  • Patent number: 4559977
Abstract: A ring encircles produce placed on a work table. Tie ribbon is fed by pressure rollers around the inner periphery of the ring to form a complete loop. A first gripper clamps and retains the free end of the ribbon against a second gripper. The pressure rollers operate in reverse retracting excess ribbon about the produce. A friction clutch, operative only for reverse ribbon feeding, allows for ribbon slippage as the ribbon tightens around the produce. Then the second gripper clamps the other end of the ribbon against a twister head and a twister mechanism rotates the clamped ends of the ribbon about a common axis twisting the ribbon ends together. Shearing edges sever the engaged ribbon from a ribbon supply during twisting. The grippers and twister mechanism are at ends of concentric support rods and tubes, and the grippers in clamping move along the rotational axis of the twister mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4555928
Abstract: A press for assembling a fastener or the like to a plate or the like comprises a frame and an anvil assembly carried by the frame. A linkage mechanism assembly is carried by the frame and includes two links. A ram assembly is operatively connectable to one of the two links. A first fluid operated cylinder and piston assembly holds the ram assembly in a raised position. A first switch terminates the flow of fluid to the first cylinder, thereby permitting the ram assembly to drop. A second fluid switch is activated after a sufficient drop of said piston to energize a second fluid operated cylinder and piston assembly for extending and retracting said links, and thereby move one of said links into force transmitting relationship with said ram assembly, to thereby cause said ram assembly to move forcefully down toward the fastener for the purpose of installing the fastener into the plate.

  • Patent number: 4553572
Abstract: A machine for connecting successive rows of coil springs together into a coil spring assembly. The machine, in preferred form, initially picks up a row of coil springs by inserting a pick up finger into the barrel of each coil and moving the springs onto a support platen. In the course of transporting the coils between pick up and the support platen, the pick up fingers change the spacing of the coils. The springs are then compressed against the support platen to a desired height through use of a reciprocable compression bar. Thereafter, and through use of rotatable transfer fingers on a transfer shaft, the springs are removed from under the compression bar, and are moved into clamping dies. Leading rotary transfer fingers on the transfer shaft first pull the row of springs out from under the compression bar, and trailing rotary fingers then push the springs into the downstream one of upper and lower clamping dies.

  • Patent number: 4553420
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for bending one or two complete rows of leads on a dual-in-line semiconductor package at one time without damaging the leads. The leads of the dual-in-line package are initially in their manufactured position, extending horizontally from the sides of the package and generally parallel to the top and bottom surface thereof. A support anvil is placed under the portion of the lead which is sealed in the semiconductor package, and a punch or bending member is disposed immediately adjacent the outside edge of the handle for performing the actual bending. A sheet of relatively thin metal is formed into a U-shaped channel and the bending member inserted therein before lowering so that as the bending member is lowered, no portion thereof touches the surface of the leads being bent. The sheet of thin metal buffers the bending operation and is interposed between the bottom and side of the bending member and the face of the leads for preventing scratching or damage thereto.

  • Patent number: 4550586
Abstract: The device employs a number of detectors (1) mounted at the level of the upper surface of the die (2) and a numerical control system (5). The purpose of the detectors is to signal to the numerical control the moment that the part b of the sheet begins to rise. The device allows the automatic determination of the thickness of the sheet in the area where the bend is to be located, during the course of the forming operation. The thickness of the sheet is then used by a numerical control system to correct the travel of the tool, without interrupting the forming cycle, in such a way as to obtain with high precision the required bend angle.
