Exemplary metal alloys and an anodization coating for such insulation are identified and may be selectively removed to provide shunt current paths. The coating for such insulation may be selectively removed to provide shunt current paths when the coil experiences a quench condition to preclude coil damage. Various applications of metallic insulation to superconducting coils are discussed.

    Abstract: An intense electrical discharge along the axis of a capillary having condensed phase (liquid or solid) walls produces a controlled transient plasma temperature of 10 million degrees Kelvin or more. In order to reach such a temperature, the capillary is formed with a suitably small diameter and a sufficiently large aspect ratio and the electrical discharge must have a suitably short risetime and a sufficient high intensity. In the preferred embodiment, the capillary walls comprise thermonuclear fusible material, the plasma temperature reaches at least 60 million degrees Kelvin, and the density-time product is sufficient to produce a useful thermonuclear fusion reaction. The ultra-high temperature capillary discharge can be used as a pulsed source of nuclear and/or x-ray radiation or as a pulsed nuclear fusion reactor.

The method of installation enables alignment and securement of the core barrel in the pressure vessel without need for an assembler to enter the area between the core barrel support plate and the bottom of the vessel.

    Abstract: The leaf springs mounted in the upper nozzle of a prior art fuel assembly, which are compressed by the upper core plate to restrain the upward movement of the fuel assembly under the pressure of upwardly-flowing coolant, as dispensed with. Instead the fuel assembly is permitted to rise in a controlled manner into engagement with the upper core-support plate. The lower nozzle is provided with snubbers which engage, and exert low pressure, as required by the specifications governing a reactor, on the lower core plates when the fuel assembly is raised into engagement with the upper core plate by the force of the flowing coolant. In addition springs are provided between the pins extending from the upper and lower core plates and the walls of the holes in the upper and lower nozzles to suppress vibration under the transverse forces impressed by the flowing coolant.

    Abstract: A resonant double loop radio frequency (rf) antenna for radiating high-power rf energy into a magnetically confined plasma. An inductive element in the form of a large current strap, forming the radiating element, is connected between two variable capacitors to form a resonant circuit. A real input impedance results from tapping into the resonant circuit along the inductive element, generally near the midpoint thereof. The impedance can be matched to the source impedance by adjusting the separate capacitors for a given tap arrangement or by keeping the two capacitances fixed and adjustng the tap position. This results in a substantial reduction in the voltage and current in the transmission system to the antenna compared to unmatched antennas. Because the complete circuit loop consisting of the two capacitors and the inductive element is resonant, current flows in the same direction along the entire length of the radiating element and is approximately equal in each branch of the circuit.

The device comprises, for each shaft, a base fixed to the top part of the reactor internals and coaxial with a shaft guide tube; several grippers or catches spaced apart about the axis of the base and mounted for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis towards a position into and out of engagement with a portion, having circumferential grooves, of the shaft contained in the tube; a slide movable axially on the base towards a top position where it causes engagement of the catches in a groove of the rod, and out of such position; and springs bearing on the base and tending to engage the catches on the shaft. The slide is dimensioned so as to be held by the corresponding sleeve projecting through the reactor vessel cover in a position sufficiently distant from the low position for the catches to be released, whatever the temperature in the reactor.

    Abstract: A demountable tokamak fusion reactor core in which a demountable central portion contains at least the inner toroidal field producing legs of the tokamak toroidal field coil and the plasma containment vessel. Also in the demountable central portion may be poloidal field coils and a means of heating the plasma or heating and shaping the plasma, e.g., an ohmic heating coil. The outer relatively permanent portion of the fusion reactor contains a blanket system within an opening formed by the current return legs of the toroidal field coil. Different embodiments of the ohmic heating coil could include a bucking cylinder toroidal magnet support. A reactor vessel and a dynamic tokamak support and tension suppressing system supports the tokamak.

A housing containing a check valve is located within the inner periphery of the manifold. The upper end of the housing has an opening in alignment with the opening in the manifold assembly, and seals are provided above and below the openings. The lower end of the housing is adapted for fluid communication with the inlet duct of the reactor core.

    Abstract: A nuclear reactor installation with a high temperture, gas cooled nuclear reactor supported in a cavity on a segmented bottom plate held by a centered point of fixation. The first heat exchangers of the primary circulation loop are arranged in the cavity around the nuclear reactor, with the associated first blowers being supported in first passages of the pressure vessel roof. The second heat exchanger for the removal of the decay heat are arranged similarly, with the associated second blowers located in passages of the pressure vessel bottom. The blowers are equipped with contactless magnetic bearings for the rotors. The drives of the core rods and the reflector rods are designed for a banking operation. Simultaneously, the side reflector is supported by means of radial supports on the thermal side shield elastically and secured against rotation. The measures described provide a simplified configuration without affecting safety.

    Abstract: A fluid system is disclosed as having a variable displacement fluid pump connected in a closed-loop circuit to a multi-pressure chamber fluid cylinder. The effective pressure responsive areas of two of the pressure chambers are equal such that when fluid at a selected rate of flow and at a predetermined pressure is communicated to one of the chambers, a force of a predetermined magnitude is generated to cause contraction of the fluid cylinder at a predetermined rate. Similarly, when fluid at the same rate and flow is communicated to the other pressure chamber, a force of the same predetermined magnitude is generated to expand the fluid cylinder. A directional control valve is disposed in the closed circuit between the inlet and outlet of the fluid pump so as to selectively direct fluid to either of the pressure chambers to selectively expand or contract the fluid cylinder.

    Abstract: Excessive primary cooldown and start up of the auxiliary feedwater system in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) following a reactor trip are avoided by switching to primary coolant T.sub.avg programmed, main feedwater flow control in place of normal level programmed control. The Low T.sub.avg set point at which the main feedwater isolation valves are closed is lowered below the no load T.sub.avg temperature set point and the flow rate is decreased gradually to zero at a T.sub.avg between these two set points. In addition, the low-low level set point at which the auxiliary feedwater system is started is lowered if possible, and/or the level signal is filtered, or the start signal delayed, to increase the margin to the low-low set point.

    Abstract: An 1=1 helical winding which spirals about a conventional planar, circular central conductor of a helical-axis stellarator adds a significant degree of flexibility by making it possible to control the rotational transform profile and shear of the magnetic fields confining the plasma in a helical-axis stellarator. The toroidal central conductor links a plurality of toroidal field coils which are separately disposed to follow a helical path around the central conductor in phase with the helical path of the 1=1 winding. This coil configuration produces bean-shaped magnetic flux surfaces which rotate around the central circular conductor in the same manner as the toroidal field generating coils. The additional 1=1 winding provides flexible control of the magnetic field generated by the central conductor to prevent the formation of low-order resonances in the rotational transform profile which can produce break-up of the equilibrium magnetic surfaces.
