  • Patent number: 4949540
Abstract: A hydraulic system having multiple actuators is provided with positive pressure flow equalization for both advancing and retracting movements of the system by means of first and second flow divider elements for each actuator. The flow divider elements are cross-coupled between the actuators, a controllable source of pressurized fluid and a reservoir. The flow divider elements are positive-displacement gear or vane pump units that are connected by a common shaft for coordinating fluid flow to the various actuators. Two or more of the actuators can be connected for lifting a load such as an automobile, the system being provided with safety latches at each actuator, the flow dividers not only coordinating the actuator movements during normal raising and lowering operation, but also preventing loss of synchronization of the actuators in case of engagement of a subset only of the latches.

  • Patent number: 4948335
Abstract: An apparatus and method for improving moisture extraction from a steam turbine incorporates a collection slot adjacent a last rotating stage of the turbine with the collection slot being vented outside the turbine by bores through the turbine wall. Moisture removal is enhanced by the use of pumps connected to each of the bores for suctioning water from the collection slot. The pumps may be ejectors powered by subcooled water to minimize flashing potential. The suctioned moisture is returned to the system after passing to a condenser.

  • Patent number: 4948111
Abstract: Backing boards are delivered one at a time from a supply hopper to a stack of printed paper sheets at the stacking station outfeed end of a printing press while the outfeed of the next succeeding printed sheet is delayed for a time sufficient to allow the backing board to be delivered onto the stack. In one embodiment, the delay is achieved by stopping delivery of a blank sheet to the printing station of the press. In another embodiment, the delay is achieved by extending an arm into the path of gravity fall of the printed paper sheet toward the stack. A plurality of groups of printed sheets, each provided with a backing board, thus may be assembled in the stack. If the stack is to be bonded together with adhesive at one edge, a cutting line is installed at each backing board to facilitate cutting the adhesive layer to form a plurality of pads. The board inserting apparatus is supported on a vertically adjustable housing to adapt it to various types and sizes of commercial printing presses.

  • Patent number: 4945723
Abstract: A hydraulic drive system has first and second flow control valves. Each of the control valves has a main valve of the seat valve type with a valve body for controlling communication between an inlet port and an outlet port which are both connected to a main circuit. Each further have a variable restrictor capable of changing an opening degree thereof in response to displacements of the valve body, and a back pressure chamber communcating with the inlet port through the variable restrictor and producing a control pressure to urge the valve body in the valve-closing direction. A pilot valve is connected to a pilot circuit which is connected between the back pressure chamber and the outlet port of the main valve; and an auxiliary valve is connected to the pilot circuit for controlling a differential pressure between the inlet pressure and the outlet pressure of the pilot valve.

  • Patent number: 4946152
Abstract: In a sorter-finisher with a sorting and stapling functions, the sheets ejected from a copying machine are transported and stored one by one into bins which are movable in the vertical direction along a guiding member, after taking out from each of the bins, the sheets are stapled by a stapling device. The guiding member, for preventing sheets on the bins from sliding down, have a first opening through which sheets ejected from the copying machine are fed onto one of the bins located opposite to the first opening and a second opening through which sheets held on one of the bins located opposite to the second opening are taken out. A first gate member provided at the first opening is movable from a closing position where the first gate member closes the first opening to an opening position where the first gate member is out of the first opening.

  • Patent number: 4942738
Abstract: In a booster casing (12) a movable wall (14) separates two compartments (16,18) from each other. In inoperative position, a control valve (20) connects the two compartments (16,18) with each other, and separates them when in an operative position, connecting one (16) of them to a source of pressure which differs from the pressure in the other compartment (18). A cylinder casing (52) is attached to the booster casing (12), projects into the same, and contains at least one pressure piston (54) which defines a pressure chamber (56) for pressurizing a brake circuit. An input piston (40) having a greater effective surface than the pressure piston (54) and defining an input chamber (42) is movable together with the movable wall (14). The input chamber (42) is adapted to be relieved of pressure by a relief valve (80) if the booster (10) fails. The input piston (40) and chamber (42) are arranged inside the booster casing (12), and the input piston (40) forms part of the movable wall (14).

  • Patent number: 4942803
Abstract: A vehicle steering for turning the steerable wheels of a vehicle having a fluid motor with a housing defining a fluid chamber and a piston in the chamber dividing the chamber into first and second chamber portions. A rotatable steering input member is supported by the housing. A rotatable follow-up member is associated with the piston and rotatable upon movement of the piston in the chamber. A valve controls pressurized fluid flow to the first and second chamber portions. The valve comprises first and second relatively movable valve parts. One of the valve parts is connected with the input member and the other of the valve parts is connected with the follow-up member forming a unit therewith. The unit has a surface against which fluid pressure in the first and second chamber portions acts tending to create an axial force on the unit. Pressure is applied to another surface area of the unit to balance the axial force acting on the unit.

  • Patent number: 4941650
Abstract: An apparatus for forming an indicium in a stream of moving signatures, consisting of a signature displaced laterally from the stream and corresponding to a predetermined count of signatures, comprises an idler roller mechanism connected with a rotatable idler roller shaft and a series of vacuum heads located adjacent to and downstream of the idler roller mechanism. The vacuum heads are mounted to a vacuum head shaft laterally movable with respect to the signatures. A detector such as a laser detector coupled with a counter is used to actuate the system. When a predetermined count is reached as determined by the detector and counter, the idler roller shaft is caused to rotate to lower the idler roller and the signature corresponding to the count contacts the tops of each vacuum head. Simultaneously, a partial vacuum is formed in the recessed vacuum chamber of each head binding the targeted signature to the heads.

  • Patent number: 4941323
Abstract: A hydraulic cylinder having an internal groove in which is disposed a seal member peripherally engaging a seal-less reciprocable piston. In one form, the hydraulic cylinder is a master cylinder having a valved port in fluid communication with a source of fluid, opening and closing of the port being effected by a reciprocable plunger mounted on the end of the piston. An outlet port and a conduit places the chamber of the master cylinder in fluid communication with the chamber of the slave cylinder. In a slave cylinder version, a single port places the pressure chamber of the slave cylinder in communication with the master cylinder for introducing fluid and withdrawing fluid into and from the slave cylinder chamber, and thereby reciprocating the slave cylinder piston.
