  • Patent number: 7610027
Abstract: A system and method for medium access control (MAC) protocol which controls transmissions in wireless devices to at least substantially comply with specific absorption rate (SAR) limits. The system and method of MAC protocol uses “source-based” time averaging measurements of transmitter “on-times” and an integral of transmission power to direct transmitter duty-cycle such that SAR limits are met. The system and method monitors and controls topology-dependent functions of a node transceiver, including transceiver duty cycle, transceiver transmit power levels and transceiver power-time products, using a automatic transmission control protocol (ATP) to vary functions to maintain specific absorption rate (SAR) limits for handheld and portable devices which are used close to human bodies. In cases in which SAR limits are approached, the ATP can direct the transceiver at the device to adjust each function, or combination of functions, to maintain an acceptable SAR limit.

  • Patent number: 7583962
Abstract: Included in a wireless communication network having a plurality of base stations capable of communicating with a plurality of mobile stations located in a coverage area of the network is a redundancy controller. The redundancy controller is capable of detecting a failure in one of the base stations. The redundancy controller is also capable of causing one of the other base stations to use a predetermined amount of its total communication capacity to communicate with mobile stations in a coverage area of the failed base station. The redundancy controller may select all base stations having coverage areas nearby to that of the failed base station and cause all those base stations to use an amount of their total communication capacity to communicate with mobile stations in the coverage area of the failed base station.

  • Patent number: 7565133
Abstract: To enable a user of a communication terminal to note that the terminal has received data by data communication conducted in the background of a voice communication, easily and in the required time. After establishing a voice communication line between mobile phone 100-2, mobile phone 100-1 establishes a data communication line with mobile phone 100-2 and acquires image data. When disconnecting a voice communication line, mobile phone 100-1 produces a notification sound and displays the acquired image data, thereby notifying a user of mobile phone 100-1 of acquiring data by data communication during voice communication.

  • Patent number: 7561546
Abstract: A silent measurement period (SMP) for a selected channel in an allowable channel set (ACS) of the access point (AP) is set. During the SMP, the AP does not serve wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) within its coverage area and reserves its channels for other BSSs. A normal operating channel of the AP is changed to the selected channel upon initialization of the SMP. Characteristics of the selected channel is measured during the SMP. The operating channel of the AP is changed back to the normal operating channel when the duration of the SMP expires.

  • Patent number: 7558576
Abstract: At least one embodiment of the invention provides an automated frequency offset compensation method, system, and apparatus that improves throughput between one or more wireless communication devices by compensating for frequency offsets caused by a Doppler effect. In particular, one implementation estimates the frequency offset and uses this to compensate the carrier signal power to interference power ratio (C/I) when the transmitting and receiving devices are moving relative to each other such that a Doppler effect creates a frequency offset in the perceived frequency of the received carrier signal.

  • Patent number: 7558557
Abstract: A data collection network supporting roaming terminals which may enter and exit a sleep mode to conserve power. A plurality of base stations each periodically transmit pending message indications to those roaming data collection terminals within range. Instead of requiring the transceiver within each terminal to always be active, the receiver is activated in synchrony with the transmissions of pending message indications from at least one of the base stations. Otherwise, the terminal may deactivate the transceiver (i.e., place it in a sleep state). The terminal may also sleep through pluralities of transmissions of pending message indications, and, thereafter, awake in synchrony to receive subsequent pending message indications. To minimize noise, the terminal may operate using a lower frequency system clock when not collecting data. When collecting data, especially where processing time proves critical, the system clock frequency is increased.

  • Patent number: 7555302
Abstract: A novel and improved method and system for paging a cellular telephone or other wireless terminal using two paging channels that reduces standby mode power consumption described. In one embodiment of the invention, a minimally encoded quick paging channel is established over which short, quick page messages are transmitted during one of a set of quick paging slots. The quick page message indicates that a communications request has been received, and that the receiving communication terminals should process a highly encoded full paging channel over which more detailed, full page messages are transmitted during the next full paging slot. A terminal monitors full paging channel only after a quick page message has been received on the quick paging channel.
