  • Patent number: 6771468
Abstract: A slider utilizes a triple-etch, high pitch-stiffness side rail ABS design. The slider is characterized by a relatively deep shallow recession at its leading edge, which maximizes the cavity area while at the same time increases the pitch angle to achieve DLC pad clearance as required by smooth media ABS designs. The slider ABS has a shallower recession at the trailing edge, which provides low gram-load sensitivity and low flying standard deviation. The slider ABS further presents a decreased sensitivity in response to altitude variations.

  • Patent number: 6744602
Abstract: Herein is disclosed a method and apparatus for reducing particle collection on a slider or gimbal tongue. The gimbal tongue is shaped so as to interact with airflow within a disc drive to direct particles away from the slider and gimbal tongue. The leading edge of the gimbal tongue overhangs the leading edge of the slider. As air current approaches such a geometry, a large pocket of slow moving, high pressure air is created just upwind of the slider. Thus, as particulate matter encounters this pocket, the matter is slowed and its momentum is partially dissipated. A vent is provided in the gimbal tongue. The vent permits an escape route for the particles to move to an area of lower pressure, located on the other side of the gimbal tongue.

  • Patent number: 6741421
Abstract: A single pole type magnetic head has a writing head including a main pole and an auxiliary pole, and a reading head including a read element, wherein the main pole has a recess on the trailing side of its air bearing surface. When recording is performed on a perpendicular medium by using the single pole type magnetic head, the magnetic field distribution on the trailing side of the main pole air bearing surface is linearized, whereby the magnetic reversal is determined. As a result, a bit is recorded without curving the shape of magnetic reversal. Accordingly, when the bit is read, the magnetic reversal width appears to be large, so that the half-width of a solitary wave is increased, and at the same time, the recording track width is narrowed with an increase in linear recording density.
