Abstract: An internal combustion engine can include a piston moving in a cylinder and a junk head disposed opposite the piston head in the cylinder. The junk head can optionally be moveable between a higher compression ratio position closer to a top dead center of the piston and a lower compression ratio position further from the top dead center position of the piston. At least one intake port can deliver a fluid comprising inlet air to a combustion chamber within the cylinder. Combustion gases can be directed out of the combustion volume through at least one exhaust port. One or both of the intake port and the exhaust port can be opened and closed by operation of a sleeve valve that at least partially encircles the piston. Related articles, systems, and methods are described.

  • Patent number: 9638157
Abstract: A quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator for producing corona discharge plasma from is presented. The quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator has a folded cavity made of opposing concentric cavity members that are nested together to form a continuous cavity ending in a aperture. A center conductor with a tip is positioned in the cavity. The folded cavity advantageously permits the coaxial cavity resonator to resonate at a lower operating frequency than an unfolded quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator of the same length. Embodiments of the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator use narrower apertures to reduce radiative losses, and include center conductors that are reactive load elements, such as helical coils. When a radio frequency (RF) oscillation is produced in the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator, corona discharge plasma is formed at the tip of the center conductor. The corona discharge plasma can be used to ignite combustible materials in combustion chambers of combustion engines.

  • Patent number: 9624842
Abstract: A method and device for determining a value for a valve lift of a valve of an individual cylinder of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine are provided. The method includes determining a first exhaust-gas lambda value for fuel combustion in the individual cylinder in a first operating state of the engine by a cylinder-individual and time-resolved detection of lambda values without an artificial variation in an air/fuel ratio. The method also includes determining an air mass sucked in by all cylinders of the engine in the first operating state. The method also includes determining the value for the valve lift of the valve of the individual cylinder based on the first exhaust-gas lambda value, the determined air mass, and a correction value, wherein the correction value is based on a relationship between the valve lift and an associated air mass sucked in by all cylinders of the engine.

  • Patent number: 9567967
Abstract: An auxiliary current amount that is used in an auxiliary that is mounted in a vehicle is calculated. A stop time ratio of the vehicle is calculated based on a running history of the vehicle, and an estimated stop time of the vehicle that is estimated based on the stop time ratio is calculated. An SOC threshold is set based on an estimated consumption current amount that is obtained from the estimated stop time and the auxiliary current amount. A generator that is mounted in the vehicle is operated such that a value of a storage state of the battery recovers to become larger than the SOC threshold when the value of the storage state of the battery is smaller than the SOC threshold.

  • Patent number: 9551315
Abstract: An apparatus and method for igniting combustible materials in a combustion chamber of a combustion engine using corona discharge plasma from a quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator. A tapered quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator is adapted to mate with the combustion chamber. The quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator is coupled with an energy shaping means, or waveform generator, that develops the appropriate waveform for triggering radio frequency oscillations in the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator. A loop coupling is angularly positioned within the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator to match impedances between the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator and the energy shaping means, or waveform generator. Radio frequency oscillations produce a standing wave in the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator and a corona discharge plasma develops near the center conductor.

  • Patent number: 9512800
Abstract: A valve assembly suitable for use as an inlet metering valve of a fuel injection system comprises an inlet opening, an outlet aperture, and a valve element arranged to control fluid flow between the inlet opening and the outlet aperture. The valve element is moveable in response to an applied control signal to a closed position and to a fully-open position, and is biased to return to a rest position when the control signal is absent. When the valve element is in the rest position, fluid flow between the inlet opening and the outlet aperture is permitted at a relatively low rate. When the valve element is in the closed position, fluid flow between the inlet opening and the outlet aperture is substantially prevented. When the valve element is in the fully-open position, fluid flow between the inlet opening and the outlet aperture is permitted at a relatively high rate.

  • Patent number: 9506412
Abstract: It is an object of this invention to restrain blow-by gas from reaching a catalyst during fuel cutoff, and protect the catalyst while coping with an increase in oil dilution amount resulting from the use of alcohol fuel, in an internal combustion engine that uses the alcohol fuel. An engine is equipped with a PCV mechanism that introduces blow-by gas in a crankcase into an intake system. Besides, when fuel cutoff is executed with the PCV mechanism in operation, an opening degree of a throttle valve during fuel cutoff is set on the basis of an oil dilution amount in lubricating oil. Thus, the throttle opening degree during fuel cutoff is adjusted in accordance with a generation amount of blow-by gas, so that an intake negative pressure can be appropriately reduced. Accordingly, during fuel cutoff, the amount of blow-by gas that is sucked out from the crankcase due to the intake negative pressure and introduced into the intake system can be held small.

  • Patent number: 9494098
Abstract: Although a method for changing a combustion method taking place in an internal combustion engine depending on running condition is proposed, it can be considered that conditions under which a combustion noise occurs naturally differ with different methods. A detection method of prior art is not compatible with different combustion methods and the accuracy of combustion noise detection was low. Accurate combustion noise detection is enabled by identifying a combustion mode taking place in the internal combustion engine, selecting a sensed frequency or frequency band of a combustion noise sensor that detects a combustion noise in a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine according to the combustion mode, and detecting a combustion noise.

  • Patent number: 9453450
Abstract: A method of estimating a mass flow rate of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas includes sensing a mass flow rate of a flow of exhaust gas from the engine. A nitrogen oxides base concentration for when the engine is operating at a reference state is defined, and a nitrogen oxides ratio for a current operating state of the internal combustion engine is calculated. The mass flow rate of the flow of exhaust gas, the nitrogen oxides base concentration, and the nitrogen oxides ratio for the current operating state of the engine are multiplied together to define an estimated value of the current mass flow rate of nitrogen oxides in the flow of exhaust gas from the engine. The estimated value of the mass flow rate of nitrogen oxides may be compared to the output from a nitrogen oxides sensor to determine proper functionality of the nitrogen oxides sensor.
