Trifluoroacetic acid is contacted with an excess of methanol and distilled to form a methyltrifluoroacetate/methanol azeotrope. The azeotrope is contacted with trifluoroacetic acid in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a strong acid followed by distillation to obtain methyltrifluoroacetate.
