Abstract: According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a method to configure a network of classifiers includes configuring a plurality of classifiers in a network of classifiers, such that the configuring associates a plurality of operating points with each output branch, associating a different quality profile with each output point for each output branch in the plurality of classifiers, and storing the configured network of classifiers and quality profile associations in the computer system to be used for classifying future input data according to the network configuration and quality profile association. Each classifier comprises executable code that classifies the data. Each of said classifiers has a plurality of the output branches that each output the data to another classifier. Each operating point comprises a probability of determining that a data item input to the classifier has a particular characteristic and a probability that said determination falsely detected the characteristic.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for generating a display of document clusters is described. Clusters of documents are presented in a multi-dimensional concept space. At least one document is selected from a collection of documents to be clusters. An angle ? of the document relative to a common origin of the multi-dimensional concept space is computed. The selected document is compared with each of the clusters. An angle ? from the common origin is determined for each cluster. A difference between the angle ? for the document and the angle ? for the cluster is determined. The difference is compared to the variance, and a new cluster is created when the difference exceeds the variance for all the clusters.

Abstract: Described are techniques for use in controlling information about a data storage system returned to an end user. A first set of information is sent from a first recipient location included in a hierarchy to a second recipient location included in the hierarchy. At the second recipient location, a second set of information is produced using information control criteria of said second recipient location. The second set of information is sent from the second recipient location to a component used to manage the data storage system.

Abstract: Storing historical/previous values of a field of a relational database in the same table. The previous values can be conveniently used to revert back to any of such previously stored values. Thus, for each update/modify operation, the present value is stored as a previous value. In one embodiment, the previous values are stored in a VARRAY associated with each field. The indexed entries of the VARRAY store the present as well as previous values of the field.

Abstract: A method for determining a value indicator in a broker-mediated geospatial information service environment includes receiving feedback data at a first system of the broker-mediated geospatial information service environment. In particular, the feedback data is received from a plurality of respondents, and relates to a broker-mediated geospatial information service provided to each respondent of the plurality of respondents. Furthermore, each respondent of the plurality of respondents is a prior requestor of a process-dataset solution for performing the broker-mediated geospatial information service. Based on the feedback data, a value indicator relating to the process-dataset solution is determined.

Abstract: A method in one embodiment includes receiving a data identifier (ID) associated with each of a plurality of files from multiple data providers; storing the data ID associated with each of the plurality of files to a database; identifying any duplicate data IDs in the database to determine if any of the plurality of files associated with the data IDs are non-confidential; querying one of the data providers which provided the file having the duplicate data ID to determine; receiving a response from the data provider indicating whether or not to store the file having the duplicate data ID to the storage network; receiving one of the files having a duplicate data ID from the data provider; storing the file having the duplicate data ID to the storage network; and causing deletion of the file having the duplicate data ID that is stored to the storage network.

Abstract: Inverse search systems and methods operate on identifiers of content items in a corpus such as the World Wide Web In an inverse search, the user submits a query that includes an identifier of a target content item in the corpus and receives information (metadata) about the target content item being returned to the user. Many types of metadata can be returned, including ratings or other metadata related to the target content item obtained from users, popularity data specific to the target content item, information about previously submitted forward search queries that led to the target content item being identified as a hit, and metadata extracted from the target content item.

Abstract: There is provided a method for making a rich web application searchable, one embodiment comprising providing companion content in a format searchable by a web search engine, loading the companion content in a web browser, calling a rich web application using the companion content, loading the rich web application in the web browser, and launching a data bridge interfacing the rich web application and the companion content. The method may further comprise retrieving a data feed for the rich web application, located in the companion content. In one embodiment, a system configured to make a rich web application searchable comprises a content storage, companion content in a format searchable by a web search engine, a data feed for the rich web application included in the companion content, and a data bridge interfacing the rich web application with the companion content.

Abstract: A system highlights search terms in documents distributed over a network. The system generates a search query that includes a search term and, in response to the search query, receives a list of one or more references to documents in the network. The system receives selection of one of the references and retrieves a document that corresponds to the selected reference. The system then highlights the search term in the retrieved document.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method and system for removing rows from directory tables. In accordance with a particular embodiment of the present disclosure, an image copy of at least a portion of a database directory table is created. A plurality of candidate rows to delete from the directory table is identified by comparing each row of the portion of the database directory table against one or more deletion criteria. An updated image copy is established by deleting the plurality of candidate rows from the image copy.

Abstract: Provided are a dividing unit for dividing a search job into a first division job for performing search processing on an internal memory table and a second division job for performing search processing on an external memory table, a searching unit for executing the search processing of the first division job and the search processing of the second division job, that were obtained by the dividing performed by the dividing unit, in concurrent, and a terminating unit for, in accordance with a designated search mode, if searching in one of the first division job and the second division job terminates, terminating searching in the other of the division jobs.

Abstract: Recovering from a failure of a soon-to-fail database system among a plurality of database systems in a multi-database system in processing a request submitted to the multi-database system through a multi-database system session is accomplished. A query band is created for the request. The query band is defined to be an identifier that uniquely identifies the session and the request among the plurality of sessions and plurality of requests being processed by the multi-database system at the time that the request was submitted. The query band is attached to a transaction issued by the multi-database system to the soon-to-fail database system to execute the query. The status concerning execution of the transaction is reported by the soon-to-fail database system. The status includes the query band. The status is logged. The failure of the soon-to-fail database system is detected.

Abstract: A method and system is provided for associating external content with a digital image. Aspects of the method and system include extracting metadata from the digital image; using the extracted metadata to query an online content server to retrieve content related to the digital image through at least one attribute of the extracted metadata; in response to receiving the content returned by the content server, associating the content with the digital image; and using the content when an operation is performed on the digital image.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for retrieving metadata relating to a multi-function device. In some embodiments, metadata is retrieved using a plurality of identifiers (e.g., hardware identifiers each identifying at least one function performed by the device) received from the device. The plurality of identifiers are arranged into a sequence, and at least one of the identifiers in the sequence is associated with metadata specifying a characteristic of the device. Using the metadata that is retrieved, a client computer may present an graphical user interface displaying information relating to the device.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for filtering data network content using categorized filtering parameters. Filtering parameters (e.g., regular expressions) are categorized and stored in a database accessible by a plurality of users. A user may receive one or more categories of filtering parameters from the database, and then use the categorized filtering parameters to filter content received from a data network. A user may also contribute developed categorized filtering parameters to the database. In one advantageous embodiment, the filtering parameters are designed to filter out advertising content. In such an embodiment, the received content comprises advertising and is filtered using the categorized filtering parameters. A webpage is then rendered using the filtered content such that at least a portion of the advertising is not displayed in the webpage.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing shared resources in a clustered database management system is provided. In an embodiment, multiple master nodes exist in a database management system. A master node receives a lock request from a second node. The lock request is a request for a lock on a shared resource. The master node grants the lock request to the second node. While the second node holds the lock, the second node causes the master node to modify the shared resource.

Abstract: A system and method for allowing flexible and simultaneous updates to database objects from one or more users is disclosed. The system may receive a change request to the object from the first user and then from a second user. The system may determine if the object is locked and, if so, informing the first user. If an edit request is received from the second user, the second user may be provided with multiple options, such as incorporating changes made by first user and overwriting changes made by second user with changes made by first user, incorporating changes made by first user and overwriting changes made by first user with changes made by second user, and cancelling changes made by second user.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method for synthetic backups may include identifying a full backup of a volume of files. The computer-implemented method may also include identifying a set of incremental backups that were performed subsequently to the full backup. The computer-implemented method may further include identifying a set of storage devices that store the full backup and the set of incremental backups. The computer-implemented method may additionally include identifying a request to create a synthetic backup incorporating the full backup and the set of incremental backups. The computer-implemented method may moreover include generating a sorted catalog for the synthetic backup by indexing files for the synthetic backup in an order based on at least one characteristic of the files.

Abstract: A facility for initiating a purchase is described. The facility receives a text sequence captured by a user from a rendered document using a handheld text capture device. The facility identifies in the received text sequence a reference to a distinguished product. In response to identifying the reference, the facility presents to the user an opportunity to place an order for the established product. If the user accepts the presented opportunity to order the distinct product, the facility orders the distinct product on behalf of the user.

Abstract: Content identifiers are associated with respective metadata. Through use of the metadata, a user's experience with the content can be enhanced. A variety of other arrangements are also detailed.
