  • Patent number: 6435047
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a shoe including cutting a columnar raw material to a given length to provide a disc-shaped raw material, forming on one end face of the disc-shaped raw material a spherical sliding surface which is to be disposed in sliding contact with a spherical surface on a piston, and forming a thermal sprayed layer on the other end face of the disc-shaped raw material. The thermal sprayed layer serves as a flat plate-shaped sliding surface which is to be disposed in sliding contact with a swash plate. A shoe which is provided with the thermal sprayed layer exhibits an increased seizure resistance in comparison to a conventional shoe which is formed with a sintered layer, and can be manufactured inexpensively.

  • Patent number: 6371900
Abstract: A cooling drum for a twin-drum continuous casting machine is capable of ensuring an excellent drum body interior cooling effect and advantageously overcoming both the problem of wear of the cooling drum end portions that are pressure-contacted with, and slide on, the side dams and the problem of their local deformation, and that, as a result, can ensure long-term maintenance of a suitable pressure-contact sliding state between the side dams and the cooling drum so as to enable stable continuous casting over a prolonged period. The cooling drum comprises a drum body portion of a material having a thermal conductivity of 100-400 W/mK and drum end portions part or all of whose portions in pressure-contact with the side dams and/or part or all of whose inner regions are formed of a reinforcing material that is a high-hardness material having a Vickers hardness HV (250 g) of 300-600.

  • Patent number: 6363613
Abstract: The method for manufacturing a torsion bar shoulder bearing has four method steps: (1) the manufacture of a elastomeric spring as a not fully vulcanized molding for receiving a sleeve-shaped or bolt-shaped inner connecting part in a central bore and an outer sleeve-shaped connecting element; (2) the pretreatment of the surface regions, to be connected to the molding, of the connecting parts by means of an adhesive system; (3) the pushing of the molding onto the inner connecting part and the insertion of the molding thus reinforced into the outer connecting part (or in the opposite sequence), as a result of which the elastomeric molding is clamped under moderate prestress between the two connecting parts, and (4) the concluding full vulcanization of the elastomeric molding in the assembled bearing, using a tempering furnace, at temperatures of below 140 to 150° C.

  • Patent number: 6349470
Abstract: On the periphery surface of the outer race, the stepped portion is formed, and on one side of the race retention hole formed on the housing, a screw portion is provided coaxially with the race retention hole, in which the setscrew is screwed and tightened. Retention of the front surface of the setscrew makes the end face of the stepped portion, pressed against the snap ring retained with the annular groove, formed on the race retention hole. Since the outer race is clamped by the setscrew and the snap ring and the gap between the end face of the outer race and the setscrew, and the snap ring becomes null, the outer race is securely retained in the axial direction.

  • Patent number: 6349469
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method of aligning a bearing assembly relative to a roll in a fiber-making machine. The method of the present invention is particularly adapted for dryer cylinders in a paper-making machine, the dryer cylinders having an end rotatably mounted in a preferably freely carrying bearing assembly such as a continuous aligning roller bearing (CARB) that allows for axial (z direction) movement of the cylinder particularly axial movement due to thermal expansion. The bearing assembly includes inner and outer races of which the outer race is stationary with the inner race is affixed to the journal and moves therewith. For axially aligning or providing an initial offset of the outer race to the inner race, an alignment plate is mounted to the end of the cylinder journal during bearing housing installation that allows various measurements to be taken.

  • Patent number: 6347451
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a built-up camshaft by which the operational safety of the camshaft is ensured in a simple manner in any engine operation and the camshaft can arbitrarily be adapted to abutments which have different positions because of the individual engine construction. At least one cam is pushed onto a hollow shaft, after which the hollow shaft is expanded between the two faces of the cam which extend transversely with respect to the longitudinal course of the hollow shaft and at the respective bearing point by means of a highly pressurized pressure fluid. This fluid is delivered by a lance-shaped probe introduced into the hollow space of the shaft. On the one hand, a press fit occurs between the cam and the hollow shaft and, on the other hand, a bulging of the bearing point of the hollow shaft occurs which bridges the distance between the hollow shaft and the abutment.

  • Patent number: 6346066
Abstract: A tubular roll with glide bearings and a method for providing a tubular roll mantle with glide bearings. The roll mantle is supported on a roll axle by hydraulic glide bearing elements which are loaded hydraulically by a pressure medium. The roll is loaded from outside radially in a principal loading direction and the roll mantle is supported on the roll axle by glide bearing elements in the principal loading direction. The loading pressure and lubricant are fed to the glide bearing elements as separated from one another so that the movement of the roll mantle, the speed of movement and the change in speed are regulated by opening, closing and/or throttling the flow in the pressure duct of the loading pressure. The lubricant may be fed to the glide bearing elements irrespective of the loading pressure.

  • Patent number: 6343420
Abstract: The method includes sliding a first shim onto the support shaft until it abuts a shoulder. The first shim has a predetermined thickness. A bearing is then slid onto the tapered surface and a lock nut is tightened onto the threaded portion of the shaft. As the lock nut contacts the inner race of the bearing it causes the inner race to contact the first shim and also to radially expand outwardly, thereby preloading the bearing. The outer race of the bearing is then connected to a motor and the motor is operated at a predetermined, constant speed. The torque required to rotate the outer race of the bearing is measured and compared to a predetermine torque range to determine if the bearing is precisely preloaded.

  • Patent number: 6327773
Abstract: One or more force application members (e.g., a force transmission member and/or a hydraulic force application member) may be employed to provide a desired adjustment (e.g., a preload and/or a compression) to an adjustable spacer of a bearing assembly. The hydraulic force application member may provide a first stage of the adjustment to the spacer, and the force transmission member may be threadingly rotated to apply a second stage of the adjustment to the spacer. An additional force application member may (e.g., contemporaneously) oppose at least one of the force application members in the providing of the adjustment to the spacer. This opposing force may cause a gap between certain surfaces (e.g., in a press) until the adjustment to the spacer is completed. The closure of the gap may serve to indicate the completion of the desired adjustment to the spacer. A housing rotatable on a portion of the bearing assembly may be prevented from rotating at the closure of the gap.

  • Patent number: 6301783
Abstract: A shaft manipulating centering and assembly tool for use in a housing bore has four basic members, a manipulating member, a pressing member, a locking member and a power drive member. The manipulating member has an outer surface the radius of the bore and an inner surface that includes one section the radius of the shaft and a flat section. The pressing member has limited rotation within one end of the manipulating member and can push against the bore wall or shaft and can turn the manipulating member. The locking bar member anchors the tool on a housing stud. The drive member turns the pressing member and manipulating member and holds the locking bar in place. By placing the tool beside the shaft within the bore and turning it in a first direction, the shaft is lifted onto the manipulating member and the locking bar moves beside the housing stud.
