  • Patent number: 4516808
Abstract: The specification discloses a pavement grinding apparatus for moving across and grinding a paved surface. The apparatus includes a main frame that is propelled across the surface and a subframe that is connected to the main frame by a sliding connector that allows free vertical motion of the subframe. A grinding unit is mounted on the subframe and is supported by at least one grinding unit roller which is operable to control the grinding depth of the grinding unit independently of the position of the main frame. A boom extends forwardly from the subframe and has at least one boom wheel mounted on the forward end of the boom. The boom in cooperation with the subframe stabilizes and creates a planing effect for the grinding unit. The subframe may be lifted vertically by a plurality of cables and a hoist mechanism with the sliding connector allowing and guiding such vertical motion.

  • Patent number: 4508182
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for controlling the azimuthal drift of a drill bit in an inclined well bore is described. The method comprises prestressing a drill collar member in torsion to adjust the angle in the horizontal plant that the drill bit makes with the longitudinal axis of the well bore when the drill collar is subjected to the gravitational, axial, and torsional forces of the drilling operation. The drill collar includes an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member. The two are held against relative rotation at one end. The desired torque is placed in the members by rotating the other ends of the members relative to each other in the desired direction. A splined member engages grooves in the inner and outer surfaces of the members to hold the members in their prestressed state.

  • Patent number: 4502813
Abstract: The asphalt laying machine comprises a rear body divided into sections with smoothing and compacting units suspended through vibration dampers in the frame. Each unit comprises an intermediate part and a smoothing part interconnected by means of a rear shaft bearing and a front connecting rod connected to an eccentric. By virtue of this interconnection an elliptical movement is transferred to the smoothing part during operation of the machine, and this movement produces a heavy tamping at the front edge, a smoothing and vibrating effect at the intermediate area of the ironing plate, and a succeeding tamping and polishing effect at the rear edge area. The tamping foot of a scraper plate suspended on the intermediate part tamps laid asphalt synchronously in opposition to the tamping plate of the ironing plate by virtue of reaction forces transferred through the intermediate part.

  • Patent number: 4480695
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for producing viscous petroleum from a subsurface formation. The apparatus includes a generally horizontal cased well through the subsurface formation with injection and production tubings within the well. The casing is perforated and the inner tubings carry a movable packer and a rotatable agitator. The method comprises injecting a heating and drive fluid for moving heated viscous petroleum through the perforations in the casing and into the well for production to the wellhead. Production is monitored for the ratio of produced packer fluid and viscous petroleum. Based on that ratio, the packer is moved within the casing to positions along the horizontal well to maximize production of petroleum. The rotatable agitator assists in removal from the well bore of formation solids produced with the viscous petroleum.

  • Patent number: 4480696
Abstract: A method of fracturing a subterranean formation with a stabilized foamed fracturing fluid comprising from about 50 percent to in excess of about 96 percent by volume of carbon dioxide with the remainder comprising an aqueous liquid and a selected surfactant. The foam is formed in situ by injection of a stabilized liquid-liquid emulsion containing liquid carbon dioxide into a well bore penetrating the formation. The temperature and pressure of the emulsion is controlled to maintain the carbon dioxide in the liquid phase during injection into the well bore. Thereafter, the carbon dioxide is heated by the subterranean formation to a temperature above about 88.degree. F. at which time the stabilized emulsion spontaneously forms a high quality stabilized foam.

  • Patent number: 4466667
Abstract: A tracking system for measuring and recording the movements of a longwall shearer vehicle (10) includes an optical tracking assembly (B) carried at one end of a desired vehicle path and a retroreflector assembly (A) carried by the vehicle. Continuous horizontal and vertical light beams are alternately transmitted at (38) by means of a rotating Dove prism (58) to the reflector assembly (A). A vertically reciprocating reflector (34) interrupts the continuous light beams and converts these to discrete horizontal and vertical light beam images transmitted at (68) at spaced intervals along the path. A second rotating Dove prism (64) rotates the vertical images to convert them to a second series of horizontal images while the first mentioned horizontal images are left unrotated and horizontal. The images are recorded on a film (74, 104). An overlay (106) with X and Y co-ordinates may be utilized to view the images and provide a graphical representation of the vehicle's path along the longwall coal face.

  • Patent number: 4465137
Abstract: The present invention is a sequenced method of increasing the injectivity of oil bearing formations and increasing hydrocarbon recovery. The method of the invention is initiated by injecting an aqueous fluid at an ambient temperature into the formation through an injection well while concurrently recovering fluid at a production well. The first injection stage is followed by the injection of fluid of gradually increasing temperature until a temperature of about 75.degree.-100.degree. C. is reached. Finally, steam is injected into the formation.

  • Patent number: 4463815
Abstract: Adjustable torsional type latching means (5) for triggering a mechanical well jar tool comprises torsionally actuated gear racks (20,22) including acme threads or teeth which extend axially on opposite adjacent side portions of telescopic parts (1,2). The gear rack teeth which mesh in the latched position have incline tooth faces that can be disengaged by applying a strong axial force which torsionally stresses and rotates a torsion sleeve (16) portion of one telescoping part (1) and gear rack (20) thereon away from the other part (2) and gear rack (22). Upon release of the latching device (5) the telescopic parts (1,2) of the well jar and the kinetic energy stored therein are freed for a limited longitudinal jarring movement. The torsion sleeve portion (16) has an end portion connected to the other telescopic parts by a second slot-spline-gear (15) of relative short axial length, which serves as a torque support in the latched position and becomes deengaged during a jarring stroke.
