  • Patent number: 8107184
Abstract: For an apparatus determining whether or not an HDD is started by barometric pressure information or the like, there are provided a navigation apparatus, an operation control device, an operation control method, and an operation control program, that enable shortening of a time from a power-on to starting-up of the HDD. The present application is the operation control device which controls the operation of the HDD by giving an instruction to the HDD to control the operation of the HDD, the operation control device including: a recording means for recording a previous closing information indicative of whether or not the operation of the operation control device normally ends by a previous power-off and an operation control means for giving an instruction of starting the operation to the HDD in a case where the operation has been normally ended at a time of starting the operation control device by the power-on.

  • Patent number: 7952828
Abstract: A hard disk drive which includes a voice coil motor driving portion which supplies drive current to a voice coil motor, and a controller which compares a supply voltage supplied to predetermined chips installed on a printed circuit board with a parking reference voltage previously set to a voltage higher than a power-on-reset voltage and controls the voice coil motor driving portion to apply current to a voice coil of the voice coil motor through the voice coil motor driving portion to park a magnetic head in a predetermined parking zone, when the supply voltage is lower than the parking reference voltage.

  • Patent number: 7848047
Abstract: A patterned-media magnetic recording disk drive compensates for circumferential misalignment of data island patterns among the data tracks as a result of errors in fabrication of the master template used to make the disks. Each data track on the disk has its pattern shifted from a generally radial or arcuate line by a certain amount of pattern circumferential misalignment (PCM). The disk drive includes a write clock where writing to the data islands is controlled by detection of synchronization marks by the read head, and circuitry to adjust the phase of the write clock to compensate for PCM. The phase difference between the data pattern of the selected data track where data is to be written and the data pattern of the track where the synchronization marks are being detected is the difference in their respective PCM values.

  • Patent number: 7133240
Abstract: A two-step self-servowriting process first writes an intermediate pattern based on a reference pattern, and then writes a final pattern based on the intermediate pattern, wherein the reference pattern can be a printed media or a spiral pattern. Such an approach can be utilized to reduce the noise/runout, eliminate timing eccentricity, and increase the sample rate of the final pattern. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.

  • Patent number: 4413297
Abstract: A magnetic recording and playback apparatus of perpendicular recording type comprises a main pole having a magnetic axis which is normal to a recording surface of a magnetic record medium, an auxiliary magnetic pole disposed in surrounding relationship with the main pole with a small clearance from the lateral side thereof, a coil disposed on part of the auxiliary pole, and a yoke having its one end connected to the auxiliary pole and having its other end of a relatively large area disposed in opposite relationship with the recording surface of the record medium. The free end of the main pole is disposed in contact with the surface of the record medium while the yoke is disposed at a given distance from the surface of the record medium. During a recording operation, a current is passed through the coil in accordance with information to be recorded.

  • Patent number: 4412260
Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed for receiving a disk cartridge and guiding the cartridge to an operating position within a disk drive, and for subsequently ejecting the cartridge when its use is complete, all responsive to the opening and closing of the disk drive door. The mechanism for ejecting the cartridge also automatically opens a transducer head access door when the cartridge is inserted into the receiver, and automatically closes the door upon cartridge ejection. Improvements are also disclosed in the manner of mounting a lift collar designed to support the disk and hub within a cartridge, and for an improved method of adjusting the cartridge to operate alternatively in write protect and write enable modes.
