Abstract: A WEB server includes a control unit for HTTP server, a table of addresses of VOD servers, and a table of identifiers of video data. The control unit accesses these tables, in response to a request from a user of a terminal device for a display of video data, to retrieve therefrom an address of a video server and an identifier of a title of video data related to information on a WEB page accessed by the user, then transfers the address and the identifier to the terminal device. This enables the user of a video-on-demand system to easily obtain video data associated with information on the WEB server.

Abstract: A program guide information producing apparatus outputs self-produced program guide information and other broadcaster's program guide information. In the program guide information producing apparatus, a common program guide information producing section generates self-produced common program guide information. Furthermore, a program guide information output section unites the self-produced common program guide information with other broadcaster's common program guide information received from a program guide information collecting/transmitting apparatus and outputs the united common program guide information. Thus, the self-produced common program guide information is surely output even when the program guide information collecting/transmitting apparatus or the like is in trouble.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for synchronizing a digital video system that includes a transmitter, a receiver, and a decoder. A transport packet is received from the transmitter. At the start of receiving the transport packet, a system time clock timestamp is captured. A program clock reference timestamp is also obtained from the transport packet and is compared with the system time clock timestamp.

Abstract: A method for generating commercial information using a data recording device can provide commercial sponsors with feedback regarding the effectiveness of their commercials. According to the method, program data including a commercial is recorded. The recorded program data including the commercial is played back. A trigger event for the commercial is detected during playback. Information identifying the commercial is stored in response to detection of the trigger event.

Abstract: A system and method for providing signals from a plurality of satellites to a plurality of receiving units is disclosed. The system and method of the present invention make efficient use of multi-switches to enable multiple receiving units to seamlessly alternate between channels of various satellite signals, and optionally between satellite signals and terrestrial antenna signals. In basic form, first and second receptors, such as DISH satellite LNBs, are connected to input ports of primary Digital Broadcast System multi-switches having multiple input ports and output ports. The output ports of the first such primary multi-switch are conductively connected to first input ports of at least two secondary multi-switches, and the output ports of the second such primary multi-switch are conductively connected to second input ports of the same secondary multi-switches. The outputs of the secondary multi-switches are provided to receiving units.

Abstract: A local user issues recording instructions via the Internet to a remote computing device. The remote recording device records broadcast programs available to it according to the received recording instructions, and compresses and encodes the recorded program into a specified media format. The file holding the encoded broadcast program may be subdivided into multiple smaller files before being moved into another computer specified by the user and accessible via the Internet. The remote computing device may receive recording instruction via a pulse telephone and may be incorporated into existing video cassette recorders.

Abstract: The method of linking terms in an electronic message to program information in an electronic program guide (EPG) comprises the steps of receiving an electronic message, comparing terms in the electronic message to terms in the program information of the EPG, and displaying the electronic message so that any terms in the electronic message which have a match in the program information based on the step of comparing terms, are distinguishable from terms which have no such match. The electronic message interface is adapted to link terms in an electronic message to program information in an electronic program guide (EPG).

Abstract: A broadcast method and system for continuously and opportunistically driving an optimal broadcast schedule based on most recent client demand feedback from a distributed set of broadcast clients. The broadcast system includes an operation center that broadcasts meta-data to a plurality of client systems. The meta-data describes a plurality of pieces of content that are in consideration for upcoming broadcasts by the server. Each client receives the broadcasted meta-data from and sends back a set of client demand feedback data to the operations center, wherein the user feedback data reflects a client's interest level in at least a portion of the pieces of content. The feedback data, which typically may include ratings and/or relative rankings, may be user-generated, automatically-generated, or a combination of the two. The system then determines a most opportunistic piece of content to be broadcast based on an aggregation of the client demand feedback data.

Abstract: A system for receiving and presenting content at a user location includes a profiling agent that creates a user profile based upon a plurality of inputs by a user. The user profile represents preference characteristics of the user. A storage device is coupled to the profiling agent and stores the user profile. A receiver is configured to receive a set of parameters defined for at least one content. The set of parameters originates from a source of contents. A processing module is coupled to the receiver and the storage device and correlates the user profile with the set of parameters to determine whether parameters in the set of parameters match preference characteristics in the user profile. The processing module further generates a match signal when a sufficient number of the parameters match preference characteristics in the user profile.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a data processing system and method that control the outputs of a receiving apparatus depending upon a copy restriction code. The receiving apparatus determines whether the copy restriction code allows for one or no copies to be made and controls the outputs of the receiving apparatus accordingly.

Abstract: A pop-up option palette for controlling electronic equipment such as a set top box. The pop-up option palette of the present invention is implemented as an overlay window enabled by HTML. The pop-up option palette appears anywhere on the system at the touch of a particular key on the remote control and disappears at the touch of the same key in the preferred embodiment. The pop-up option palette provides shortcut methods for jumping to other areas of the system, eliminating the need for actual toolbars or menus. When the pop-up key is activated, a window providing a palette of options appears overlaying the browser's main window. The content of the window can be determined based on the page being displayed so that appropriate information relevant to the page being displayed appears within the pop-up option palette window. Thus, the options available on the pop-up option palette are context sensitive. Additionally, help available through the help button is also context sensitive.

Abstract: In an in-building CATV system in which an upward signal is frequency-converted to an in-building upward signal using an up-converter at a terminal side and the frequency-converted in-building upward signal is outputted to an external system after frequency-converting the in-building upward signal to an upward signal for outputting using a down-converter, a high frequency signal for frequency conversion leaking out from the up-converter is occasionally transmitted to the down-converter. Then, a trap circuit for removing the high frequency signal is provided on an in-building upward signal path in each converter. And an equalizer is provided on an upward signal path in each converter to compensate a transmission loss in the frequency band of the in-building upward signal occurring when the in-building upward signal is passed through the trap circuit.

A server provides a video file and an audio file, and a server manager manages the server so as to transmit a video file and an audio file at the user's request. An exchange converts the video file and the audio file provided from the server through a network to the corresponding video and audio signals. A mobile terminal receives the video and audio signals from the exchange through separate channels, and reads only the user requested data from the received video and audio signals.

However, the additional data (ADA) contained in the location (LO) indicated by the pointer (PO), may also be software for various purposes such as, for example, playing games or configuring a receiver (REC) which co-operates with the security device (SD).

A navigator monitors the current play position of the multimedia content and compares that position with navigation objects. Each navigation object defines a start position, a stop position, and an filtering action to perform on the portion of the multimedia content that begins at the start position and ends at the stop position. When the current play position falls within the portion of multimedia content defined by a particular navigation object, the navigator activates the filtering action that was assigned to the navigation object. Filtering actions include skipping, muting, reframing, etc., the portion of multimedia content defined by a navigation object. A variety of systems may be used to implement the present invention, such as computer systems (consumer and server), television systems, and audio systems.
