  • Patent number: 4274600
Abstract: A method of grinding wood under pressurized conditions in a grinder according to which wood is fed in batches into a pressurized gas-filled grinding chamber provided with a rotary grinding means. The wood batches are fed through a feeding chamber provided with means for sequentially opening and pressure-tightly closing said feeding chamber from two sides in and respectively out of communication with the atmosphere and said grinding chamber respectively. The groundwood stock is discharged from the grinding chamber through a pressure lock formed by the groundwood stock. In this way feeding of the wood batches into the grinding chamber and the discharging of the groundwood stock out from said grinding chamber are carried out as sluicing steps, whereby a continuous pressure can be maintained in the grinding chamber in spite of feeding of new wood batches and discharging of groundwood stock.

  • Patent number: 4273398
Abstract: A unique method and apparatus for manufacturing gas-filled tubes utilizes an optically-spread beam of light to seal and cut short segments of tubing from a long tube containing the gas. Neither the laser beam nor the tubing is moved during the cutting and sealing operation. The gas being supplied to the length of tubing during the cutting and sealing operation is maintained at constant pressure so that each cut segment has the same resultant internal gas pressure. In one embodiment, radioactive light sources for illuminating displays and the like are manufactured by indexing a long phosphor-coated glass tube containing radioactive gas maintained at constant pressure, past a laser which generates an optically-spread light beam. The laser is activated in each index position of the tube to seal and cut short segments of the tubing with each segment having the same quantity of radioactive gas to provide the same desired quantity of illumination.

  • Patent number: 4272003
Abstract: A butt welding and burr shearing machine for metal rod, e.g., reinforce steel has opposed relatively slidable clamping devices (8, 9), which has positioning clamp (10) and pivotable clamp lever to clamp the rod by lever action. One of the clamping devices mounts split type shear dies by the positioning clamp and the clamp lever respectively. In the cutting position of the shear dies 21, 22 the rod F2 is not clamped by the clamping device 10 on which the shear dies are mounted.By a series of simple operations the rods to be jointed are loaded sideways, clamped by rotating clamp lever, and pressure butt welded, and bulge formed by welding process is sheared off. The completed rod is removed sideways.

  • Patent number: 4270583
Abstract: The specification discloses a method and related apparatus and cage assembly for spacing inner and outer concrete pipe reinforcing welded wire cages from one another through the use of a unique spacer bar. The spacer bar includes a plurality of links, each having a hook-shaped deviation therein, joined by a tie rod. The links are inserted through one of two cages until the tie rod abuts the cage and the hook deviations are then hooked over a longitudinal or circumferential wire or both in the other cage. • Patent number: 4270703
Abstract: A method of discharging groundwood stock when grinding wood under pressurized conditions in a grinding chamber, according to which the groundwood is suspended into stock and collected in a tank provided with an outflow for groundwood stock to atmospheric pressure. The surface of the stock in said tank is maintained at such a level above said outflow, that the stock in said tank forms a pressure lock in the communication between the grinding chamber and said outflow. In this way the discharging of the groundwood stock out from said grinding chamber is carried out as a sluicing step, whereby a continuous pressure can be maintained in the grinding chamber in spite of discharging of groundwood stock.

  • Patent number: 4270705
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to an improved liner assembly for the drum or shell of an ore grinding machine, comprising a first plurality of liner segments mounted directly to the shell and a second plurality of segments each of which is secured to one of the first segments independently of the shell. In the claimed embodiment, each of the first segments defines a longitudinal, axially extending channel that opens toward the center of the shell and has opposed inner surfaces that converge toward the shell center. The first segments are secured to the shell by nut and bolt assemblies that extend through the segment from the bottom of the channel and through the shell. The second segments are constructed for lengthwise insertion into the channel, and each has converging sides conforming to the channel sides for retention therein, while at the same time protectively overlying the nut and bolt assemblies during the grinding process.

  • Patent number: 4267624
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a cathode ray tube for colored television. A shadow mask is employed within the tube and is held in fixed position interiorly of the tube faceplate. The shadow mask is held in position by anchor pins positioned within the four corners of the faceplate. A method has been devised whereby the shadow mask is permitted a certain degree of flexibility, thus permitting the surface of the shadow mask to follow the curvature of the interior surface of the faceplate. The method encompasses fixing three of the shadow mask support points within the faceplate to define a reference plane, then gauging the distance from the established plane to the interior surface of the faceplate so that the fourth shadow mask support point can be positioned in its optimum position to minimize any errors in the distance between the surfaces of the shadow mask and the interior of the faceplate.

  • Patent number: 4268242
Abstract: An apparatus for instruction in the techniques of blow molding includes an air cylinder actuated ram parison extruder secured atop a frame carrying a low mass mold set. The mold set includes two thin wall mold segments mounted for reciprocal travel toward a closed position at a molding station. Each mold segment is adjustably secured to one of a pair of webbed, heat dissipating jaws with each jaw being adjustably mounted to a worm-driven carriage. Mold segment set up is accomplished by loosely mounting the jaws to their respective carriages and the mold segments to their jaws; the jaws are brought toward one another to close and align the mold segments. With the segments closed and registered, they are then tightened to the jaws and the jaws to the carriages thereby assuring repeated registration of the mold segments during molding cycles.

  • Patent number: 4266711
Abstract: A lock follower comprises two main parts, i.e. a central part and a cylindrical bearing part which are attached to each other. The central part is punched from a sheet-metal blank. The cylindrical bearing part partially surrounds the central part and has a slot through which a portion of the central part projects. The bearing part may comprise a piece of tubular material or alternatively a strip of material wound to cylindrical shape on a portion of the periphery of the central part. The two parts may be joined together by welding or by deformation of material belonging to either or both parts. The invention also concerns a method of manufacturing a lock follower of the above-mentioned kind, whereby for the cylindrical bearing part initially either a tubular piece of material or a piece of strip material is used.

  • Patent number: 4263701
Abstract: The cathode support of an indirectly heated cathode for picture tubes is commonly mounted in a ceramic disk by cold riveting. With sheet thicknesses below 0.1 mm, the support cracks during riveting. According to the invention, that portion of the support which projects beyond the ceramic disk is first rolled over by wobble-riveting, after which the support is braced by hot-pressing. This insures that the cathode support is securely held in place and prevents cracking.

  • Patent number: 4264029
Abstract: A compound material for temperatures up to about 1250.degree. C. or 1350.degree. C., respectively, and a method for producing the same, are disclosed, including a pair of joined layers one of which is a corrosion- and high-temperature-resistant alloy, the other layer consisting of a refractory material with high strength at high temperatures. The layer having the weaker mechanical strength at high temperatures is thinner than the other layer, the ratio of layer thickness preferably being between 1:5 and 1:2. A further alloy layer may be provided on the opposite side of the refractory layer, thereby to define a three-layer laminate. A thin layer of diffusion barrier material, such as platinum or palladium, may be provided between the refractory and alloy layers. The method for producing the laminate includes the step of detonating an explosive layer to exposively clad the alloy layer on to the refractory layer.
