Patent number: 6975518Abstract: An electronic assembly includes one or more conductive clamps (302, 304, FIG. 3), which are used to supply current to an integrated circuit (IC) package (308). The conductive clamps are attached to a printed circuit (PC) board (312), which supplies the current to the IC package over one clamp, and receives returned current from the IC package over another clamp. Each clamp contacts a contact pad (330) on the surface of the PC board, and contacts another contact pad (334) on the top surface of the IC package. Vias (338, 339) and conductive planes (340, 342) within the package then carry current to and from an IC (e.g., IC 306) connected to the package. In another embodiment, the clamp (904, FIG. 9) holds a conductive structure (902) in place between the PC board contact pad (908) and the IC package contact pad (914), and current is carried primarily over the conductive structure, rather than over the clamp.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2003Date of Patent: December 13, 2005Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Kristopher Frutschy, Glenn E. Patent number: 6972961Abstract: The invention is related to methods and apparatus for inserting and/or holding electronic modules into equipment racks. For example, the electronic module can correspond to a power supply, and the equipment rack can correspond to a shelf for a standardized equipment rack. One embodiment includes a handle that is movable from a first position to a second position. A power supply is inserted into an equipment rack with a handle in a first position. The first position of the handle permits partial insertion of the power supply, thereby permitting electrical connection of pre-charge contacts. The handle is then moved to a second position, thereby pulling in the power supply and permitting regular power contacts to make an electrical connection. One embodiment further includes a tongue and groove arrangement to prevent vertical displacement of an electronic module.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2003Date of Patent: December 6, 2005Assignee: POWER-ONE, Inc.Inventor: Terry Lee Erskine

Patent number: 6944029Abstract: An electrical circuit pack ejector system provides a preemptive warning to the circuit pack that allows redirection and disabling of circuit pack functionality prior to ejection and subsequent disconnection of power and input/output signal contacts. The ejector system is based on proximity detection that measures the distance between a Hall-effect sensor and a magnet affixed to an ejector arm. The magnetic field strength increases as the magnet approaches the sensor. Once the sensor threshold is reached, a logical bit from the sensor is flipped and a positive ejector engagement is surmised. As the ejector arm rotates away from the sensor, the magnetic field strength around the sensor is reduced. Once the sensor threshold is reached, a logical bit from the sensor is flipped and a negative ejector engagement is surmised. The circuit pack then redirects and disables functions prior to the power and signal connectors physical disengagement.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2003Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: CienaInventors: John Robert Marcolina, Charles Matthew Erwin
