Abstract: Water-soluble, high molecular weight, linear copolymers of a diallyl ammonium monomer and an acrylamide monomer are prepared by emulsion copolymerization of a major portion of the acrylamide monomer via stage-addition, and the addition of a chain transfer agent at the conclusion of said copolymerization to prevent branching and cross-linking.
Abstract: Poly(1-hydro-1-R-1-sila-cis-pent-3-ene) and poly(1-hydro-1-R-3,4 benzo-1-sila pent-3-ene) polymers having repeating units of the general formula ##STR1## where R is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing from one to four carbon atoms or phenyl, R.sup.1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing from one to four carbon atoms, phenyl or a halogen and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are combined to form a phenyl ring, are prepared by the anionic ring opening polymerization of silacyclopent-3-enes or 2-silaindans with an organometallic base and cation coordinating ligand catalyst system.
Abstract: A polyfunctional polymerization initiator suitable to cationic ring-opening polymerization of heterocyclic monomers, having at least one carbon atom bonded directly to a carbon-carbon double bond in a linear or cyclic organic group and, further, having at least two following groups containing the above said carbon atoms and represented by the general formula:--CH.sub.2 Xwhere X represents an electron attracting group such as I, Br, Cl, F, --OSO.sub.2 R, --SOR, --OCOR, --OPO(OR).sub.2 and --OP(OR)R and R is optionally selected from (substituted) alkyl groups or (substituted) aryl groups.Various types of telechelic polymer, block copolymer, comb-like polymer and star-like polymer having controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution can be produced efficiently from the heterocyclic monomer as the starting material.
Abstract: Novel silicone acrylate polymers and a method for their preparation is disclosed. These polymers are formed from silicone acrylates, silicone diacrylates, or mixtures with organic acrylates. The copolymer formed from the reaction mixture of silicone acrylates and organic acrylates is useful in enhancing glass reinforced polyesters.

Abstract: Disclosed is a linear acrylonitrile polymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of at least 50,000, which has a stereoregularity such that the polymer satisfies requirements of I>0.4 and (I+3S)>0.95, wherein I represents the fraction of the isotactic triad and S represents the fraction of the syndiotactic triad. A shaped article is made from a composition comprised of the linear acrylonitrile polymer and a solvent or plasticizer which is selected from a protonic acid and an aqueous solution thereof, an aqueous inorganic salt solution, and a mixture of an organic solvent and an inorganic salt. The fiber made therefrom has an enhanced drawability.
Abstract: Novel conjugated stilbenylene polymers are disclosed having non-linear optical properties, and which can be converted to electrically conductive polymers. Such polymers are produced by reacting a novel bis-cycloalkylene sulfonium salt of 2,5-dimethyl stilbene, e.g. 2,5-(4' -methoxy)-stilbene dimethylene bis-(tetramethylene sulfonium bromide), with alkali metal hydroxide to form a cycloalkylene sulfonium salt precursor polymer, and then heating the precursor polymer under conditions to produce the stilbenylene vinylene polymer, e.g. poly(2,5-(4'-methoxy)stilbenylene vinylene).
Abstract: Compounds containing at least one alkenyl group, at least one maleimide group and at least one rodlike mesogenic moiety are prepared by reacting one or more aminophenols containing one or more rodlike mesogenic moieties with a stoichiometric quantity of a maleic anhydride per amine group of said aminophenol and then alkenylating the resulting phenolic functional maleimide.
Abstract: Polymaleic anhydride having a weight average molecular weight by gel permeation chromatography of between 450 and 800 and a polydispersivity of between 1.0 and 1.15 is produced by polymerizing maleic anhydride, using a peroxide initiator in an amount not greater than 10% by weight of the anhydride, in a dilute solution in o-xylene or a substituted o-xylene.

Abstract: An improved process for producing a vinyl or vinylidene polymer comprising polymerizing a monomer having a vinyl or vinylidene group in the presence of(a) a radical polymerization initiator,(b) an organic phosphorous compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen atom, chlorine atom, bromine atom, an alkyl, an aralkyl, or an aryl,(c) an amine hydrohalide or a quaternary ammonium halide, and(d) a copper-containing compound, which can be carried out rapidly and can give the vinyl or vinylidene polymer having excellent mechanical strength without coloring.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of polymers which comprises dissolving an emulsifier in a solvent, followed by heating the mixture formed; adding to the mixture an alkali persulfate initiator dissolved in a solvent; subsequently adding monomer thereto, which monomer is not miscible with said solvent, and wherein the monomer is added after a period of time of from about 1 second to about 60 minutes has elapsed after the addition of said dissolved initiator; and thereafter effecting polymerization.

Abstract: A water soluble, substantially linear, polymer is made by copolymerization of a water soluble blend of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising carboxylic acid monomers such as acrylic acid and a hydroxylic monomer of the formula CHR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.2 --Y--M.sub.a --H where R.sup.1 is hydrogen or carboxy, R.sup.2 is hydrogen, carboxy or methyl, Y is O, CH.sub.2 O or COO, M is alkyleneoxy and a is at least 5. This polymer can be cross linked, generally after being shaped by extrusion or other shaping of an aqueous solution of the polymer, to form cross linkages between the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The shaped elements can have water absorbency and can be in the form of, for instance, fibers or films.
