Patent number: 6673026Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and method for measuring force, primarily due to fatigue. In one embodiment, a finger fatigue measuring system is provided which measures the force output from fingers while the fingers are repetitively generating forces as they strike a keyboard. Force profiles of the fingers are generated from the measurements and evaluated for fatigue. The system can be used clinically to evaluate patients, to ascertain the effectiveness of clinical intervention, pre-employment screening, to assist in minimizing the incidence of repetitive stress injuries at the keyboard, mouse, joystick, and to monitor effectiveness of various finger strengthening systems. The system can also be used in a variety of different applications adapted for measuring forces produced during performance of repetitive motions.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2001Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: San Diego State University FoundationInventors: Robert S. Patent number: 6638233Abstract: Catheters, kits, and methods are provided for removing material from a body lumen. The catheters and methods may be used in a variety of body lumens, including but not limited to coronary and other arteries. In general, the catheter has a cutting element that cuts material while the material is engaged by a material capture device on the catheter body. Preferably, the material capture device tensions the material during cutting, which reduces the amount of cutting force required. The material capture device typically follows a path that draws material into the catheter body. Preferably, but not necessarily, the material capture device may be arranged on the catheter body to advance along a path outwardly from the catheter body into the material and then inwardly towards the catheter body to tension the material. The cutting element on the catheter body moves between a first position and a second position to cut the material while in tension.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1999Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Fox Hollow Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Tim Corvi, Stephen Boyd, Brett Follmer, John G. Patent number: 6616618Abstract: What is described here is a method of and a device for visualizing the orientation of therapeutic sound waves onto a region to be treated or processed, respectively, using a display unit including a screen on which the orientation of said therapeutic sound waves is symbolically displayed with respect to the region to be treated. The invention excels itself by the provision that the sound wave source and the region in space, through which the sound waves are propagating, as well as the region to be treated or processed (hereinafter referred to as treatment site) are perspectively displayed on said screen by allocation of physical figures, and that the perspective view varies with the correct movement when the site or the orientation of the sound wave source and/or the treatment site and/or the site or the orientation of the screen is varied.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Storz Medical AGInventor: Ulrich Hagelauer

Patent number: 6610019Abstract: Tinnitus is defined as sound(s) heard by an individual when no external sound is present and often takes the form of a hissing, ringing, chirping or clicking sound which may be either intermittent or constant. According to the American Tinnitus Association, tinnitus affects tens of millions of Americans and many suffer so severely from tinnitus they are not able to function normally on a daily basis. Unfortunately the exact cause or causes of tinnitus are not understood by the medical community and thus many tinnitus sufferers are told by their doctors to “learn to live with it”. In accordance with novel aspects of Applicant's monofrequency tinnitus patient treatment apparatus and process, phase cancellation effects are achieved by utilizing an externally generated sound which is subjectively selected by the monofrequency tinnitus patient to match in both tone and loudness his or her tinnitus sound.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2002Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Inventor: Daniel S. Patent number: 6582380Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the activity level of one or more individuals and modifying the behavior of those individuals based on feedback from the activity level monitoring is disclosed. When applying the system and method to hyperactive children in a classroom environment, an activity monitor is attached to each hyperactive child. The activity monitor determines the intensity of the subject's activity at the end of each epoch (approximately every 5 seconds), stores the determined intensity, and compares the determined intensity to an epoch threshold. If the determined intensity exceeds the epoch threshold, the hyperactive child is given vibrotactile feedback by the attached activity monitor. The length of time that the vibrotactile feedback is applied is proportional to the amount the determined epoch intensity exceeds the epoch threshold.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2001Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Ambulatory Monitoring, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Kazlausky, William Gruen, Warren W.
