  • Patent number: 7866196
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a circular metal tank, from an elongated sheet of metal. The upper and lower longitudinal edges of the metal sheet are bent to produce a first “L” bend and a second “chair” bend, respectively. The sheet of metal is moved in a helical trajectory such that the second bend comes into proximity above the first bend. The second bend and the first bend are welded together such that the wall of the cylindrical tank is formed. Welding of the bends serves to stress relieve or anneal the bent metal, thereby preventing cracks in the metal which may result in leaks and/or compromise the structural integrity of the tank. The first and second bends additionally cooperate to form a helical roller track on the outside of the tank. The tank is supported and rotated about its longitudinal axis on a plurality of rollers that engage the roller track.

  • Patent number: 7854154
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling a rolling process, in which a metal strip is rolled flat by use of at least one roller. It is known from the prior art that the relative position of a neutral point represents a measure of the instantaneous stability of a rolling process. However, traditional methods for calculating the position of the neutral point do not accurately represent the actual properties of metal and therefore have only limited usefulness for predicting the stability of a rolling process. In order to allow better control of a rolling process for rolling a metal strip with regard to the actual behavior of the metal strip, the invention proposes a new method for calculating the relative position of the neutral point, in which in particular the flat yield stress ke and the hydrostatic pressure pNH at the neutral point are incorporated.

  • Patent number: 7854155
Abstract: A method for improving the running-out of a metal rolled strip (1), the rolled trailing strip end (1a) of which exits out of a respectively last roll stand (2) of a multistand rolling mill (3) at a rolling speed, wherein during rolling between two consecutive roll stands (F1, F2, F3 . . . Fn) the strip tension (a) is adjusted to stabilize the strip position, provides that shortly before the rolled trailing strip end (1a) exits the developing rolling force differences are measured separately for each roll stand (F1, F2, F3 . . . Fn), that from this the pivot value (16) and the pivot direction are derived for forming a corrective value for the adjustment of the rolls (10, 11) and that the adjustment is corrected.

  • Patent number: 7849722
Abstract: Apparatus and method of controlling strip geometry in casting strip having a rolling mill. A target thickness profile is calculated as a function of the measured entry thickness profile of the strip while satisfying profile and flatness operating requirements. A differential strain feedback from longitudinal strain in the strip is calculated by a control system by comparing the exit thickness profile with the target thickness profile, and a control signal is generated to control a device capable of affecting the geometry of the strip processed by the hot rolling mill. A feed-forward control reference and/or sensitivity vector may also be calculated as a function of the target thickness profile, and used in generating the control signal sent to the control device. The control device may be selected from one or more of the group consisting of a bending controller, gap controller and coolant controller.

  • Patent number: 7841222
Abstract: Thread lug forming systems form thread lugs (36) on container necks or necked end domes. A continuously rotating cam system (100) has multiple sets of thread lug forming tools (135) which are driven to recirculate about stationary cams (130). The cams actuate inner and outer forming tools (150, 152) of the tool sets as they progress around the cams to form the thread lugs. • Patent number: 7827843
Abstract: A device for controlling the drawing process in a transfer press has two tool parts which act in opposition to one another and between which the workpiece to be deformed is held. One tool part is moved between two reversal points by a mechanical crank mechanism driven at a constant rotational speed. The second tool part is connected to the piston of a hydraulic differential cylinder via a piston rod. The movement of the piston is controlled by the supply of pressure medium into a first chamber and by the discharge of pressure medium out of the second chamber of the differential cylinder. During a first time segment within a range delimited by the first and the second reversal point, the rod-side face of the piston is acted upon by a pressure which is sufficiently high to accelerate the second tool part as that, when the two tool parts impinge one onto the other, both tool parts move virtually at the same speed.

  • Patent number: 7823432
Abstract: The problem to be solved by the present invention is to clear up an eccentric load onto a pin and a problem of deformation and cavity due to flowing material during extrusion when spring washer blind-holes in a piston for an automobile transmission are formed by extrusion with a pin. After an annular region along the peripheral edge portion on the back of an end plate of a secondary workpiece is flattened, the secondary workpiece is set on a lower die. Further, while the lower die is pressed with upper dies and cushion pressure is applied on the lower die, pins, for piercing the spring washer blind-holes are made to perform an extrusion operation onto the end plate of the secondary workpiece from the backside of the end plate. The extruded material is made to flow into recess holes of the upper die, and thus spring washer blind-holes are formed. Then, projections which have flowed and protrude on the front side are removed by turning with a lathe.
