  • Patent number: 7107326
Abstract: A method and system for policy provisioning and access managing on a data-over-cable system. One method includes receiving a first message on a first network device such as a CMTS from a second network device and marking the first message with an identifier of a network access device. The method further includes intercepting the first message on a third network device prior to a first protocol network server such as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (“DHCP”) server receives the first message. When the third network device intercepts the first message, the third network device determines the identity of the second network device. Based on the identity of the second network device and using the identifier of the network access device, the third network device manages an assignment of configuration parameters for the second network device.

  • Patent number: 7010600
Abstract: A method is disclosed for managing network resources in multiple administrative domains. According to the method, a user is authenticated in a first administrative domain. A token is generated for the user that identifies the user as being assigned a role. The token is configured to identify the user by the role to a component of a second administrative domain. When the user requests a resource of the second administrative domain, its component examines the token and the role to determine whether to grant access to the resource. As a result, the second administrative domain may grant the user access to its resources without re-authenticating the user in the second administrative domain.

  • Patent number: 6981055
Abstract: A method and system for optimizing routing traffic to a destination when multiple routes are available. A performance monitoring and inference component measures the performance of the available paths to a large set of subnetworks, and uses those measurements to infer the performance of all available paths to an even larger set of subnetworks. A routing optimization component uses a cost function that assigns a cost to a routing table based on information from the performance monitoring and inference component, as well as other path characteristics, and further uses a minimization methodology to find a routing table with a very low cost, as defined by the cost function. A BGP bridge takes the routing table generated by the routing optimization component and communicates that information to the routers using BGP, thereby ensuring that the routers will route traffic in accordance with the routing table.

  • Patent number: 6965941
Abstract: A network interface device provides a fast-path that avoids most host TCP and IP protocol processing for most messages. The host retains a fallback slow-path processing capability. In one embodiment, generation of a response to a TCP/IP packet received onto the network interface device is accelerated by determining the TCP and IP source and destination information from the incoming packet, retrieving an appropriate template header, using a finite state machine to fill in the TCP and IP fields in the template header without sequential TCP and IP protocol processing, combining the filled-in template header with a data payload to form a packet, and then outputting the packet from the network interface device by pushing a pointer to the packet onto a transmit queue. A transmit sequencer retrieves the pointer from the transmit queue and causes the corresponding packet to be output from the network interface device.

  • Patent number: 6954796
Abstract: A method is provided for scheduling the transmission time of multimedia objects. The method includes dividing the transmission time into frames based on an object decoding rate. The transmission time is further divided within each frame of the multimedia object channel into time slots. The number of time slots is equivalent to dividing the transmission rate by the multimedia object decoding time. A delivery time schedule of multimedia objects is formed with a time stamp within the scheduled object delivery period or frame period. A scheduled object delivery period is computed which is equivalent to the maximum object group delay period allowable. Objects that cannot be delivered within a current time slot are re-scheduled to a later time slot.

  • Patent number: 6950883
Abstract: The invention provides methods and systems for provisioning fault-tolerant ring structures that do not necessarily involve fully provisioning all spans of a ring with service capacity. The system allows a plurality of nodes to be connected in a ring structure. The ring structure can allow a ring to be provisioned without a continuous loop of service capacity around all legs of the ring. This postpones or totally avoids the cost of service capacity until a demand requires it. Only protection capacity is required to close the loop, and the decision to add working capacity can be made as warranted. At the same time, this ring structure can retain its fault-tolerant nature and also provide acceptable performance.

  • Patent number: 6948128
Abstract: A nonlinear editing system for audio, video and/or other source materials comprises a system to define at least one time line representing the edit, the time line being represented in the editing system as an operator graph. The operator graph includes operators, representing sources and time-based effects, and time varying connections therebetween. For each period of the defined time line wherein the connections do not change, a expression tree comprising a simplified representation of the operators and the connections required to render that portion of the time line is extracted. Each expression tree can be examined to ensure that all of the required sources and/or connections are available to render that portion of the time line in real time and, if this is not the case, a determination can be made of which portions of the expression tree can be pre-rendered to an intermediate result, the intermediate result being substituted into expression tree to provide real time rendering.

  • Patent number: 6931427
Abstract: A dedicated service finder runs on each host on which data management services run. This service finder caches handles that allow clients to manage the corresponding service and keeps track of other hosts that are also running the service finder. In one embodiment, the service finder registers itself with an existing lookup service so that a client can perform a single lookup for the service finder and then obtain other services from it. Accordingly, only a single lookup is required to obtain all the services running on a specific host. In accordance with another embodiment, the service finder monitors events generated by existing lookup services that occur when other service finders register with the lookup services. In this manner, the service finder can maintain a list of other hosts that have service finders running on them. This arrangement allows a client that has located one service finder to retrieve from that service finder information concerning other hosts and data services running on those hosts.

  • Patent number: 6928476
Abstract: Remotely storing data between computers or devices across a wide area network for purposes of redundancy or collaboration. A service brokers the transfer of data between an initiating computer and a destination device, thereby establishing a peer-to-peer architecture by which data of the initiating computer can be stored remotely on the destination device. The process begins as the initiating computer issues a request for permission to store the data remotely on an identified destination device. The permission is granted if the initiating computer properly identifies the destination device using information, such as a network address or a password, that is privately communicated between the users of the destination device and the initiating computer. Accordingly, substantially any computer user having access to the Internet can achieve remote backup of data and remote collaboration of data with the assistance of a trusted third party who also is registered with the service.
