    Abstract: An article and method for producing extremely small pore inorganic membranes. The method enables reduction of the pore size of a porous inorganic membrane, such as metal oxides, metal carbides, metal nitrides and cermets. Mean pore diameters of below about 10 Å. Can readily and efficiently be achieved. After the conventional formation of an inorganic membrane, the pore size of the membrane is progressively reduced in a controlled manner to deposit one or more layers of an inorganic compound on the pore walls. This is done by exposing the membrane to the vapor of an inorganic precursor compound. The compound reacts with hydroxyl groups and or absorbed water molecules on the surface of the membrane and is thus bonded to the surface. Water vapor, oxygen, or vapors containing one or more oxygen ligands such as an alcohol are used to hydrolyze the deposited material to the inorganic membrane.

    Abstract: A pore plugging material, for pH dependent membrane diffusion, in which cyclic olefins having phosphazene-functional moieties provide predictable erosion properties when used to plug pores in separation barriers and other porous membranes. Specific properties of the polymers are dependent on several factors, including molecular weight and identity of side groups attached to the phosphazene moiety. However, as a class, phosphazene-functional cyclic olefins provide both predictable erodibility and uniformly benign hydrolysis products and are, therefore, uniquely suitable as pore plugging polymers for separation barriers and membranes of all kinds. The invention, therefore, embraces the provision of a pH-sensitive erodible pore plugging material for pores in separation barriers and membranes of all kinds.

    Abstract: A non-woven synthetic sheet material for use in sound insulation and/or thermal insulation is described. The sheet material is a felt or mat of substantially uniform synthetic fiber thickness and defines opposed flat surfaces. The sheet material is needle-punched from at least one of the opposed flat surfaces thereof to cause the synthetic fibers to intertwine to form a pliable sound and/or thermal insulating sheet. The insulating sheet has a density in the range of from about 100 to 1500 g/m2 and a homogeneous integrity resistant to fragmentation. Preferably a polymeric film is interconnected to a surface of the synthetic fiber sheet by a further needle punch step the polymeric film is preferably a metalized polyethylene film. The material has a multitude of uses in the construction industry. The felt may also be provided in strip form for use in the framing of wooden structures to sound insulate interconnected parts.
