  • Patent number: 4134312
Abstract: When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed, shifting points at which the automatic power transmission shifts to another gear ratio are suddenly moved toward the higher vehicle speed to readily achieve the downshift of the transmission even during a relatively high vehicle speed. The downshifts are continued until the magnitude of the throttle pressure which is substantially proportional to the output of the engine is decreased to a predetermined level even when the accelerator pedal is permitted to return to its partially depressed position.

  • Patent number: 4134310
Abstract: This transmission has a first planetary gear assembly having first input means connected to an input shaft, first output means, and first reaction means, and a second planetary gear assembly having second input means connected to the first input means, second output means, and second reaction means connected directly to the first reaction means by a reaction shaft. First clutch means, when engaged, connect the first output means to an output shaft in a high driving range. A hydrodynamic drive is used; for example, a torque converter, which may or may not have a stationary case, has a pump connected to the second output means, a stator grounded by an overrunning clutch to the case, and a turbine connected to an output member, and may be used in a starting phase. Alternatively, a fluid coupling or other type of hydrodynamic drive may be used. Second clutch means, when engaged, for connecting the output member to the output shaft in a low driving range.

  • Patent number: 4131036
Abstract: A control system to change gear ratio in an automatic transmission through friction elements engaged by hydraulic pressure. A closed loop electrical circuit is completed between a transducer, which provides an electrical signal related to the output torque of the transmission, and a pair of control valves, to vary the pressure applied to a friction element by each control valve. A circuit for computing reaction torque is coupled between the transducer and a logic control circuit, which provides logic command signals for controlling operation of components in the closed loop circuit. The system computes an output torque ramp when a downshift is called for by the shift point computer and uses controllers which react oppositely to control engagement of a clutch and brake in response to error signals of torque output compared to a desired ramp to produce a proper shift.

  • Patent number: 4126061
Abstract: A signal failure circuit for incorporation in a control circuit of vehicle automatic transmission system of the type having a generator which produces a fluctuating signal, comprises an interval timer including a comparator and a capacitor, the latter being charged by means of a charging circuit and discharged by means of a transistor which is rendered conductive by pulses of a pulse train derived from said fluctuating signal. When said pulses cease the comparator provides an output to a monostable circuit which thereby switches to its unstable state to activate safety circuits associated with the transmission system. The monostable circuit will remain in its unstable state for a predetermined time after the return of the pulses of the pulse train. The charging circuit of the capacitor is conveniently controlled by a further transistor the conduction of which is dependent upon the output voltage of an a.c.-d.c. converter which also receives said train of pulses.

  • Patent number: 4125038
Abstract: Improvement in a hydraulic type automatic transmission including a fluid torque converter and a plurality of friction-engagement devices associated with hydraulic servo devices in which different speed change ratios including a plurality of forward movement steps can be realized by selectively actuating the friction-engagement devices with a hydraulic pressure either automatically or manually. Upon deceleration from a higher speed gear ratio to a predetermined gear ratio, a friction-engagement device for realizing the predetermined gear ratio is quickly engaged without delay, whereas upon acceleration from a lower speed gear ratio or a neutral condition to the predetermined gear ratio, engagement of the friction engagement device is effected slowly by actuating an accumulator and a flow rate limiter and thereby generation of an excessive shock is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4121480
Abstract: An opposed piston engine includes pistons mounted at opposite ends of a piston rod which is pivotally coupled to one end of a rocker arm coupling the piston rod to a connecting rod in turn coupled to an eccentric drive mechanism. The rocker arm is pivotally coupled to the engine block by pivot means permitting necessary lineal movement of the rocker arm during operation. Counterbalance arms are pivotally coupled to the engine block at one end and include weighted portions positioned to provide counterbalancing for the opposed pistons. Pivot means couple the rocker arm and the counterbalance arms for providing the desired relative motion between these elements. A hollow drive shaft is coupled to the eccentric drive mechanism and a transmission shaft extends through the drive shaft to permit positioning of a clutch at one end of the engine and the transmission at the other.
