  • Patent number: 5460460
Abstract: A dock leveler scissors lift system mounted in a pit having back and side walls. The scissors lift mechanism comprises first and second scissors arms mounted on a base frame, one of the arms pinned to the base for pivotal movement and the other of the arms is free to move relative to said base. Hydraulics are employed to raise scissors lift. The scissors lift mechanism further comprises an upper frame having a generally horizontal deck portion. Retractable pins are used to couple said scissors lift mechanism to the pit in the fully raised position. The a dock leveler deck assembly is pivotally mounted to the generally horizontal deck portion of the scissor lift mechanism, and hydraulics coupled to the scissors lift mechanism raises the deck assembly. • Patent number: 5459961
Abstract: A capsule for treating a tree or other wooden element is disclosed as including a head element having a shank portion with an internal cavity containing a chemical agent. The internal cavity is sealed by a plug in an end of the shank portion remote from the head element. The head element, shank portion, chemical agent and plug form a self-contained unit which is inserted into a pre-drilled or pre-punched hole in the tree or other wooden element. The shank portion is made of a frangible material so that upon breaking as a result of an impact force applied to the head element, the chemical agent is free to be absorbed into the tree or other wooden element.

  • Patent number: 5460223
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for recovering oil from a oil bearing formation having a mixture of oil and water. A first borehole and a second borehole are formed in oil bearing .formation and extend in a horizontal direction. The first borehole is disposed below the second borehole. Seismic waves are generated in the oil bearing formation to reorganize the mixture into oil and water to promote flow of the oil to the second borehole, the seismic waves emanating from the first borehole. The oil is then recovered from the second borehole.

  • Patent number: 5459960
Abstract: A nursery container that provides an improved root structure for plants intended to be transplanted into the ground. This container is characterized by a base that is constructed to direct initial root growth towards an elevated opening that is centrally located in the base. It is through this opening where initial root growth is air pruned thus encouraging the early development of secondary lateral roots. The base design also serves to aerate the growing medium in the center of the container thus aiding in the reduction of medium compacting and drainage. This container is also characterized by a plurality of vertical indentations that protrude towards the periphery of the container, each one being open at the bottom. Because of these indentations the root tips are encouraged to grow down towards the openings for air pruning thus continuing the development of lateral roots. The indentations also serve to aerate the growing medium in the sidewall area.

  • Patent number: 5460231
Abstract: A device for augering a conical hole in a solid medium that includes a first elongated member that extends along a longitudinal axis and a cutting blade having a cutting section and a non-cutting section coupled to the first elongated member. The rod is adapted to be rotated about the longitudinal axis. A motor is coupled to the first elongated member which rotates the cutting blade about the longitudinal axis. A shroud is provided through which the first elongated member passes. The shroud attaches to a hydraulic unit. Activation of the hydraulic unit causes the first elongated member to move in a longitudinal direction, which causes the cutting blade to move in a radial direction thereby forming a conical hole in a solid medium. The device is used for forming holes used in foundations and anchors. Also disclosed is a method of operation of the device to form a conical hole in solid media.

  • Patent number: 5457946
Abstract: A grass catching attachment for use with a rotary lawn mower is disclosed. The attachment includes a flexible bag which has been adapted to expand the capacity of a rigid, grass catching receptacle frequently employed by commercial landscapers during mowing operations. The bag is fabricated from a number of specially shaped panels of durable fabric sewn together to form an elongated envelope having a generally curved configuration. The top and bottom panels of the bag include a narrowed and rearwardmost terminus positioned outside a rearward projection of either of the top or bottom panel's front edge thus allowing the distal end of the bag to be suspended directly beneath at least one of the mower handlebars. A rigid frame having a peripheral channel for engagement with brackets extending from the grass catching receptacle as well as for the receipt of a drawstring sewn into the flexible bag is provided for joining the bag and the rigid receptacle.

  • Patent number: 5457838
Abstract: A dock leveler for providing a bridge into the rear end of a truck trailer over which a fork vehicle can travel in loading the truck trailer. The dock leveler includes a ramp with a rear section and an extendible forward section. The forward section telescopically extends from and retracts into the rear section under power from a hydraulic cylinder. The forward section can be locked in place to prevent retraction of said forward section relative to said rear section under the traction developed by the drive wheels of a fork vehicle as the fork vehicle travels over the dock leveler. • Patent number: 5457839
Abstract: A reduced-weight bridge deck having a plurality of areas which are void of concrete to provide a lower dead load force and to reduce the product costs. The bridge deck includes structural support bars, post-tensioning ducts and a concrete component. Concrete component has spaced downwardly projecting protrusions which laterally distribute forces and permit the ability of providing areas void of concrete therebetween. The post-tensioning ducts are located within and extend through the downwardly projecting protrusions. The strength of deck is achieved by placing the tendons within the ducts. The tendons are tightened and anchored to the ends of the deck to prestress the concrete component. The unique section design and the post-tensioning eliminates the need for reinforcing bars which can deteriorate and contribute to structural failures. Methods for manufacturing the bridge deck from precast panels and by cast-in-place sections are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5458198
Abstract: An oil or gas well cleaning method includes inserting tubing, such as a coiled tubing, into a well bore, for example, into a production pipe in a well bore. A cleaning fluid containing a flocculant is passed into the well and the flocculant in the cleaning fluid is mixed with solid particles in the well bore to flocculate the particles. The cleaning fluid and the flocculated particles are then removed from the well. In one embodiment, the cleaning fluid containing the flocculant is discharged from the lower end of the tubing into the well, and the cleaning fluid with the flocculated particles is removed from the well via the production pipe. Alternatively, the cleaning fluid containing the flocculant may be introduced into the well through the production pipe, and the cleaning fluid with the flocculated particles may be removed via the tubing. The flocculant may also serve as a friction reducer to reduce friction between the cleaning fluid, the solids, the production pipe, and the tubing.

  • Patent number: 5456314
Abstract: A seal for a wellhead housing employs a locking groove. The seal is of a U-shape, having an inner and outer radially spaced apart legs. An energizing ring is stroked downward to force the legs apart to cause them to seal between the wellhead housing in the conduit and the wellhead housing. At least one groove is located on one side of the energizing ring, with the groove being of a saw-toothed shape to allow entry but to resist upward movement of the energizing ring. In a metal version of a seal, the groove is located on the exterior of the energizing ring so as to allow some axial movement of the inner leg of the seal relative to the energizing ring. In a second version, the seal is of plastic.

  • Patent number: 5456547
Abstract: A machine and method of use to form Sonic Noise Alert Pattern (SNAP) type depressions in the surface of an asphalt road in a series to line the edge or center of a road. The machine installs a plurality of depressions in a group during a single cutting procedure. A repetition of these cutting procedures results in the desired series being formed. The machine has a single rotary type milling head with spaced sets of bits which will engage the surface of the road. Only where the spaced sets contact the surface will the cutting action be performed. From a stationary position an initial plunge cut brings the rotary cutting head in contact with the surface. Then a lateral movement of the rotary cutting head results in elongating and forming the desired sized depressions. Then the rotary cutting head is raised, the machine is advanced and the prior steps are repeated in repetition until the desired number of depressions have been formed.
