed at which the manually fed document (134) traverses the scanner (100). To conserve electrical energy, the scanner (100) also includes a document-presence detector (274) for activating the scanner (100) when a document (134) to be scanned is present.

  • Patent number: 6061144
Abstract: A color copying apparatus includes a function for correcting image density when an image development system is deteriorated after a relatively long time of usage. A reference image including a number of color gray scales is stored in a memory, and is recorded on a recording medium. Each color gray scale corresponds to each of a yellow, a magenta, a cyan, and a black color for a letter image and each of a yellow, a magenta, a cyan, and a black color for a halftone image. When the image development system is deteriorated, the reference image recorded on the recording medium represents image density which is different from the reference image stored in the memory. This difference is detected by comparing the image density of two reference images, one stored in the memory and the other recorded on the recording medium.

  • Patent number: 6058224
Abstract: In a manual scanning type image input apparatus and an image signal processing method, unevenness of scanning is hard to occur due to the simple constitution. A line image sensor reads an image data of prescribed manuscript while implementing electrical main scanning with predetermined driving cycle, before a movement distance encoder detects movement distance in the direction of mechanical auxiliary scanning. A line image data which is read by the line image sensor is distributed to either one of two systems to be stored temporarily in the line memory of the two systems. The line image data which is stored temporarily is read out selectively by a data selector, before being constructed as an image data based on an address of the selected line image data by decoder.

  • Patent number: 6058220
Abstract: A device for scanning an X-ray image where a previously locally uniformly charged photoconductor (1) is discharged in dependence on the local intensity, utilizing several electrometer probes which are arranged in a row and which line-wise scan the charge pattern of the photoconductor (1) which is successively displaced in the scanning direction, extending perpendicular to the line direction, the probes supplying, for each pixel, an image value which corresponds to a discharge at the relevant pixel. In order to eliminate streaky artefacts, the image values are applied to an analog-to-digital converter (5), the converted values being stored in an image memory (6), there being provided a signal processor (7) which subjects the image values of neighboring pixels in an image line to a low-pass filter function and which subjects the image values of pixels neighboring one another in the scanning direction to a high-pass filter function.

  • Patent number: 6057931
Abstract: The present invention provides a color-control method for use in an image reproducing process where the image is reduced to a plurality of pixels, with each pixel having a color value. The color control method uses a color control program in the image reproduction process. The color control program includes a color correction module and a color separation module. The color correction program provides a method for using HSL values to select which pixels will be color corrected. The color-separation program is used to convert RGB color values to YMCK color values and provides for undercolor removal and black generation. Undercolor removal removes gray components from the hue pixel data and replaces it with black pixel data. The black generation routine provides for the selection of pixels for which black will be added by the input of selected parameter of an HSL slice range.

  • Patent number: 6049398
Abstract: The facsimile machine connected with a personal computer such that it can send image data to the personal computer. The facsimile machine first requests the personal computer to supply data about communication capability of the personal computer such as resolution mode (scanning line density) and coding method to the personal computer. Upon this request, the personal computer outputs necessary data to the facsimile machine. If a user of the facsimile machine sets to scan the image at a resolution finer than a resolution of the personal computer, then resolution is automatically changed to a rougher resolution to conform with the personal computer. The facsimile machine then scans the image at the modified resolution. The scanned image is coded by the same coding method as the personal computer. The image scanned and coded in line with the communication capability of the personal computer is then stored in a memory and transmitted to the personal computer from the memory.

  • Patent number: 6044180
Abstract: A scanner system digitizes 35 mm transparencies or negatives, and converts the image to a format compatible with popular microcomputer systems. This scanner system can accommodate various formats, and has variable zoom, pan and window size. Color separation is accomplished by an illumination arrangement causing rapid sequential generation of red, green and blue components. A low wattage light source is used, and color balance is achieved by adjusting the respective exposure times of the three primary colors. The system has internal calibration to achieve repeatable color balance. The system implements a wide variety of color coding schemes ranging in resolution from 1 to 24 bits. An adaptive process compresses the data in order to optimize the color selection process. The illumination optics are anamorphotic for high efficiency. Mechanical and electrical interfaces are compatible with a conventional 51/4" floppy disk drive standard.
