  • Patent number: 5626180
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and devices for casting components in metal alloys on the tilt casting principle in which a quantity of melt metered for casting is spread over a large gate cross section without turbulence from a melt container of the mould (30) into the mould (31) by rotating the casting device. To prevent the formation of oxide and weak structural points, the melt is taken from a metering furnace under a protective gas in a melt container connected to the mould and taken thence into the mould also under a protective gas. The melt hardens there under increased gas pressure on the feeder region of the casting, whereby its properties such as fine-grained, dense structure, high stability under load and accurately dimensioned surfaces are considerably improved.

  • Patent number: 5615731
Abstract: In the case of a continuous casting mould for a double T-shaped preliminary section comprising a mould cavity cross-section which is composed of two flange parts (4, 4') and a web part (5) firstly sticking of the billet in the mould is to be prevented and secondly simplified mould production is to be indicated. Furthermore it should be possible to produce sections of this type in tubular moulds, with high casting speed and high billet quality such that their dimensions are as close as possible to the final dimensions. To this end it is proposed that the mould cavity (3) be provided at the mould end on the pouring-in side, on both sides along the web (5) in each case with a cross-sectional enlargement, in the form of bulges (8), with respect to the identical mould cavity portion (7) at the mould end on the billet outlet side.

  • Patent number: 5613546
Abstract: A casting roll for continuous casting of metals. The roll comprising a core (2) and a sleeve (3), coaxially arranged one with respect to the other. The sleeve is axially coupled to the core by a inward projection (33) on the sleeve which abuts a shoulder (24) on the projection. The projection and the shoulder are located in a plane (P) substantially median with respect to the roll. The sleeve is radially centered on the core by flanges (5) and (6) which are elastically coupled together. The flanges and sleeve have relieved surfaces (37) which allow the sleeve to expand axially without bowing. The invention is particularly well suited for continuous casting thin metallic strips, especially steel strips, between two of these casting rolls.

  • Patent number: 5584335
Abstract: A side dam assembly for a continuous casting apparatus for continuously casting thin steel strips between casting rolls. The side dam assembly has a side dam for bearing directly against the rolls of the casting apparatus for preventing leakage of molten metal therebetween. The side dam is attached by a pair of belts to an insulating refractory plate which is carried by a cooled panel. To allow axial motion, one of the belts is not rigidly affixed to either the insulating refractory plate or the side dam. The cooled panel is carried by a thrust plate and is urged toward the rolls by biasing elements which preferably comprise a plurality of pistons urged outwardly from the thrust plate by springs. Preferably, the biasing elements are constructed and arranged so that they are distributed over a zone of shape corresponding to that of the side dam and are capable of exerting on the side dam thrust forces independently of one another.

  • Patent number: 5566742
Abstract: A core 10 made of a synthetic resin is set in dies, and the dies are filled with a molten metal. The molten metal is cooled by the dies, whereby a cast product 12 including the synthetic resin core 10 is obtained. Totally heating the cast product 12, a projecting portion 10a of the synthetic resin core 10 is caught and pulled, whereby the synthetic resin core 10 is drawn in a semi-molten state out of the cast product 12.

  • Patent number: 5564490
Abstract: A quench substrate for rapid solidification of molten alloy into strip has a microcrystalline or amorphous structure. The substrate is composed of a thermally conducting alloy and the structure is substantially homogeneous. The substrate is a thermal conducting material such as copper or a copper alloy, and has a constituent grain size uniformity greater than 1 .mu.m and less than 1,000 .mu.m in size.

  • Patent number: 5524704
Abstract: The subject of the invention is a process for the continuous casting of very small-diameter wires directly from liquid metal, according to which said liquid metal is made to flow out of a heated and pressurized container made of refractory material, forming a jet of liquid. metal having a diameter equal to or slightly greater than that of the wire to be cast, and said jet is made to solidify by making it penetrate into a layer of moving cooling liquid deposited on the internal wall of a drum rotating about a horizontal axis, wherein said container is fed, continuously or intermittently, with solid metal without interrupting casting and wherein said solid metal is melted inside said container. The subject of the invention is also a device for the continuous casting of very small-diameter wires directly from liquid metal, allowing this process to be implemented.

  • Patent number: 5515903
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making molds for use in injection molding wherein a cement replica is made of a pattern by curing the cement in a silicon rubber negative of the pattern, then pouring molten zinc or zinc alloy into a frame containing the cement replica. The cooling of the mold metal is controlled by the direct application of flame and frequent adjustments of clamps which firmly contact the mold to a solid surface.
