  • Patent number: 3952937
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ultrasonically welding the overlapped portions of a continuous metal strip that has been rolled about a longitudinal axis to form a tubular product. The metal strip is rolled around the outer surface of an internal mandrel by means of one or more forming tools disposed around the mandrel. At the exit end of the forming tool, a stationary, rigid, non-resonant anvil is formed by a portion of the outer surface of the mandrel so that the anvil is located inside the rolled metal strip and supported by that portion of the mandrel which extends outwardly between the longitudinal edges of the strip upstream of the point where the strip edges are brought together. As the rolled metal strip is advanced, the longitudinal edges thereof are overlapped and passed over the anvil.

  • Patent number: 3942706
Abstract: A steam iron soleplate, generator, and distributor subassembly of a thin soleplate with a coverplate spaced from and supported on the soleplate by spaced peripheral rib means to define a steam distributing passage therebetween. The coverplate is integrally attached to the soleplate by a continuous weld between the ribs and soleplate and steam generating means are provided in the upper surface of the coverplate separate and spaced from the soleplate and ducted below to the steam passage means. A heat generating element forms an integral part of the coverplate for heat transfer to the soleplate through the ribs primarily by conduction. • Patent number: 3941297
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for concurrently thermocompression bonding a plurality of lead frames to a plurality of planar articles. In operation, a plurality of lead frames are referenced to a plurality of unheated bonding tips and to the associated metallized bonding sites on a first side of a plurality of planar articles. The bonding tips are then simultaneously activated to independently move the referenced lead frames and articles in a first direction to engage the second side of each article with a heated thermode, and apply a sufficient compressive force to bond the leads of each lead frame to the associated bonding sites on the referenced article. The bonding tips are then returned to their initial or starting position.

  • Patent number: 3940048
Abstract: A device used during fusion butt-welding between the ends of tubes to form a backing for the weld inside the tubes. The device comprises a thin flexible metal support strip having end portions which are overlapped to provide an arcuate outer peripheral surface, means guiding the overlapping end portions for relative longitudinal sliding movement to change the peripheral circumference of the support strip, and means for biasing the end portions in a direction to increase the peripheral circumference of the device. For use, the circumference of the support strip is decreased in opposition to the biasing means, and a backing strip of refractory material is secured on the periphery of the support strip. Next the device is positioned with the backing strip adjacent the inner surfaces of and bridging the ends of the tubes to be welded. The device is activated so that the biasing for the support strip will press the backing strip into engagement with the tubes, and the tubes are ready for welding.

  • Patent number: 3940051
Abstract: A ferrite-to-metal bond suitable for the environment of a high-power microwave circulator is disclosed. The bonding surface of a gyromagnetic ferrite or garnet button is metallized by a sputtering process that deposits successive layers of nichrome, copper and gold thereon. During the sputtering process, a flexible stainless steel band surrounds the button to prevent sputtered material from being deposited on other than the bonding surface of the button. The metallized bonding surface is then soldered to a metal wall of the circulator. The bond so formed is capable of withstanding a peak power level in the circulator of 2.0 megawatts and an average power level of 3.5 kilowatts under standing-wave conditions.

  • Patent number: 3937383
Abstract: An improved pressure welding technique permits high speed room temperature seam bonding of metal sheets. A metal interlay is placed between the faying surfaces to be bonded and the assembly is compressed until the interlay is properly spread over the faying surfaces. The interlay has a cross-section designed to produce a highly differential flow when subjected to external compressive loads. This differential flow causes shear movement between the interlay and the faying surfaces which effects the weld. Joining speeds in excess of 10 feet per second are possible, with a reduction in sheet thickness of about 5 percent.

  • Patent number: 3937382
Abstract: An internal pipe clamp is provided by the present invention. The clamp is designed to clamp two joints of pipe into position for a circumferential weld. The clamp includes mechanism for spacing the two joints apart a very short distance to facilitate welding. A backup member is provided which is movable from a retracted position. The backup member comprises two backup portions each of which comprises two pivotally coupled backup segments. Each segment extends through an arc of approximately 90.degree. and terminates in a wedge shaped end that is complemental to the wedge shaped end of an adjacent segment. Power cylinders move each segment from a retracted to an extended position. Power cylinders are also coupled in opposed relationship with each adjacent pair of wedge shaped ends to force same into tight contiguous relationship when the segments are extended.

  • Patent number: 3934783
Abstract: A conductive wire is bonded to spaced parts of a semi-conductor device by an ultrasonic bonding wedge that is formed with side-by-side bonding faces of mutually different inclinations. One of the faces makes a forward bond having a lesser deformation at an inner end of the bond. The other of the bond faces is employed to make a rear bond in which a greater deformation is made at an outer end of the bond to facilitate parting of the wire at the second bond. A wire guide movably mounted adjacent the bonding wedge laterally shifts the wire from one bond face to the other.

  • Patent number: 3934780
Abstract: The present tubular containers, for example for foodstuffs, toothpaste, or the like, have a top cap secured to an initially open ended tubular body by means of a heat bond such as soldering where metal containers are involved or welding or fusing where plastics materials are involved. The heat for making the bond is generated by friction resulting from relative rotation between the cap and the tubular body. For this purpose, a tool is provided with a rotatably supported counter presser forming an inner holding member and with a rotating presser tool forming an outer holding member which holding members hold the cap therebetween so that its outer rim contacts the edge of the tubular body to produce frictional heat when the cap and tubular body are rotated relative to each other, said frictional heat being sufficient to cause said bond.

  • Patent number: 3934786
Abstract: A method and apparatus for splicing and welding the ends of stranded electrical cables wherein a compression connector receives and is deformed about portions of the cable ends while a welding fixture is positioned thereabout. The welding fixture effects a reduced pressure along the cable periphery so that as molten material is deposited in the connector to join the cable ends, a portion of the molten material is caused to migrate inward along the cable interstices.
