  • Patent number: 5831367
Abstract: A rotor for a two-pole synchronous reluctance or a switched reluctance motor can be constructed from a stack of flat, planar laminations of grain-oriented materials. To enhance the necessary anisotropy of reluctance, slots are provided in the lamination along the magnetic flux lines in the preferred grain direction. The laminations may be provided with an essentially circular outer perimeter, and slots for a squirrel cage winding provided. A complete, efficient squirrel cage winding can thus be provided for a two-pole synchronous reluctance motor for starting purposes.

  • Patent number: 5832507
Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting ASCII path names to parsed path name structures provides downward compatibility so that program modules written for modern operating systems which provide parsed path name structure inputs may be run under older operating systems which provide ASCII path name inputs. The method includes, in its most basic form, the steps of converting the prefix and file name of an ASCII path name to a unicode string, then converting the unicode string to a parsed path structure. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method is implemented in compiled object code written in the "C" computer programming language.

  • Patent number: 5832478
Abstract: The present invention is a method of searching an on-line dictionary in any language representation using syllables and syllable count and an on-line dictionary, where the on-line dictionary includes a primary headword field, a segmented primary headword field, additional unsegmented language representation (headword) fields as required, additional segmented representation (headword) fields as required, a syllable count field, additional syllable count fields as required, and a definition field. The user selects a language representation for a query and makes the query in the selected language representation. The present invention then parses the query to determine if segmented syllables were used in the query and how many, if any. If no segmented syllables were used in the query, a character string search for the headword that matches the query is conducted. If the query contains segmented syllables, a syllable search for headwords that contain the same syllables in the same locations is conducted.

  • Patent number: 5821658
Abstract: An eddy current drive has an electromagnet and an armature. Either one of the electromagnet or the armature is coupled to a motor shaft so as to rotate therewith, while the other is coupled to a load portion. The motor can rotate at a continuous speed, while the speed of the load portion can vary by varying the energization of the electromagnet, so as to vary the coupling between the electromagnet and the armature. The rotation of the motor shaft generates electrical current that is used to energize the electromagnet. The amount of the electrical current that is provided to the electromagnet can be varied to vary the output speed of the load portion. The electrical current can be generated by a member that rotates in unison with the electromagnet. A rotary coupler provides a speed control signal to vary the amount of current that is provided to the electromagnet. The rotary coupler can also provide power from the rotating generator to a stationary controller.

  • Patent number: 5821662
Abstract: A brush holder is held between a yoke of a starter motor and an end frame made of resin. The brush holder has an engaging guide portion projecting axially therefrom and engaging the yoke and the end frame and a projected peripheral portion projecting outside from peripheral surfaces of the yoke and that of the end frame. The brush holder contacts the yoke and the end frame at cylindrical surfaces thereof and surfaces perpendicular to the cylindrical surfaces. This construction allows the brush holder to be prevented from loosening, thus improving the vibration proof and durability of the brush holder. Further, the brush holder contacts the yoke and the end frame at the cylindrical surfaces thereof and the surfaces perpendicular to the cylindrical surfaces, thus dissipating the heat of a brush through the brush holder and the yoke more efficiently.

  • Patent number: 5821656
Abstract: A magnetic bearing with reduced control-flux-induced rotor loss includes a rotor 14, and a stator 12 having a plurality of slots S1-S16 around which coils 150-156 of a first Phase A and coils 160-166 of a second Phase B are wound. The winding configuration provides a two pole magnetic field around a rotor/stator gap 15 which is sinusoidal and which can be directed to any location along the gap 15. The configuration minimizes discontinuities or sharp changes in control flux in the gap which thereby reduces rotor losses. Also, the stator tooth gap g1 is minimized to provide smooth flux distribution along the rotor/stator gap 15. More phases and more or less stator slots may be used.

  • Patent number: 5811898
Abstract: A rotary actuator has a ferromagnetic armature with at least one arcuate-shaped wall extending circumferentially at the perimeter of the armature. The stator has a pair of axially and circumferentially aligned axial walls, separated by an axial air gap, disposed radially outward of, and in relatively circumferentially advanced relationship to, each such arcuate-shaped wall. Current flow in an electromagnetic coil associated with the stator causes magnetic flux to pass from one axial wall of each pair, across an air gap, to the respective arcuate-shaped armature wall, through that wall, and across a radial air gap to the other axial wall of each pair. Each arcuate-shaped wall has a ferromagnetic characteristic that causes it to be positioned to increasingly circumferentially overlap the respective pair of axial walls as the magnetic flux increases. The actuator may include a rotary flow control valve, such as an EGR valve for an automotive engine.

  • Patent number: 5808395
Abstract: The present invention concerns a motor for generating torques around more than one axis with respect to an object that can be rotated and revolved around only one point. Only one mechanism is necessary to maintain a prescribed position or to produce changes in position around one or more axes (X, Y, or Z).The permanent-magnet excited synchronous machine comprises stator shells (10 & 10.1), multiple-phase windings (11 & 11.1), and a rotor (12) with permanent magnets (13 & 13.1), whereby the annular and spherical surfaces (14) of the rotor are more extensive than the annular and spherical surfaces (15) of the shells. All the spherical surfaces share the same center (M) of curvature, which simultaneously constitutes the origin of the coordinate systems, and the center of rotation. The shaft (17) is supported only at the center of curvature and such as to ensure freedom of motion throughout the reference coordinate system (21).

  • Patent number: 5806058
Abstract: A database managing system for effecting management in accessing data stored in a database via an index is so configured so as to prevent duplication of index key values and increase of index key values from degrading the access performance and lowering the storage efficiency of the index. Upon receiving, from an application program, a request to add a data record, a database manager adds this data record to a data portion and effects addition and update of an index record in an index portion. An index manager intervenes in this processing and excepts, from the index portion, an index record containing an index key value which has reached an upper limit value of the number of duplications preset in an exception key managing table. At the time of recreation of the index, the index manager refers to access time contained in index records and excepts index records which have not been accessed during an elapse of a fixed period of time.
