  • Patent number: 6296764
Abstract: An apparatus for simultaneously processing a plural number of samples, each of the samples including a fluid containing particulate matter. The apparatus is useful in cytology to collect a uniform monolayer of cells from a biological fluid. Each of a plural number of processing assemblies (corresponding to the plural number of samples) comprises a container, an agitator rotatable relative to the container for contacting and dispersing particulate matter in the fluid, a filter assembly including a filter for collecting particulate matter, and a pump for moving the fluid through the filter. Each container is supported on a separate container receiver, and each pump is engaged by a separate pump engagement. A rotary driver effects relative rotation of the agitators and their respective containers simultaneously to mix the samples in the containers.

  • Patent number: 6284145
Abstract: A screen plate (1) for screening of pulp suspensions, comprises a number of elongated at least partially curved screen slots (3). According to the invention every screen slot has a width which is maximally 0.8 mm, and the screen slots bend in such a way that a straight rod, which has a breadth which is less than the width of the screen slot and the length which is 5 mm, is prevented from passing through the screen slot, when the rod extends along the screen plate, independently of how this rod is oriented in relation to the screen slot. At that elongated stiff shives may be separated more efficiently by means of the screen plate. This screen plate may also be used for separating a pulp suspension into a first fraction comprising comparatively stiff fibers and a second fraction comprising comparatively flexible fibers.

  • Patent number: 6280375
Abstract: A centrifuge, especially a flow-through centrifuge free of rotating seals, for centrifuging biological fluids has a stand on which a frame (1) is rotatably mounted. A centrifuge chamber (3) is rotatably mounted on the rotating frame (1) to rotate about the axis of the latter. The centrifuge chamber (3) is driven in the same direction of rotation as the frame (1) but at twice the rotational speed. Coupling elements which are engaged by magnetic forces and are designed in the manner of a clutch disk or a gearwheel are used to transmit the torque to the centrifuge chamber or the rotating frame. Force is transmitted in a non-contact and wear-free manner. No lubrication is necessary, which also reduces the buildup of dust and dirt. In addition, there is little generation of noise.

  • Patent number: 6264895
Abstract: An evaporator comprises a base with a vacuum connection. A tray is fixed to the base, and has seating positions in which to seat pans which hold sample liquid. A transparent cover is attached to the base with a hinge. The cover fits over the tray and when closed forms a tight fit with the base and is in close proximity to the pans. The cover has inlets angled down at about 37° to 42° over each pan seating position such that when a vacuum source is connected to the vacuum connection, air from outside the evaporator is drawn in through the inlets and aimed toward the sample liquid in each pan such that the solvent evaporates. Pans are preferably commercially available pans which are about 70 mm in diameter and about 16 mm in height, and tapered outwardly towards the top. Preferably, the cover has two inlets for each pan, aimed in opposite directions, and on opposite sides of each pan, such that when air strikes the sample liquid it induces a swirling motion.

  • Patent number: 6241894
Abstract: The separation device of the invention is directed to a container having an interior surface defining a channel. The container further has an inlet and an outlet. On the interior surface of the channel are pole tips which may be in a sawtooth configuration having sharp angles facing the interior of the channel that generate a high gradient magnetic field in the channel. Within the channel may be incorporated separating material. The separating material eliminates the direct contact of cells with the magnetic pole material. The separating material, as well as the sawtooth pole tips also serves the purpose of creating a field gradient across the entire container to avoid the problem of zero field gradient in the center of the container where the velocity is greatest, and where more cells flow. The separating material is designed to cause a substantially unobstructed flow of medium through the channel so that unlabeled substances are not trapped in the separating material.

  • Patent number: 6186340
Abstract: A drum filter comprises a pair of circular disks connected in coaxial relation by a plurality of axially extending disc support rods. A cylindrical filter media is disposed between the disc support rods. Unfiltered liquid is admitted to the interior of the drum filter and flows radially outwardly therefrom through the filter media. Reciprocating backwash nozzles direct high pressure liquid radially inwardly against the exterior surface of the filter media to backwash contaminants collected on the radially inner surface thereof into a contaminant collector disposed internally of the filter drum. • Patent number: 6173859
Abstract: A filter housing has a pot-like base, a lid that closes the base in a pressure-tight manner, one or several additional elements such as pipes, flanges or the like, which are connected to the wall of the base in the area of the seal between base and lid, and at least one rib which extends radially around the base in this area. The rib has varying dimensions around the circumference of the base and a reduced cross-section in the area in which the additional elements are connected to a wall of the base. • Patent number: 6139736
Abstract: A U-shaped side of a yoke is mounted on the confronting sides of two rotating plates attached to the inside of a magnetically agglomerating and treating tank, and a plurality of magnets, each having a magnetic force of not less than 12,000 gausses, are mounted on the confronting sides of the yoke, respectively, and the gap between the faces of the confronting magnets is set at 300 mm to form a magnetic field. Liquid containing impurities, such as magnetic and non-magnetic suspensions is caused to flow into this magnetic field for contact with the magnets for a predetermined period of time, so that the non-magnetic suspension is magnetically agglomerated together with the magnetic suspension, so as to be attracted to the magnets, and the magnetically agglomerated matter adhering to the surfaces of the magnets is separated.
