A frequency shift mechanism of the imaging system shifts the first wavelength of the pulse intensity pattern to a second wavelength. The protection device comprises a processor, which determines a start-up time period, based on the parameter, during which purge gas is supplied to the detector prior to cooling of the detector. The processor may selectively trigger commencing or maintaining application of purge gas to the detector or cooling of the detector in dependence on the parameter.

The reflected wavelengths have an energy return indicative of the intensity of the allergic reaction in the mast cells. The intensity of the allergic reaction is analyzable from the reflected wavelengths and other data over time. A plurality of temperature sensors measuring local dermal temperatures surrounding the sensor array, the local dermal temperature being indicative of the intensity of the allergic reaction.
