    Abstract: This invention relates to the discovery that toxicity to mustard may be euated by diagnostic test means disclosed herein. Upon electrophoretic separation (sodium dodocyl sulfate polyacryl-amide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)) of buffered extract of human skin cells (normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK)) which had been exposed to mustard-type chemical compounds a band at approximately 50,000 to 80,000 daltons molecular weight was found. The protein band constitutes a biomarker. The marker protein can be used either to raise protective antibodies to protect against the protease or may be used in a kit for identifying presence or absence of the marker in study of tissues taken from individuals who may have been exposed to mustard poisoning.

    Abstract: The present invention provides methods for isolating biological target materials, particularly nucleic acids, such as DNA or RNA or hybrid molecules of DNA and RNA, from other substances in a medium using silica magnetic particles. The methods of the present invention involve forming a complex of the silica magnetic particles and the biological target material in a mixture of the medium and particles, separating the complex from the mixture using external magnetic force, and eluting the biological target material from the complex. The preferred embodiments of magnetic silica particles used in the methods and kits of the present invention are capable of forming a complex with at least 2 .mu.g of biological target material per milligram of particle, and of releasing at least 60% of the material from the complex in the elution step of the method.

Flow cytometric measurements are used to classify, in real-time, beads within an exposed beadset and textual explanations, based on the accumulated data obtained during real-time analysis, are generated for the user. The inventive technology enables the simultaneous, and automated, detection and interpretation of multiple biomolecules or DNA sequences in real-time while also reducing the cost of performing diagnostic and genetic assays.

    Abstract: A process for the treatment of brass components to reduce leachable lead therefrom when the component is exposed to water in which the brass component is first treated with an aqueous caustic solution to remove some of the leachable lead therefrom. Thereafter, the brass component is leached to remove excess caustic and then contacted with a water soluble carboxylic acid to remove most of the remaining leachable lead. It has been found that the efficiency of the process can be significantly enhanced through the use of ultrasonic agitation to ensure intimate contact between the treating solutions and the brass component. In the practice of the invention, the amount of lead removed is sufficient to meet the most stringent regulatory requirements for water quality.
