Abstract: An apparatus for providing on-chip voltage-regulated power includes a switched capacitor voltage conversion circuit that receives an elevated power demand signal and operates at a base rate when the elevated power demand signal is not active and at an elevated rate when the elevated power demand signal is active. The switched capacitor voltage conversion circuit comprises an auxiliary set of transistors that are disabled, when the elevated power demand signal is not active and enabled, when the elevated power demand signal is active. The apparatus may also include a droop detection circuit that monitors a monitored power signal and activates the elevated power demand signal in response to the monitored power signal dropping below a selected voltage level. The monitored power signal may be a voltage input provided by an input power supply for the switched capacitor voltage conversion circuit. A corresponding method is also disclosed herein.

  • Patent number: 9851119
Abstract: A method for HVAC workload and cost logic is described. In one embodiment, the method includes detecting a thermostat of an HVAC system being set to a target temperature and upon detecting the thermostat being set to the target temperature, detecting a current indoor condition and a current outdoor condition. In some embodiments, the method includes calculating an estimated runtime of an HVAC heating or cooling cycle for the target temperature. The estimated runtime is based on the target temperature, the current indoor and outdoor conditions, and on a result of querying a correlation database. The correlation database includes data points for a plurality of previous HVAC heating and cooling cycles.

  • Patent number: 9785209
Abstract: Thermal management in a portable computing device differentiates between a temperature increase caused by a steady workload and a temperature increase caused by an instantaneous workload. If it is determined that a detected temperature increase is caused by a steady workload, then a configuration of thermal parameters is applied that optimizes thermal performance for a steady workload. If it is determined that a temperature increase is caused by an instantaneous workload increase, then a configuration of thermal parameters is applied that optimizes thermal performance for an instantaneous workload.

  • Patent number: 9748787
Abstract: A portable information handling system manages battery charge to maintain a minimum level that supports boot by disconnecting the battery from a battery discharge path so that battery charge is lost substantially only to self-discharge. The battery automatically reconnects to the battery discharge path if external power becomes available to charge the battery. The minimum battery charge level provides adequate power in combination with the external power to support boot of the portable information handling system to an operational state. A power manager monitors power transition events to track power consumption information that a battery charge manager applies to modify the power transition events if external power and available battery charge are not sufficient to perform the power transition event without modification.

  • Patent number: 9720488
Abstract: An apparatus and method is described herein for providing an early wake scheme before spawning a new thread. An early wake indication may be provided an amount of time, which may include an amount of time to perform a demotion from a current power state to a lower power state that is closer to an active power state, before a new thread is to be spawned and executed on a processing element (e.g., core or thread). Upon encountering the spawn of the new thread, such as a helper thread, the processing element may further transition from the lower power state to an active power state. The new thread may be executed on the processing element without incurring the latency associated with execution of the new thread waiting for the demotion from the current power state to an active power state after the spawn of the new thread.

  • Patent number: 9690352
Abstract: A portable electronic device includes a power management unit, a sense module, a receiver module and an application processor. The sense module powered by a first operating voltage from the power management unit provides a first control signal in response to a sense event when the portable electronic device is in a sleep mode. The receiver module is powered by a second operating voltage from the power management unit in response to the first control signal. When the receiver module is powered by the second operating voltage, the receiver module obtains and recognizes an input event and provides a second control signal when the input event is recognized. The application processor is powered by a third operating voltage from the power management unit in response to the second control signal.

  • Patent number: 9684364
Abstract: Technologies for data center power management include a number of computing nodes in communication over a network. Each computing node establishes a firmware environment that monitors power consumption of the computing node and if the power consumption exceeds an optimal level broadcasts a request to offload tasks to the other nodes. The firmware environment of a receiving computing node traps the request and determines power requirements and/or compute requirements for the tasks based on the request. The firmware environment determines whether to accept the offloaded task based on the requirements and available resources of the computing node. If accepted, the requesting computing node offloads one or more tasks to the receiving nodes. The firmware environment may be established by a manageability engine of the computing node. Power consumption may be monitored on a per-component basis. Compute requirements may include processor requirements or other requirements. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
