Patent number: 6574214Abstract: In a mobile communication system having mobile foreign agents, the present invention eliminates the use of multiple source/destination headers attached to an information packet during the tunneling operation by using either a decapsulation/encapsulation or a forwarding operation with the encapsulated information packet. Either of these operations reduces the overhead incurred in the multiple encapsulation headers by reducing encapsulation of the information packet to a single level. Upon receipt of the information packet at the foreign agent on the communications system, the information packet is directed to the mobile node using a routing chain table maintained by the foreign agent or a next hop routing table maintained by the foreign agent and each mobile foreign agent in the transmission path. Once implemented, these data structures can also assist with routing of information packets within the foreign subnetwork.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2000Date of Patent: June 3, 2003Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Mohamed Khalil, Emad A. Patent number: 6567657Abstract: A method and system for automatically adjusting charges to a pre-paid account in a telecommunications or distributed processing network following a failure in the network. After a service that is chargeable against the pre-paid account is initiated in the network, a failure in the network is detected. The failure prevents a charging node from receiving event data relating to the pre-paid account. After recovery from the failure, a message is sent to the charging node containing service status information. The charging node adjusts the account balance in accordance with the service status information.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1999Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M EricssonInventors: Gerald Holly, Akilan Tiburtius, Arturo Vega, Hanh Duy Vo, Nadia Bishai, Jacques Bugnon, David Strickland

Patent number: 6519458Abstract: A wireless data transport method, and a mobile terminal and an interworking function (IWF) device therefor. In the wireless data transport method performed using a mobile terminal, an IWF device and a server, a dialing is performed in the mobile terminal using a predetermined command with an identifier including an IP (Internet Protocol) address, and then RLP (Radio Link Protocol) between the mobile terminal and the IWF device is synchronized to establish a circuit-switched data (CSD) channel according to the command. Then, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol)/TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is performed in the IWF device according to the identifier, and a network interface channel is then opened by an AT (ATtention) processing unit of the IWF device according to the IP address of the identifier. Therefore, the mobile terminal can be connected directly to a network interface which is an Internet connect port, using a CSD channel which is preferred by network service providers, not using a modem.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1999Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kang-hwan Oh, Sang-seo Lee

Patent number: 6519472Abstract: A method and apparatus for passively monitoring communications in a trunked communication system. Digital messages transmitted over a control channel at a particular frequency are monitored with a receiver. Transmitted communication signals are demodulated and stored. The stored signals are tested to identify messages and to extract talk group and channel assignment codes. If the talk group is a talk group of interest, the receiver is tuned to the frequency corresponding to the channel assignment code so that voice communications are monitored. The receiver is tuned to the control channel after each voice communication so that a communication including multiple transmissions on different frequencies is coherently monitored by retuning the receiver in accordance with the received channel assignment codes. In an alternative embodiment, separate receivers are provided for the control channel and for voice communications.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1999Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Inventors: Terence Brennan, Terence Sean Sullivan

Patent number: 6480713Abstract: The present invention is essentially a method and system for leaving and retrieving messages at specific coordinate way points within a commercial mobile radio service (CMRS) provider network. Users carry or transport interface devices for communicating over the network and are able to record and view messages at specific coordinate locations while traveling in the network. The location of the device is calculated by the device or by the network while the device is powered on and in within the physical boundaries of the network, or through a combination of both. Messages can be made available to network subscribers when their interface devices come within an area centered about a physical coordinate location. Personalized messages can also be left by subscribers at any coordinate point within the boundaries of the network. The invention can also be used to facilitate access of information about an asset when a technician comes within a physical proximity threshold relative to said asset.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2002Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: Xybernaut CorporationInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 6452940Abstract: The present invention describes a method of migrating a mobile station, operating within an integrated D-AMPS/EDGE wireless telecommunication network, from the D-AMPS packet portion of the network to the EDGE/GPRS packet portion of the network. The technique includes accessing the control channels of both the D-AMPS and EDGE networks in order to obtain the necessary timing advance and packet transfer identifier for use with the GPRS packet system. In an embodiment of the invention, the MS makes a first access on a D-AMPS control channel to obtain a pointer to a reserved radio block on an EDGE packet control channel. The MS makes a second access on the EDGE control channel as specified by the reserved radio block which contains a particular frequency and timeslot location. The MS then sends a series of shortened bursts to the network such that a Timing Advance Index (TAI) value is calculated from the bursts and sent back to the MS.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Marlene Yared, Sara Mazur, Jan Lindskog

Patent number: 6442378Abstract: A power level determination device provides an output voltage usable as a specific reference power level corresponding to each RF input power level. The device includes a peak detector, which detects a pulse-type signal at its input and provides a non-pulse-type signal at its output. N comparators are provided, where N is an integer. Each of the N comparators has an output, a first input coupled to the output of the peak detector, and a second input coupled to a respectively different threshold voltage. The first one of the N comparators has a maximum threshold voltage. The threshold voltages decrease monotonically from No. 1 to No. N. N exclusive-OR components are provided. Patent number: 6434384Abstract: A satellite broadcast system and method, particularly useful for television signals, allows for local as well as nationwide broadcast service by allocating greater satellite resources to the more important local service areas. This is accomplished by broadcasting a non-uniform pattern of local service beams and designing the system to establish different service area priorities through factors such as the individual beam powers, sizes, roll-off characteristics and peak-to-edge power differentials. Frequency reuse is enhanced by permitting a certain degree of cross-beam interference, with lower levels of interference established for the more important service areas.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1998Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: John L.
